It is commonly known as the &#8220;happiness neurotransmitter&#8221; or the &#8220;happiness hormone&#8221; due to its prominent role in regulating <a href=\"https:\/\/get.selfdecode.com\/nm\/mood\/\">mood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Serotonin plays an important rol,e in the brain, where its main job is to transmit messages between nerve cells. According to some scientific theories, serotonin is involved in all aspects of human behavior [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4921409\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5864293\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, brain serotonin makes up less than 2% of the total serotonin found in our bodies. Most serotonin (over 90%) is actually made, stored, and released by the gut. In addition, about 5-8% of serotonin is stored in platelets circulating in the blood [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4921409\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29135035\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4393509\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>As such, the roles of serotonin in the body are many and diverse. It helps regulate many essential functions of the body, from mood and sleep to blood clotting and immune response.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Does_Serotonin_Do\"><strong>What Does Serotonin Do?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Originally discovered in the 1940s, serotonin \u2014 also known as <i>5-hydroxytryptamine<\/i>, or \u201c5-HT\u201d for short \u2014 is currently believed to play many pivotal roles in mood, behavior, gut, and overall optimal body function (<i>homeostasis<\/i>). So-called \u201cimbalances\u201d or other abnormalities in serotonin function have been linked with symptoms that may interfere with mental and physical health, and which can significantly impair quality of life [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19997855\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10876814\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23535352\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to some hypotheses and limited research, increasing serotonin levels may help with anxiety, depression, migraines, and constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. However, more large-scale studies are needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19997855\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10876814\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23535352\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Production_and_Removal\"><strong>Production and Removal<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The majority of serotonin is made, stored, and released by cells in the gut lining (<i>enterochromaffin cells<\/i>). These cells make serotonin from the amino acid <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tryptophan-health-benefits-tryptophan-deficiency\/\"><i>L-tryptophan<\/i><\/a>, which is the main \u201cbuilding block\u201d, or <i>metabolic precursor<\/i> of serotonin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4048923\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19361459\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Certain specific types of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/probiotics-gut-health\/\">bacteria<\/a> in the human digestive tract are believed to boost serotonin production in the gut. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gut-microbiome-factors\/\">Gut flora<\/a> actually balances tryptophan metabolism (via the <i>kynurenine pathway<\/i>), influencing the amount of L-tryptophan available for making serotonin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23328530?dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27392632\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, serotonin produced by the gut cannot cross the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/blood-brain-barrier-causes-tests-leaky-brain\/\">blood-brain barrier<\/a>. That is why brain cells must produce their own serotonin, either from <i>L-tryptophan<\/i> or <i>5-hydroxytryptophan<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/5-htp-serotonin-depression-risks-benefits\/\">5-HTP<\/a>), a byproduct of L-tryptophan [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2908021\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3415362\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, excess serotonin and the brain and gut is \u201cdeactivated\u201d by several different mechanisms. For example, proteins called <i>serotonin transporters<\/i> effectively \u201cclean up\u201d or \u201cremove\u201d (<i>re-uptake<\/i>) serotonin from neural synapses, and bring them back into neurons where it can be reused [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28213183\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4048923\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, serotonin that is released into the bloodstream either gets taken up (absorbed) by <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/platelets\/\">platelets<\/a>, or is broken down (<i>metabolized<\/i>) in the liver and lungs by enzymes called <i>monoamine oxidase<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/maoa\/\">MAO-A<\/a>), <i>aldehyde<\/i>, and <i>alcohol dehydrogenase<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29135035\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Serotonin is produced from tryptophan, both in the gut and the brain, where it performs different functions. Eventually, it is broken down by monoamine oxidase enzymes and other mechanisms. The relative balance between how quickly serotonin is produced and subsequently broken down is one of the main factors that determines how much available, \u201cactive\u201d serotonin a person has.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Other_Neurotransmitters\"><strong>Other Neurotransmitters<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>Monoamines<\/h4>\n<p>Serotonin is just one member of the \u201c<i>monoamine<\/i>\u201d family of neurotransmitters, which also includes other major neurotransmitters such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/norepinephrine-stress-hormone\/\">norepinephrine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dopamine\/\">dopamine<\/a>. Researchers currently believe that all of these neurotransmitters work together to influence and regulate <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">mood<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17389902\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>By extension, a person\u2019s levels of each of these neurotransmitters may affect their mood. For example, a meta-analysis of data from more than 50 different studies reported that artificially depleting the levels of these neurotransmitters can cause \u201clow mood\u201d and other related symptoms (this is typically done by depleting the body of the <i>metabolic precursors<\/i> needed to make these neurotransmitters, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tryptophan-health-benefits-tryptophan-deficiency\/\"><i>tryptophan<\/i><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/8-proven-health-benefits-tyrosine\/\"><i>tyrosine<\/i><\/a>). However, these effects were only observed in individuals who had certain pre-existing risk factors \u2014 such a prior diagnosis of depression, or a family history of depression disorders \u2014 and are not necessarily seen in otherwise healthy people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17389902\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Imbalances in the levels or relative activity of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine have also been proposed to play a role in other common psychiatric conditions, such as bipolar disorder [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25236552\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, some researchers have proposed that combined low levels of these three neurotransmitters \u2014 and not just low serotonin alone \u2014 may be important for understanding how these mood disorders originally develop and progress [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25236552\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Hormones<\/h4>\n<p>In the pineal gland, serotonin is used to make <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/melatonin\/\">melatonin<\/a>, a hormone that synchronizes the body\u2019s \u201cbiological clock\u201d or <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-keep-to-a-circadian-rhythm\/\">circadian rhythm<\/a>. When serotonin is low, that limits the amount of melatonin that can be made in the body, potentially interfering with the sleep-wake cycle [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25770211\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Serotonin is one of the primary \u201cmonoamine\u201d neurotransmitters, along with dopamine, norepinephrine, and others. Data are lacking to make such claims.