Read on to learn more about them.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Leaky_Gut\">What Is Leaky Gut?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The theory is fairly simple. <strong>When there are abnormalities in the intestinal barrier<\/strong>, the intestinal permeability increases. This potentially means that <strong>more of the gut content can pass\/leak through<\/strong>, which is referred to as \u201cleaky gut\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5440529\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some scientists think that when the gut is leaky, <strong>gut bacteria and their products may escape the gut<\/strong>, which could potentially produce inflammation and cause tissue damage. Similarly, <strong>food-derived antigens (proteins or partially digested proteins) could pass through the gut and promote both local or whole-body immune responses<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5440529\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about what makes the gut \u201cleaky\u201d and the conditions associated with it, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/leaky-gut-syndrome-signs-symptoms-treatments\/\">check out this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_to_Prevent_a_Leaky_Gut\"><strong>How to Prevent a Leaky Gut<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As leaky gut may occur as a symptom in a number of underlying diseases, the most important thing is to work with your doctor to address any potential underlying health condition.<\/p>\n<p>For example, several studies have shown that chronic infections can increase gut permeability, and therefore they need to be addressed if possible [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3369828\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1307049\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9114195\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11780808\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26752615\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some clinical studies show that addressing leaky gut may be beneficial in some gut-related conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and celiac disease. However, at this point in time, <strong>there is little to no clinical evidence that addressing leaky gut could improve any particular non-gut related condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Potentially_Beneficial_Lifestyle_and_Dietary_Changes\"><strong>1) Potentially Beneficial Lifestyle and Dietary Changes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Much of the emerging research shows that stress may increase intestinal permeability [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22768175\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25537677\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24153250\">R<\/a>]. Managing stress levels is one way to potentially improve the function of your intestinal barrier and your overall health.<\/p>\n<p>A healthy circadian rhythm may also help keep your gut healthy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3688973\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol increases intestinal permeability and is best avoided if you have gut issues [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2614138\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6141332\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21876358\">R<\/a>]. Even moderate consumption can increase intestinal permeability in people who have gut inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3180655\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>If you have certain food sensitivities (e.g. gluten), you may need to avoid offending foods. However, make sure your diet is overall healthy and well balanced, to avoid nutritional deficiencies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4253991\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Dietary and lifestyle choices can either increase or decrease intestinal permeability. Managing stress may be the most important factor.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Moderate_Exercise\"><strong>2) Moderate Exercise<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 30 people with diabetes who initially had increased intestinal permeability, <strong>6 months of regular exercise improved leaky gut and decreased low-grade inflammation<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30667205-effects-of-chronic-exercise-on-gut-microbiota-and-intestinal-barrier-in-human-with-type-2-diabetes\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Swimming increased tight junction protein levels in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19176351\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice, 30 minutes of swimming per day maintained low intestinal permeability. It also prevented chronic stress-induced gut barrier dysfunction [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24291325\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Vitamins_and_Minerals\"><strong>3) Vitamins and Minerals<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Make sure you are not deficient in vitamins and minerals required for proper gut barrier and immune function. Of the remaining 2 who had increased intestinal permeability, 1 relapsed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11383597\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Low levels of zinc improved intestinal permeability in a study of 58 children with diarrhea [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25520366\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">In cases of deficiency, supplementing with certain nutrients (including zinc and vitamins A, D, and B) may help restore intestinal barrier function.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Probiotics\"><strong>4) Probiotics<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Probiotics may help reduce gut leakiness. Some scientists suggest they can strengthen tight junctions and restore the integrity of the intestinal barrier.<\/p>\n<p>In 2 studies with 10 and 7 people, respectively,<strong> <em>L.<\/em> <em>plantarum<\/em> promoted gut barrier repair and increased the stability of tight junctions<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5206730\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20224007\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fermented milk with probiotics decreased gut permeability in a clinical trial with 30 IBS patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18671775\">R<\/a>]. In animal studies, certain probiotic supplements decreased intestinal permeability.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"5_PrebioticsFiber\"><strong>5) Prebiotics\/Fiber<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Prebiotics are fibers that stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-inulin\/\"><strong>Inulin<\/strong><\/a><strong>-enriched pasta preserved the intestinal barrier and decreased zonulin<\/strong> in 20 healthy volunteers [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23244539\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In 32 people with fatty liver<strong>, a diet high in fiber reduced intestinal permeability and blood zonulin levels and improved liver function<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30453660-gut-permeability-might-be-improved-by-dietary-fiber-in-individuals-with-nonalcoholic-fatty-liver-disease-nafld-undergoing-weight-reduction\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Prebiotic galactooligosaccharides (GOS) improved intestinal barrier function in rats with pancreatitis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19525042\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Prebiotics lowered intestinal permeability and improved tight-junction integrity in obese and diabetic mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2702831\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Prebiotics, fibers that promote healthy gut bacteria, may help improve intestinal barrier function.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Glutamine\"><strong>6) Glutamine<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Studies suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/15-proven-health-benefits-glutamine\/\">glutamine<\/a> may help maintain intestinal barrier function [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27749689\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glutamine had beneficial effects on intestinal integrity in 101 preterm infants<\/strong> and increased intestinal barrier function in a study with 80 malnourished children [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21463215\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15625423\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A study of 51 cancer patients showed that<strong> glutamine countered the chemotherapy-induced increase in intestinal permeability <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16949180\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Glutamine reduced radiation-caused gut injury and maintained lower gut permeability in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2354410\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Other\"><strong>7) Other<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of any of the below-listed foods and supplements for improving gut permeability. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts.
