Normally housed safely in the gut, lipopolysaccharides can enter the blood if you have an infection, \u201cleaky gut\u201d, or eat too many fatty foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn about the potential health risks of lipopolysaccharides and which factors may help reduce them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Health_Risks_of_High_LPS_Levels\">Potential <strong>Health Risks of High LPS Levels<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The conditions we discuss here are commonly associated with high LPS levels, but this single symptom is not enough for a diagnosis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they have been studied in cohort studies, we cannot conclude for certain that high LPS levels <em>caused <\/em>these conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work with your doctor to discover what underlying condition might be causing your high LPS levels and to develop an appropriate plan to improve your health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"1_Fatigue\"><strong>1) Fatigue<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fatigue is reliably caused in humans by the administration of LPS<\/strong>, as part of LPS-induced \u201csickness behavior\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17986486\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LPS increased fatigue and inflammation (TNF-a, IL-6) in a small trial with 11 healthy participants. Pre-treatment with citalopram (SSRI) prevented the increase in fatigue [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20955776\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In studies of 168 patients,<strong> LPS levels were greater in those with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-real-heres-test\/\"><strong>chronic fatigue syndrome<\/strong><\/a><strong> and were associated with symptom severity, including fatigue, concentration problems, and failing memory<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17007934\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25433843\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"2_Poor_Memory\"><strong>2) Poor Memory<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a small trial on 20 healthy men, intravenous<strong> LPS impaired verbal and nonverbal memory and increased <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\"><strong>anxiety<\/strong><\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\"><strong>depression<\/strong><\/a>. Inflammatory cytokine secretion was associated with a decrease in memory performance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11343523\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Administration of LPS increased anxiety, depression, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-cortisol-health-effects\/\">cortisol<\/a>, and blood<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/norepinephrine-stress-hormone\/\"> norepinephrine<\/a> in another trial on 34 men. Low-dose LPS impaired long-term memory, while high-dose LPS increased reaction time. The authors stated that inflammation may increase short-term alertness, although this is speculative on their part [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22164271\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"3_Anxiety_and_Low_Empathy\"><strong>3) Anxiety and Low Empathy<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a clinical trial on 115 healthy people, <strong>LPS decreased participants\u2019 ability to accurately understand the emotional state of a person by looking at their eyes<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25770082\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a small trial on 18 men, LPS administration worsened mood and increased anxiety. LPS also increased the activation of the right inferior orbitofrontal cortex in response to emotional visual stimuli. This brain region is associated with fear and anger recognition, so increased activity may have increased negative emotions towards the stimuli [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22461242\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Scientists can experimentally induce fatigue, impaired memory, and anxiety with LPS, but more research is needed.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"4_Depression_and_Social_Disconnection\"><strong>4) Depression and Social Disconnection<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LPS administration consistently increased depression<\/strong> in numerous studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19666048\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Injection of <strong>LPS increased feelings of social disconnection, depression<\/strong>, and inflammation (IL-6, TNF-a) in a trial of 39 participants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20043983\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-alpha<\/a> production is increased in the hippocampus of animals after LPS injection. This activation of immune cells in the brain is believed to contribute significantly to the selective brain cell injury associated with depression [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3698075\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study of 9 participants, glucose metabolism (energy use) was increased in the insula and decreased in the cingulate cortex due to LPS-induced inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3717572\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The insula is associated with negative emotions, while the cingulate is associated with positive mood. Thus, increased energy use by the insula and reduced energy use by the cingulate may both promote negative feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LPS increased fatigue and decreased vigor and social interest in a trial on 10 healthy people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23064079\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"5_Inability_to_Experience_Pleasure\"><strong>5) Inability to Experience Pleasure<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Injection of LPS increased depressed mood and lowered the brain response to monetary reward cues (decreased ventral striatum activity) in a clinical trial on 39 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20719303\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In animals, <strong>LPS consistently lowered preference for palatable foods, stimulation-seeking behavior, and exploration of new environments<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19666048\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">In small human experiments, LPS seems to impair mood, social behavior, and the ability to feel pleasure; large-scale data are lacking.