<\/p>\n<p>Also, even if a study did find that low brain serotonin contributes to depression, serotonin levels are highly unlikely to be the <i>only<\/i> causative factor. Complex disorders like depression always involve multiple possible factors \u2014 including brain chemistry, environment, health status, and genetics \u2014 which may vary from one person to another, and which may interact in highly complex ways to cause any particular effect on health or well-being.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, limited studies have linked abnormal serotonin levels with [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5864293\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4393509\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4921409\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2139026\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3727814\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Various mental health conditions and psychiatric disorders, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>, aggression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), substance abuse, and schizophrenia<\/li>\n<li>Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)<\/li>\n<li>Heart disease<\/li>\n<li>Osteoporosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, scientists believe serotonin connects the gut microbiome with the brain \u2013 forming the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gut-bacteria-microbiome\/\">gut-brain axis<\/a>.\u201d Decreased diversity and stability of beneficial gut bacteria has been linked with serotonin-related health issues \u2014 especially in the elderly [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4367209\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25078296\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25860609\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Many different psychiatric disorders and other health conditions have been associated with abnormal serotonin levels. These include depression, anxiety, IBS, heart disease, and osteoporosis. However, \u201clow\u201d levels or other dysregulations of serotonin may not necessarily be their sole or direct cause, as many diverse factors can all interact together in complex ways to produce these conditions or symptoms.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"When_To_Increase_Serotonin_Levels\"><strong>When To &#8220;Increase&#8221; Serotonin Levels?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Like any bioactive substance in the body and brain, serotonin levels need to be carefully balanced in order to ensure optimal overall health.<\/p>\n<p>However, this important fact sometimes gets lost in the way that many people discuss certain popular health topics, such as serotonin and dopamine levels. Unfortunately, it\u2019s often possible to come away with the impression that having \u201cmore\u201d of these is always \u201cbetter\u201d \u2014 which is definitely not the case!<\/p>\n<p>For example, elevated levels of serotonin can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome\/\"><b><i>serotonin syndrome<\/i><\/b><\/a> \u2014 a serious medical condition that can be potentially fatal [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15260917\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK499992\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30115553\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, increasing serotonin levels can sometimes worsen the symptoms of other pre-existing conditions (such as OCD) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3675134\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22985509\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12798279\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it shouldn\u2019t be assumed that increasing serotonin levels or activity is necessarily always a good thing. For this reason, <b>it is crucially important to always talk to your doctor first before deciding to try any lifestyle changes or new supplements<\/b>, as only a qualified medical professional can help you determine the most effective and safest course of treatment for you, based on your specific health needs and medical history.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Testing_Serotonin\"><strong>Testing Serotonin<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Serotonin that gets released into the blood gets rapidly broken down in the liver and lungs, to inactive metabolites (such as 5-HIAA) that are eventually excreted in urine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29135035\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This is why blood and urine typically contain trace amounts of serotonin. By extension, a person\u2019s level of serotonin in these bodily fluids can sometimes be a useful diagnostic marker for serotonin-related abnormalities and health conditions. For example, larger quantities of serotonin in the blood\/urine can be observed in people with serotonin-producing tumors (<i>carcinoid tumors<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, there are a wide range of important limitations that reduce the reliability of urine tests when trying to \u201cestimate\u201d the actual levels of serotonin available in the brain. For example [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3818889\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Serotonin generally doesn&#8217;t cross the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/blood-brain-barrier-causes-tests-leaky-brain\/\"><i>blood-brain barrier<\/i><\/a> (BBB), meaning that the levels of serotonin in the blood don\u2019t necessarily match up with the levels of active serotonin in the brain.<\/li>\n<li>Even if serotonin did cross the BBB, it is released intermittently, and can be influenced by many different stimuli and other unpredictable factors. This means that a single measurement at a single point in time is not necessarily a reliable indicator of a person\u2019s \u201cnormal\u201d or \u201ctypical\u201d levels of serotonin.<\/li>\n<li>Furthermore, serotonin levels can vary quite a bit across different parts of the brain \u2014 so, once again, any single measurement might not necessarily say anything about how a specific part of the brain is using serotonin.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, serotonin levels can vary for the same person from one day to another \u2014 so in reality, its levels would have to be tested multiple times on different days to get a reliable \u201csnapshot\u201d of a person\u2019s overall levels of serotonin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For these reasons, it is useful to remain skeptical about the use of urine serotonin levels to check for so-called &#8220;neurotransmitter imbalances.&#8221; While many companies that provide these tests state that the levels in urine directly and reliably correspond to brain neurotransmitter levels, research has repeatedly shown that this is not necessarily the case [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3818889\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In addition, many of these companies have also been known to intentionally use extremely narrow reference ranges, without any scientific support whatsoever \u2014 often in order to sell supplements to their clients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-wdwi\/pr\/nutritional-supplement-provider-and-ceo-plead-guilty-false-claims-act-violations\">R<\/a>]!<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, more reliable tests of serotonin levels include <i>cerebrospinal fluid<\/i> (CSF) tests, or measurements of serotonin in blood <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/platelets\/\">platelets<\/a>.
