Read about the latest research and its variety of potential benefits here.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Melatonin\"><strong>What is Melatonin?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Melatonin is derived from the amino acid tryptophan and the neurotransmitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-serotonin\">serotonin<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3001212\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin has many important functions in the body, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Influences the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-keep-to-a-circadian-rhythm\/\">circadian<\/a> rhythm<\/li>\n<li>Aids the immune system<\/li>\n<li>Helps eye function<\/li>\n<li>Reduces <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">oxidative stress<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Promotes <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\">sleep<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Controls many cellular events, including synthesis of important molecules<\/li>\n<li>Protects against radiation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The pineal gland, which is nestled in the brain, makes melatonin. The quantity of melatonin in the blood depends on the time of the day. At night there is 10 to 15 times more melatonin in the blood there is in the day, which helps people sleep [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15582288\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin is also made by many other organs in the body, especially in the stomach [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4510419\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>If sleep is interrupted by <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-effects-bluelight-at-night\/\">blue light exposure at night<\/a>, melatonin levels decrease drastically. In addition, melatonin levels also decrease with age [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2993480\/\">R<\/a>]. However, darkness does not stimulate melatonin production. It simply permits melatonin production [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15649734\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Benefits_of_Melatonin\">Potential Benefits of Melatonin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Melatonin supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use. Supplements generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_For\">Possibly Effective For<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Endometriosis\"><strong>1) Endometriosis<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Surprisingly, melatonin has shown promise for reducing pain in endometriosis. In a study of 40 women of reproductive age, 10 mg of melatonin per day reduced pain scores and dysmenorrhea by almost 40% each. Women who took melatonin also used fewer painkillers [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23602498\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Blood_Pressure\"><strong>2) Blood Pressure<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Melatonin plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure. Activation of its receptors, MT1 and MT2, widens blood vessels, which decreases blood pressure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4227197\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Like sleep, blood pressure has circadian rhythmicity. It increases in the morning and decreases at night. Melatonin rises at night and decreases in the morning. This indicates that there may be a connection between melatonin and blood pressure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4227197\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Certain types of hypertension (high blood pressure) are characterized by low melatonin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4227197\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In patients with type 2 diabetes, 5 mg of melatonin decreased blood pressure levels. However, there is not enough information about how melatonin reduces blood pressure to determine whether it is effective at lowering blood pressure. It may be used as a supporting therapy in hypertensive patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4175768\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">One of melatonin\u2019s functions is in the regulation of blood pressure throughout the circadian rhythm. Some people with high blood pressure may benefit from melatonin supplementation; research is ongoing.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Sunburn\"><strong>3) Sunburn<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Topical gels or creams containing melatonin may prevent sunburn in people with highly sensitive skin. In multiple studies (a total of 83 volunteers), melatonin gels or creams significantly reduced skin reddening after UV exposure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8874746\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9407172\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10085475\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27543364\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The best formulation and concentration of melatonin gel or cream is unknown.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Thrombocytopenia\">4) Thrombocytopenia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Thrombocytopenia, a blood disorder characterized by low platelet count, can result from cancer, cancer treatments, and other underlying conditions. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking melatonin supplements, and never use them in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Tinnitus\"><strong>5) Tinnitus<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Tinnitus is the unexplained noise in the ears that affects many people: the elderly, those with a hearing disability, or those affected as a result of certain drugs [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23661829\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21673362\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin was 150 times more effective compared with other drugs that treat tinnitus at decreasing tinnitus symptoms [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21673362\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In elderly patients with tinnitus, melatonin levels are very low. This may indicate that its levels are connected with normal ear activity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23661829\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Gut_Health\"><strong>6) Gut Health<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Melatonin concentration in stomach tissues is 10 to 100 times higher than in the blood. Its concentrations are 400 times higher in the gut than in the brain [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12395907\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Stomach melatonin is controlled differently from brain melatonin. Its concentration is the highest at midday, not at night [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17928638\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In