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"6_Disturbed_Sleep\"><strong>6) Disturbed Sleep<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LPS disrupted <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\"><strong>sleep<\/strong><\/a><strong> and lowered REM sleep in healthy humans<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10749783\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8036367\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LPS also lowered non-REM sleep and increased sleepiness during the day in a study of 10 men [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9802118\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"sh-partner shp-form sponsored sh-et-7388fa\">\n  <div>\n          <div class=\"partner-heading\">8 Ways To Use Your DNA &amp; Optimize Your Health<\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"partner-content\">\n      <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What kinds of secrets could your genes hold? Ovarian inflammation and progesterone deficiency indicate impaired reproductive health and are associated with infertility [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25539190\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26395640\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"9_Reduced_Appetite\"><strong>9) Reduced Appetite<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In humans, <strong>low-dose LPS reduced food intake<\/strong> in the first 4 hours. Reductions in food intake were associated with blood levels of TNF and IL-6 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11343523\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12383455\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">LPS is hypothesized to disturb sleep, reproductive health, and appetite, but only preliminary findings are available.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"10_Low_Pain_Tolerance\"><strong>10) Low Pain Tolerance<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study of 11 healthy men, LPS administration increased sensitivity to rectal pain and lowered <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a> tolerance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22264996\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LPS also decreased tolerance to pressure, mechanical pain, and<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/12-reasons-embrace-cold\/\"><strong>cold<\/strong><\/a>, in a clinical trial of 59 healthy men [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24814500\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"11_Diabetes\"><strong>11) Diabetes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elevated LPS is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21270197\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals with type 1 diabetes have 235.7% higher LPS levels than those without diabetes. Similarly, people with type 2 diabetes have 66.4% higher LPS levels than non-diabetic controls [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28183445\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impaired lipoprotein metabolism in type 2 diabetes patients reduces LPS breakdown and may increase LPS-related inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24694333\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study of 477 people with type 1 diabetes, high LPS activity was associated with the development of diabetic kidney disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2732155\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"12_Obesity\"><strong>12) Obesity<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LPS activity and LPS binding protein were associated with obesity<\/strong> in a study on over 3,500 adults [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25326898\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20530747\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LPS given to mice for 4 weeks caused a weight gain comparable to that induced by a <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-carb-diet-vs-high-carb-diet\/\">high-fat diet<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17456850\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"13_Metabolic_Syndrome\"><strong>13) Metabolic Syndrome<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Metabolic syndrome is a group of factors that increase the risk of heart disease. These include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides<\/a>, abdominal obesity, and low <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a> cholesterol [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2675814\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study of 192 ethnically-diverse adults, <strong>LPS levels were associated with increased waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><strong>insulin<\/strong><\/a><strong> levels, and reduced HDL-cholesterol<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18672240\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LPS activity and LPS-binding protein were associated with metabolic syndrome in a study on over 3,500 adults [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25326898\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20530747\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">LPS has been linked with obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, but whether it causes any of these conditions is unknown.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"14_Heart_Disease\"><strong>14) Heart Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LPS levels are consistently increased in patients with heart disease and hardening of the arteries <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4432792\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among patients with high <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting\/\">fasting<\/a> blood sugar levels, LPS was associated with platelet activation in a study of 70 patients. Increased platelet activation contributes to blood clotting, which may increase heart disease risk [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28743559\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"15_Non-Alcoholic_Fatty_Liver_Disease\"><strong>15) Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People with <strong>non-alcoholic fatty liver disease had elevated LPS levels<\/strong> in a study of over 900 adults. Interestingly, modest alcohol consumption was associated with lower levels of LPS [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26202818\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"16_Inflammatory_Bowel_Disease\"><strong>16) Inflammatory Bowel Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>High levels of LPS are consistently seen in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\">IBD<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17206721\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4432792\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elevated LPS was found in 94% of Crohn&#8217;s disease patients and 88% of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\"><strong>ulcerative colitis<\/strong><\/a><strong> patients<\/strong> in a study of 64 patients. Additionally, IBD severity was associated with LPS levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1382629\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"17_Cancer\"><strong>17) Cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher <strong>LPS levels were associated with an increased incidence of colorectal tumors<\/strong> in a study of 462 adults [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23442743\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LPS