It is <i>methi<\/i> in Hindi, <i>hulba <\/i>in Arabic, <i>moshoseitaro <\/i>in Greek, <i>uluva <\/i>in Malayalam, <i>shoot<\/i> in Hebrew, and <i>dari<\/i> in Persian. Fenugreek is a common ingredient in spice powders in Indian cuisine. It is used fresh in salads and cooked or dried in other dishes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4894452\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Today, it is most often taken by athletes, diabetics, and people who struggle to maintain normal levels of fat in their blood [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12611558\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Nutrition_Facts\"><b>Nutrition Facts<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Fenugreek oil <\/b>contains a high concentration of <b>polyunsaturated fats<\/b> (approximately 84%). According to some studies, people who eat a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fats (compared to saturated and monounsaturated fats) may have healthier hearts and better blood vessel repair after injury [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5136421\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fenugreek is also rich in dietary fiber, which accounts for between 45 and 50% of the seeds by weight. Many plants produce different saponins; plants use these soap-like compounds as weapons against disease and plant-eating animals. However, some herbivorous animals may learn that some saponins are healthy (or, at least, not dangerous) and will deliberately consume the plants that make them [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5946140\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some research suggests that certain saponins may help protect against cancer. People who eat a lot of safe dietary saponins tend to have lower <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a>, sugar, and fat in the blood and a lower incidence of blood clotting and kidney stones. Thus, a substance that blocks these enzymes should increase the ratio of testosterone to estrogen and testosterone to DHT. Much more research will be required to confirm any effect of fenugreek on testosterone.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, sex hormone binding globulin, or SHBG, binds to testosterone in the blood and decreases free testosterone. Only one study has investigated the effect of fenugreek on SHBG so far. This study found <b>no significant change in SHBG<\/b> after two months of supplementation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25914334\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">According to limited early studies, men taking fenugreek extracts may have lower aromatase and 5-alpha reductase activity, which has the potential to increase testosterone.<\/div><\/div>\n<h4><b>Insulin<\/b><b> &amp; Blood Sugar<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>According to proponents of medicinal fenugreek, an amino acid found in fenugreek (4-hydroxyisoleucine) <b>increases<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><b>insulin<\/b><\/a><b> production<\/b> in the pancreas; increased insulin generally causes blood sugar to decline, though chronically high insulin promotes <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin resistance<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9519714\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2453638\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>Cancer<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>To understand fenugreek\u2019s anticancer potential, we\u2019re going to zoom into its effects on cancer on a cellular level.<\/p>\n<p>Saponins in fenugreek may deactivate key cancer-promoting pathways. Specifically, in one study, tumors exposed to a saponin called diosgenin grew much more slowly. The treated cells produced less <b>tumor necrosis factor <\/b>(<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\"><b>TNF<\/b><\/a>) and two more proteins (IKK and p65). The authors concluded that diosgenin blocked the inflammatory hub <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-b\/\">NF-\u03baB<\/a> and <b>increased the rate at which cancer cells died <\/b>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16331273\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another similar saponin, protodioscin, was similarly associated with cell death in human leukemia cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16331273\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4739449\/\">R<\/a>]. But remember, these were cell studies and not clinical trials.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects_Safety\"><b>Side Effects &amp; Safety<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is one reported case of a man developing <b>pulmonary embolism<\/b>, or a blood clot in the lung, after taking a testosterone-boosting supplement containing fenugreek. The mechanism of this event was unclear [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5630464\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to some researchers, people who are <b>allergic to chickpeas<\/b> may also have adverse reactions to fenugreek because the two plants contain similar proteins and allergens. Some patients reported wheezing and spasms in the airway after consuming fenugreek [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12611558\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fenugreek seed extract has been associated with hyperthyroidism in rats. If you have <b>thyroid problems<\/b>, consult your doctor before using fenugreek [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28407664\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, fenugreek was used to induce labor. Because of its potential to affect uterine contractions, fenugreek <b>should not be eaten or taken during pregnancy<\/b>. While fenugreek is a relatively common foodstuff, little formal research exists on its effects during breastfeeding [<a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/fenugreek\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12611558\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fenugreek contains compounds that act like <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\">estrogen<\/a> in the body.
