Read on to find out what scientists have discovered, including SOD2 genes and SNPs.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Superoxide_Dismutase_2_SOD2\"><a id=\"post-9981-_uoi7qgak27jh\"><\/a><strong>What is Superoxide Dismutase 2 (SOD2)?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"The_SOD_Family\"><a id=\"post-9981-_9mxv01vfhvaf\"><\/a>The SOD Family<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Superoxide dismutases are enzymes that transform the superoxide (O<sub>2<\/sub>-) radical into either ordinary oxygen (O<sub>2<\/sub>) or hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3811078\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Superoxide is produced as a by-product of oxygen metabolism. If left be, it can cause widespread cell damage. Thus, SOD is an important part of antioxidant defense in all cells exposed to oxygen [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3811078\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen peroxide is also damaging, but less so. On the upside, it can also be degraded by other enzymes such as<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/catalase-benefits\/\"> catalase<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3811078\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Scientists think that SOD plays a protective role against<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a>, ionizing radiation, and inflammatory cytokines [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3811078\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5969776\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"SOD_Types\"><a id=\"post-9981-_p0cxs6462kw3\"><\/a>SOD Types<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are three types of SOD: SOD1, SOD2, and SOD3 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5969776\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>SOD1 is located in the cellular fluid, SOD2 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/mitochondria\/\">mitochondria<\/a>, and SOD3 outside the cell [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5969776\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Superoxide &#8211; the harmful molecule SOD neutralizes &#8211; is one of the main<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> reactive oxygen species<\/a> in the cell. That\u2019s why SOD serves as a key antioxidant [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5969776\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>SOD2 (also called <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\">MnSOD<\/a>) is often viewed as the most important form of SOD in humans, especially in the brain. As its name suggests, SOD2 requires manganese (Mn) to work [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5969776\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3811078\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"What_SOD2_Does\"><a id=\"post-9981-_30n8e76ir52g\"><\/a>What SOD2 Does<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>SOD2 transforms superoxide produced by the mitochondria into the less toxic hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. Low activity of this enzyme has been linked with stroke, Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s disease, and several aging-related diseases [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3811078\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Mice lacking Sod2 die shortly after birth, amid massive oxidative stress [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Superoxide_dismutase\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, mice 50% deficient in SOD2 have a normal lifespan and minimal defects but do suffer increased DNA damage and increased the incidence of cancer [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Superoxide_dismutase\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In flies and yeast, higher production of Sod2 has been suggested to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lifestyle-diet-increase-longevity\/\">increase lifespan<\/a>, but this hasn\u2019t been proven in humans. We can\u2019t apply findings from simple organisms like fruit flies to humans, so we have yet to see to what extent this enzyme affects longevity in people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1462415\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, scientists point out that superoxide has a few positive functions in the body: clearing infections, cellular communication, creating new mitochondria, and destroying cancer-like cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3151424\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Also, researchers are investigating whether certain cancer cells overproduce SOD2 to become more invasive &#8211; at least in test tubes. This hasn\u2019t yet been looked at in humans [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12551919\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>On the whole, though, superoxide is seen as more damaging than helpful. Its harmful effects have been linked to one scientific theory that says <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">oxidative stress<\/a> contributes to many chronic diseases.
