Products should contain at least 0.05% ferulic acid and 0.1-0.6% ligustilide [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24365638\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27211015\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Product Quality<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Since the species is endangered due to its excessive wild harvesting, give preference to dong quai that has been prepared from cultivated plants<\/strong>. As mentioned, the preovulatory spike in estrogen is needed to block FSH release &#8212; and this feedback loop no longer happens after menopause. As the female body undergoes hormonal changes, the uterus and vagina will start thinning. Symptoms such as hot flashes and mood imbalances are also common [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25841598\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, different sex hormone changes are behind both irregular menstrual cycles and menopausal symptoms.<strong> All involved hormones are important &#8212; including progesterone, LH, and FSH &#8212; but estradiol plays a key role as the main female sex hormone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Dong_Quai_and_Estrogen\">Dong Quai and Estrogen<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Herbs like dong quai may be able to mimic the effects of estrogen, potentially making up for its lack or imbalance. They may also increase sensitivity to estrogen, which can help compensate for its low levels. But despite its widespread use, its estrogen-like benefits are far from evident.<\/p>\n<p>In one study, <strong>an herbal mix with dong quai (QiBaoMeiRan) increased the production of estrogen receptors in rats, which may enhance the response to estradiol<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4142797\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dong quai combined with <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/astragalus\/\"><strong>astragalus<\/strong><\/a><strong> (Danggui Buxue Tang) <\/strong>activated estrogen receptors in cells, suggesting it may increase the response to estradiol. However, the benefit was mostly due to a specific flavonoid from astragalus (calycosin) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17187784\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27196297\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In turn, dong quai alone had a weaker activity and even blocked estrogen effects in one study. This may be due to the different composition of the extracts, since those with the highest ferulic acid or lowest ligustilide content were more active [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16278617\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11368622\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11875334\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21520895\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15814262\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3380541\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One more study leaves us with encouraging results. In menopausal rats, <strong>different dong quai herbal mixes prevented osteoporosis, reduced the thinning of the uterus, vagina and breast glands, and restored hormone balances by increasing <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\"><strong>estradiol<\/strong><\/a><strong> and reducing <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/follicle-stimulating-hormone\/\"><strong>FSH<\/strong><\/a><strong> and LH levels<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16691630\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23036809\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3876910\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4156991\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18520045\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Dong quai contains compounds that may mimic the effects of estrogen in the human body.