the stomach, it reacts mostly to incoming food [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4510419\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Stomach melatonin also controls the behavior of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfhacked.com\/blog\/gut-bacteria-microbiome\/\">gut bacteria<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26751389\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melatonin and its precursor L-tryptophan can help heal stomach ulcers in humans<\/strong>. They protected against lesions caused by aspirin and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/h-pylori-part-1\/\"><em>H. pylori<\/em><\/a> infections. Administration of melatonin also accelerates healing of the ulcers [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpp.krakow.pl\/journal\/archive\/10_11\/pdf\/521_10_11_article.pdf\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin strengthens the intestinal barrier by reducing oxidative stress by up to 88% [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12121479\">R<\/a>]. It dose-dependently prevented stress-induced stomach damage and increased the efficiency of drugs that treat stomach ulcer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfhacked.com\/blog\/ranitidine\/\">ranitidine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfhacked.com\/blog\/omeprazole\/\">omeprazole<\/a>. Melatonin reduced free radicals by 88% in rats.<\/p>\n<p>Its antioxidant properties can <strong>help stop inflammation in the stomach<\/strong>. These effects can help protect against disorders like <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\">colitis<\/a>, irritable bowel syndrome, and even various cancers [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpp.krakow.pl\/journal\/archive\/10_11\/pdf\/521_10_11_article.pdf\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin also helps prevent the death of stomach lining cells due to poisoning [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19220725\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one study, starved rats experienced stomach stress. Melatonin treatment for one week improved stomach lining condition [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26528359\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Also, it significantly reduced stomach pain in <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-ibs-general-gut-dysfunction\/\">IBS<\/a> patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15914575\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Melatonin is secreted by stomach tissues and appears to play a role in digestion and gut inflammation. Research is ongoing into whether supplementation might be beneficial in gut disorders like IBS.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Acid_Reflux_GERD\"><strong>7) Acid Reflux (GERD)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is also known as acid reflux. It is a condition that develops when stomach acid and its contents come back up the esophagus (food pipe). Some symptoms include heartburn, nausea, chest pain, and regurgitation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2821302\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 36 GERD patients, <strong>melatonin supplementation was able to decrease GERD symptoms<\/strong>. Melatonin reduced esophageal pressure and prevented injury when used alone or in conjunction with omeprazole [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2821302\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, omeprazole, a drug that treats GERD, showed better results when administered alone than in combination with melatonin. So although melatonin may be able to treat GERD symptoms, it is not the best option to treat acid reflux [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2821302\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Clinical research is ongoing into whether melatonin could help control acid reflux; conventional alternatives like omeprazole have shown much better results.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Aging\"><strong>8) Aging<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In humans, melatonin levels decline with age [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1395802\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Oxidative stress and damage contribute to the aging process. Melatonin\u2019s antioxidant effects can help stop oxidative damage [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3583885\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin <strong>protects against <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/avoiding-sun-will-kill-14-proven-science-based-health-benefits-sun\/\"><strong>UV<\/strong><\/a><strong>-induced skin aging<\/strong> in humans. Topical application helps the skin through melatonin\u2019s antioxidant activity. The oral administration does not benefit the skin as much [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3583885\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In old rats, dietary melatonin <strong>helped stop age-related bone loss<\/strong>. Supplementation increased bone volume and stiffness, which improved bone health [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24617902\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin increased the lifespan of various animals, including water fleas, fruit flies, and male rodents [<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1385\/ENDO:27:2:201\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, even though melatonin is an anti-aging hormone, it does not delay aging [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1395802\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Melatonin levels decline with age, and some research has suggested that supplementing with melatonin may benefit older people more than younger people, but it does not delay aging.<\/div><\/div>\n<h4>Macular Degeneration<\/h4>\n<p>A part of the eye called the macula tends to degenerate with age. In a study of 100 patients with macular degeneration, 3 mg of melatonin per day for 6 months maintained vision and tissue status roughly the same as at the beginning of the study. While there was no measurable improvement in this study, the time frame was long enough that the researchers expected further degeneration [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16399908\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the study did not include a placebo group, and additional research is required to determine whether melatonin has any real benefit.