also increased the ability of colorectal cancer cells to spread [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21363926\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"18_Alzheimers_Disease\"><strong>18) Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>High levels of LPS and inflammatory cytokines were associated with Alzheimer\u2019s disease <\/strong>in a study of 69 patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2995297\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, antibodies to periodontal gram-negative bacteria were associated with Alzheimer\u2019s disease in a study of 158 participants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22546352\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"19_Parkinsons_Disease\"><strong>19) Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In a study of 19 individuals, patients with Parkinson\u2019s disease showed elevated intestinal permeability and LPS levels<\/strong> in their gut compared to healthy participants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22145021\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"20_Autism\"><strong>20) Autism<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In one study, LPS levels were higher in autistic compared to healthy individuals. <strong>LPS was also associated with worse social interaction<\/strong> among those with autism [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20097267\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"21_HIV\"><strong>21) HIV<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transport of LPS from the gut to the blood <\/strong>is associated with<strong> a more rapid progression of <\/strong>HIV infection [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17115046\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"22_Retinal_Disease\"><strong>22) Retinal Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pigment cells of the retina died due to exposure to LPS-induced inflammatory cytokines <\/strong>(IL-6 and IL-8) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19157552\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"Can_Low-Dose_LPS_Ever_Be_Good\"><strong>Can Low-Dose LPS Ever Be Good?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is some evidence from animal studies that <strong>oral administration <\/strong>of LPS may help in disease prevention by keeping immune cells called macrophages in alert mode. In this scenario, <strong>low-dose LPS \u201cprimes\u201d macrophages to remove nearby waste products, without being strong enough to cause inflammatory cytokine release<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25075092\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26681459\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More human research is needed to determine if this is an effective method of disease prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span id=\"How_to_Reduce_Lipopolysaccharides_LPS_and_Inflammation\"><strong>How to Reduce <\/strong>Lipopolysaccharides (<strong>LPS) and Inflammation<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following lifestyle changes may help you reduce the inflammatory response triggered by LPS. Discuss with your doctor if any of these strategies may help in your case. <strong>Never implement them in place of what your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"1_Prebiotics\"><strong>1) Prebiotics<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In three clinical trials of 119 obese and diabetic patients, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-inulin\/\">inulin<\/a><strong>\/oligofructose consumed daily for 8 to 12 weeks lowered LPS levels and inflammation, and increased bifidobacteria Probiotics<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a trial on 30 patients with cirrhosis (liver damage), <strong><em>Lactobacillus GG<\/em><\/strong><strong> taken for 8 weeks lowered LPS and TNF-alpha levels<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24628464\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another trial of 30 triathletes, daily supplementation of 30 billion CFU <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> and <em>Bifidobacterium<\/em> strains for 12 weeks reduced LPS pre-race and six days post-race [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27869661\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a trial on 44 HIV patients, 12-week treatment with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/s-boulardii\/\"><em>Saccharomyces <\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/s-boulardii\/\"><em>boulardii<\/em><\/a> reduced LPS and systemic infantis<\/em><\/a><em> 35624<\/em> reduced TNF-alpha and IL-6 production caused by LPS in a trial of 22 healthy participants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23842110\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Both pre- and probiotic supplementation has been linked with lower LPS levels, but larger trials are needed.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"3_Polyphenols\"><strong>3) Polyphenols<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Grape extract rich in polyphenols lowered blood LPS in a study of 29 adults [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1756464616302213\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study of 10 healthy people, consumption of a <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-15-scientific-health-benefits-of-resveratrol-with-references\/\"><strong>resveratrol<\/strong><\/a><strong> and grape <\/strong>polyphenol<strong> drink increased the number of fecal <em>Bifidobacterium<\/em> and <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> (gut barrier protectors) and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-butyrate-derivatives-sodium-butyrate-phenylbutyrate-trybutyrine-butyric-acid-butyrate-prodrugs-butyrate-producing-bacteria\/\">butyrate<\/a>-producing bacteria in a trial of 20 individuals [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26599039\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that the potential health effects of red wine may be outweighed by the multiple risks of alcohol, especially if consumed in high amounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"5_Omega-3_Fatty_Acids\"><strong>5) Omega-3 Fatty Acids<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>High-dose <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-22-science-based-health-benefits-of-fish-oil\/\">omega-3<\/a> supplementation (3.6 g\/day) reduced fever and moderately lowered inflammatory cytokines due to LPS administration in a trial of 60 healthy people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24190860\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Omega-3 supplementation (2.5 g\/day) lowered mice, omega 3 supplementation and omega-6 reduction increased the production of alkaline phosphatase, caused favorable changes in gut bacteria composition, and lowered LPS production, gut permeability, and inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26062993\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"6_Olive_Oil\"><strong>6) Olive Oil<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A