Please discuss your medications with your doctor.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Ranitidine_Zantac\">What Is Ranitidine (Zantac)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ranitidine is a drug that <strong>decreases stomach acid production<\/strong> and is therefore employed in the treatment and prevention of disorders related to excessive stomach acid [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2667937\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Developed in 1977, ranitidine was first introduced into the market in 1981 and quickly became the <strong>best-selling drug worldwide<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10169076\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The main brand names for ranitidine are Zantac\u00ae and Taladine\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p>Ranitidine is a <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/histamine\/\"><strong>histamine<\/strong><\/a><strong> blocker<\/strong>. By binding to the H2-receptors on the stomach acid-producing cells, it prevents their activation by histamine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8930573\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Prescription ranitidine comes as tablets (oral and effervescent), capsules, and syrup. This medication is mainly used to treat [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2667937\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ulcers of the stomach and bowel<\/li>\n<li>Esophagus inflammation<\/li>\n<li>Gastroesophageal reflux disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/disease\/gastroesophageal-reflux\/?utm_source=seo&amp;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;utm_campaign=id00002\">GERD<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Zollinger-Ellison syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is also sold over-the-counter (OTC) as 75 mg and 150 mg tablets to <strong>prevent symptoms of excessive acid<\/strong> in the stomach such as [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11966498\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16128512\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Acid indigestion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Ranitidine decreases stomach acid production by blocking the H2 histamine receptor in the stomach. Developed in 1977, ranitidine is prescribed to treat stomach ulcers, esophageal inflammation, GERD, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects\">Side Effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ranitidine is frequently used worldwide and generally well tolerated.<\/p>\n<p>A review of 21 trials concluded that ranitidine doses of 150 to 600 mg\/day are <strong>equally safe in elderly and non-elderly patients<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8429119\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-94141 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/01\/word-image-480x218.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/01\/word-image-480x218.png 480w, https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/01\/word-image.png 783w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Frequency of the main adverse effects of ranitidine in elderly and non-elderly patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8429119\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Adverse effects can, however, occur in up to 5% of patients. Those most frequently reported are [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2667937\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Stomach_and_Bowel\">1) Stomach and Bowel<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The most frequent events in this system are [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9042985\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nausea and\/or vomiting (2.6-6.8%)<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea (1.4-4.1%)<\/li>\n<li>Stomach pain (1.3-1.8%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These effects <strong>tend to improve with continuous treatment<\/strong>. Other, less frequent (up to 2%) side effects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Constipation<\/li>\n<li>Heartburn<\/li>\n<li>Dry mouth<\/li>\n<li>Gas<\/li>\n<li>Pancreas inflammation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stomach and bowel cancer occurred at a rate of 0.2 per million patients treated, <strong>but cannot be associated with ranitidine intake<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?hl=es&amp;as_sdt=0%2C5&amp;q=medical+events+occurring+in+patients+with+duodenal+ulcer+disease+during+maintenance+treatment+with+ranitidine&amp;btnG=\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Occasionally, people taking ranitidine may experience nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain. Even less frequently, other gastrointestinal side effects may include constipation and gas.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Brain\">2) Brain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The most common effects of ranitidine on the brain are [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9042985\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Confusion (2.1 events per million)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">Headache<\/a> (2.1 events per million)<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness (1.7 events per million)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The proportion <strong>increases with age and among hospitalized patients<\/strong>, as well as in those with liver or kidney failure. The symptoms are <strong>quickly reversed by stopping the treatment<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7510614\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Less frequently reported reactions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sleepiness<\/li>\n<li>Insomnia<\/li>\n<li>Disorientation<\/li>\n<li>Hallucinations<\/li>\n<li>Agitation<\/li>\n<li>Delirium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Rare neurological side effects of ranitidine have been reported. However, the incidence was lower than that found in the general population [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7331894\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Kidneys\">8) Kidneys<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although ranitidine is mostly eliminated through the urine, <strong>no evidence of kidney damage associated with this drug has been found<\/strong>. Dose reduction is only recommended in patients with strong kidney failure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9042985\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Other\">9) Other<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Because it reduces stomach acid, ranitidine may <strong>impair <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/iron-balance-blood-test-iron-deficiency-anemia-overload\/\"><strong>iron<\/strong><\/a><strong> absorption<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9692706\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21150767\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>On very rare occasions, patients taking ranitidine have <strong>developed a gout-like joint inflammation<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3979260\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One patient with eye nerve damage <strong>suffered from increased eye pressure<\/strong> after taking <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/chemical\/cimetidine\/?utm_source=seo&amp;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;utm_campaign=id00002\">cimetidine<\/a> and ranitidine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6122884\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One patient <strong>suffered from airway narrowing, breath shortness, and cough<\/strong> after taking ranitidine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16689191\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One case of a male patient <strong>suffering from impotence<\/strong> during treatment with ranitidine was reported [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6136792\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/disease\/anaphylaxis\/?utm_source=seo&amp;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;utm_campaign=id00002\"><strong>Anaphylaxis<\/strong><\/a> (a fast, life-threatening allergic reaction) <strong>can occur <\/strong>in 0.86 patients per million [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22059646\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Injection of ranitidine has <strong>caused 3 cases of heart arrest<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2507055\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9558936\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25969659\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">A very rare allergy to ranitidine has been recorded. Ranitidine may also impair iron absorption. Other side effects are extremely rare.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Other_Safety_Concerns\">Other Safety Concerns<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Drug_Interactions\">Drug Interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To help avoid interactions, your doctor should manage all of your medications carefully. Be sure to tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, or herbs you\u2019re taking. Talk to your healthcare provider to find out how ranitidine might interact with something else you are taking.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its acid-blocking activity, ranitidine <strong>reduces the absorption of drugs requiring acid in the stomach<\/strong>, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/trait\/hiv-1-infection\/?utm_source=seo&amp;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;utm_campaign=id00002\">HIV<\/a> medication (Atazanavir, Delavirdine, and Fosamprenavir) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18440920\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11327199\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=ranitidine+fosamprenavir\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Antifungal drugs (Itraconazole and Ketoconazole) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9594936\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1952845\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Cancer medication (Gefitinib, Dasatinib, and Erlotinib ) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28176470\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22147077\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25643050\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/health-effect\/antibiotic\/?utm_source=seo&amp;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;utm_campaign=id00002\">Antibiotics<\/a> (Enoxacin, Cefpodoxime, Bacampicillin, and Cefuroxime) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2751276\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2557183\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6091711\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Conversely, it <strong>increases the absorption of drugs requiring low acid<\/strong>, such as the sedatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Triazolam [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11503006\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Midazolam [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6135440\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a small trial on 12 healthy volunteers, ranitidine <strong>increased absorption of the HIV medication saquinavir<\/strong>.