<\/p>\n<h4>Hair Loss<\/h4>\n<p>Androgenic alopecia is a genetic hair loss condition. Topical application of melatonin <strong>helped prevent hair loss in men and women with alopecia<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3681103\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin application improved hair condition and texture. In multiple studies, melatonin solution helped partially reduce hair loss. It also led to new hair growth in some cases. Although its mechanisms are unknown, melatonin could potentially delay hair loss [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3681103\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Fertility\"><strong>9) Fertility<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In one study, oral administration of melatonin in humans reduced oxidative damage to oocytes and<strong> increased fertilization rates<\/strong>. However, since the study was very small and did not have a control group, this is not sufficient evidence for melatonin\u2019s benefits [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4209073\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin may improve overall movement of sperm cells upon direct exposure. It may also inhibit cell death in the sperm and <strong>improve overall sperm quality<\/strong>, therefore increasing the probability of successful fertilization [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4209073\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Aging can lead to a decline in fertility. Melatonin treatment in female mice delayed age-associated infertility [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5059725\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin administration (10 mg\/kg over 6 and 12 months) in mice also increased the quantity and quality of oocytes (egg cells). This may be due to the suppression of oxidative stress by melatonin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5059725\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, higher doses of melatonin can harm the oocyte and embryo cell cultures [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4209073\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage can negatively impact the success of infertility treatments. Melatonin\u2019s antioxidant activity may help with <em>in vitro<\/em> fertilization results [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4209073\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin administration can maintain female reproductive capacity in aging mice. However, there are not enough studies on humans to support these results. More trials are needed to confirm melatonin\u2019s benefits on the postponement of childbearing [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5059725\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Melatonin may play a role in the normal maintenance and cycling of the reproductive system, but not enough clinical research has been conducted to know whether melatonin supplements could help with human fertility.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lacking_Evidence\">Animal Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of melatonin for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4>10) Neuroplasticity<\/h4>\n<p>In experimental animals, melatonin activated the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\">BDNF<\/a>), a protein responsible for nerve cells&#8217; well-being and regeneration [<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1749-6632.2009.05352.x\/full\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>11) Blood-Brain Barrier<\/h4>\n<p>Melatonin is being investigated for its potential to strengthen the barrier between the brain and the blood [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0188440913000799\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A leaky blood-brain barrier can cause <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-cause-of-brain-fog\/\">cognitive dysfunction<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-cause-of-brain-fog\/\">brain fog<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alzheimer\/\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>, and may also contribute to psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. These proteins initiate inflammation and nerve cell death after the artery leading to the brain gets blocked [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26594596\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>13) Traumatic Brain Injury<\/h4>\n<p>Melatonin is being researched in the context of brain trauma [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/tswj\/2014\/586270\/%23B56\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Treatment of rats with melatonin after brain injury helps reduce the subsequent swelling of various brain regions [<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1749-6632.2009.05352.x\/full\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>14) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)<\/h4>\n<p>In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the nerve cells responsible for movement die. Mice that lacked one of the melatonin receptors \u2013 MT1 \u2013 had a decrease in specific nerve cells crucial for vision [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19706469\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melanin also protected human cells that make eye pigment from cell death [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9804146\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h5>Glaucoma<\/h5>\n<p>Additionally, it <strong>decreases elevated pressure in the eye<\/strong> in humans. Moreover, removal of MT1 in mice results in an increase in the pressure inside the eye and death of nerve cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21362461\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The disturbances in melatonin function may be one of the causes of glaucoma [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23733129\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin and 5-MCA-NAT (a molecule similar to melatonin) are promising agents for treating glaucoma, which is an eye condition caused by elevated pressure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23591996\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h5>Nerve Cells in the Eyes<\/h5>\n<p>Melatonin also prevents the death of nerve cells in an experimental model of optic neuritis in rats. Optic neuritis is a disease that causes the death of optic nerve cells responsible for vision [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26882296\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Also, it is beneficial in refractory central serous chorioretinopathy, a condition that affects the eyes of diabetic patients [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26160525\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Animal and cell studies have established a potential role for melatonin in vision and eye health, but the clinical application of such research is unknown.