Consuming peanuts high in oleic acid had the strongest effect [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25421236\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"9_Bilberries\"><strong>9) Bilberries<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumption of 400 g\/day of bilberries for 8 weeks reduced LPS, CRP, IL-6, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/IL12a\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-12<\/a> in a small trial of 27 participants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22961907\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"10_Exercise\"><strong>10) Exercise<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sedentary people have higher blood LPS levels than highly-trained people [<a href=\"http:\/\/europepmc.org\/abstract\/med\/20684772\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participation in a <strong>12-week interval <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-14-proven-health-benefits-exercise-references-mechanisms\/\"><strong>exercise<\/strong><\/a><strong> program lowered LPS levels <\/strong>in a study of 20 obese women [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28049238\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A single session of high-intensity interval training lowered LPS-stimulated TNF-alpha release immediately following and one hour after exercise in a study of 19 participants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28122717\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, exercise has also been shown to increase intestinal permeability and LPS levels in the short-term [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26029209\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"11_Vagus_Nerve_Stimulation\"><strong>11) Vagus Nerve Stimulation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a small trial of 20 people, the use of a noninvasive <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/28-ways-to-stimulate-your-vagus-nerve-and-all-you-need-to-know-about-it\/\">vagus<\/a> nerve stimulator (gammaCore) 3 times in one day increased anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) levels in response to LPS [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26990318\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vagus nerve stimulation by <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/acetylcholine\/\">acetylcholine<\/a> lowered the release of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-a, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1B<\/a>, IL-6, IL-8) in macrophage cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10839541\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"12_Meditation_Breathing_and_Cold_Exposure\"><strong>12) Meditation, Breathing, and Cold Exposure<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a trial of 24 healthy participants, activation of the sympathetic nervous system by one week of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/meditation\/\">meditation<\/a>, breathing exercises, and immersion in ice-cold water reduced inflammation caused by LPS [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24799686\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"13_Lactoferrin\"><strong>13) Lactoferrin<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lactoferrin is a protein found in milk, tears, and saliva that is part of the immune system and protects against bacteria and fungi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lactoferrin binds to LPS on bacteria and makes them more susceptible to destruction by the immune system or antibiotics. Additionally, lactoferrin binds to free-floating LPS and prevents it from causing inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22101278\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a cell study, lactoferrin prevented the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-8 caused by <em>Escherichia coli <\/em>LPS [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC127826\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span id=\"14_Activated_Charcoal\"><strong>14) Activated Charcoal<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In one study, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/activated-charcoal\/\">activated charcoal<\/a> completely removed LPS from human plasma (the liquid component that&#8217;s left after red and white blood cells and platelets are removed from blood). This result suggests that activated charcoal can bind to and remove LPS [<a href=\"http:\/\/europepmc.org\/abstract\/med\/2403508\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use caution, however: charcoal does not cross the intestinal barrier, so it can only remove LPS from the intestine. Any toxins that have crossed into the bloodstream are beyond the reach of activated charcoal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, charcoal is a powerful adsorbent that also binds to (and prevents absorption of) important vitamins and other nutrients. If you use activated charcoal often, you may risk nutrient deficiency. The only medically acceptable use of nicotine patches is for smoking cessation, though [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1810444\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>However, keep in mind that nicotine causes addiction, withdrawal syndrome, and adverse effects such as headaches, nausea, accelerated heartbeat, muscle pain or stiffness, and problems sleeping<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, the multiple health risks of smoking cigarettes outweigh the potential benefit of nicotine to reduce LPS-induced inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Antibiotics<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study of 20 cirrhosis patients with impaired cognitive and motor function due to liver failure (minimal hepatic encephalopathy), rifaximin (an antibiotic) lowered LPS levels and improved cognitive function [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23565181\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colistin (an antibiotic) reduced LPS-induced inflammation (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-a) in a study of 15 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27864832\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, never take antibiotics unless prescribed by a doctor. Taking antibiotics when you don\u2019t need them can make bacteria develop resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Misoprostol<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Misoprostol is a drug used to treat stomach ulcers by binding to the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/prostaglandins\/\">prostaglandin<\/a> (PGE1) receptor. This type of prostaglandin reduces inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Misoprostol reduced LPS-induced TNF-a production and increased IL-10 production in a study of 9 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26408955\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Misoprostol may help reduce LPS-induce inflammation if you are already on this medication, but <strong>never start taking it or increase your dose for this reason<\/strong>.