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"16_Diabetes\"><strong>16) Diabetes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In patients with type 2 diabetes, the concentrations of melatonin both during the day and night are lower compared to healthy subjects. It also restores their function [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25695910\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Drugs that correct melatonin levels (namely Epifamin and Melaxen) can improve diabetes in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24952485\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/7-health-benefits-agomelatine\/\">Agomelatine<\/a>, an antidepressant that targets the melatonin receptors, improves chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a> associated with diabetes. It could help reduce graft failure during heart, bone, liver, and other organ transplants. However, not enough human studies have been done to support these claims [<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1530\/JOE-16-0117\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer_Research\"><strong>Cancer Research<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Melatonin supplementation improved some markers of health in prostate and colorectal cancer patients. It reduced the spread of tumors and increased cancer cell death [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1395802\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are currently looking into the potential role of melatonin in the prevention and treatment of various cancers. Breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer patients have been observed to have reduced melatonin levels compared to healthy patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1395802\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In cell studies, melatonin has mainly been investigated for its activity against breast cancer: in artificial spheres made from breast cells and cancer cells, adding melatonin blocked cancer-like growth. Tumors support <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/treg\/\">T regulatory<\/a> cells as they protect the cancer cells from being killed by the immune system. Melatonin blocks T cells, which can lead to cancer cell death [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21416626\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In cell cultures, melatonin interferes with cancer cells\u2019 energy processes. However, research is ongoing.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Melatonin_in_Mental_Illness_Ongoing_Research\"><strong>Melatonin in Mental Illness: Ongoing Research<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Depression and other <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-the-ice-bucket-challenge-is-so-popular-it-functions-like-heroin\/\">mood<\/a> disorders are often coupled with sleep disturbances, requiring agents that have both a sedating and calming effect. Drugs that activate and bind MT2 receptors are potential therapeutic agents for such conditions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16527442\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Abnormal day-and-night concentrations of melatonin are markers of severe depression [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27367919\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rats, melatonin <strong>alleviates depression induced by chronic stress<\/strong> and significantly changes the brain dynamics of these animals [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27499503\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin synthesis is also disrupted in patients with bipolar disorder. Melatonin and drug that target melatonin receptors, like ramelteon and tasimelteon, can be a beneficial therapy for bipolar disorder as well [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26088111\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>As bipolar disorder is also associated with sleep and mood deregulation, melatonin improves the condition in patients with this problem [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26088111\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, no studies have yet discovered an effective use for melatonin against any particular mental illness. In clinical trials, melatonin supplements have not improved symptoms of bipolar disorder or depression, though sleep quality was somewhat improved [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9378688\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9699707\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The most promising results have come in studies on seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also called seasonal depression. In two studies, melatonin supplements improved both sleep quality and measures of vitality in patients with SAD. A third study found no such benefit, but it was conducted on a short timeline of only six days [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12729938\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10710176\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15714224\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additional human studies will be required to determine the role of melatonin in mental health.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">The role of melatonin in mental health is currently under investigation; researchers have found the most promise for resolving sleep disturbances associated with mental illness.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Melatonin_in_Alzheimers_Dementia\">Melatonin in Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Melatonin <strong>helps alleviate symptoms similar to Alzheimer\u2032s and Parkinson\u2032s disease<\/strong> in mice and rats [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11812267\">R<\/a>]. The use of synthetic melatonin analogs or melatonin-related molecules to block nitric oxide synthase are being evaluated for the treatment of neural diseases ranging from stroke to Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s disease [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11812267\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Positive Results<\/h4>\n<p>The treatment of elderly patients with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD) with bright light in the morning and melatonin at night<strong> improved their sleep and overall rest<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18070004\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A similar study carried out for several years in the Netherlands showed that combined treatment of an AD patient with bright light and melatonin was <strong>beneficial both for rest and mental problems<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18544724\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In humans, both <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/mtnr1a\">MT1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/mtnr1b\">MT2<\/a> levels are low in elderly patients with Alzheimer\u2019s [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17213040\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mouse nerve cells, melatonin prevents cell death caused by amyloid beta 25-35, a substance that causes a condition similar to Alzheimer\u2019s disease [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15854745\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The decrease in melatonin activity and synthesis may explain in part the disruption of sleep and problems with processing information observed in Alzheimer&#8217;s patients [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3001215\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Melatonin\u2019s antioxidant effects were more efficient than <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-vitamin-c-32-science-based-health-benefits\/\">Vitamin C<\/a> in treating the animal model of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
