When tightly controlled, it is important for healing and the immune response, but if it gets out of control, it can contribute to autoimmunity and tissue damage.<\/p>\n<p>Many probiotic bacteria are under investigation for their apparent anti-inflammatory effects. In this post, we&#8217;ll explore the benefits that have been studied so far. Remember that probiotics may not be right for everyone; talk to your doctor before starting a new probiotic supplement.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_For\">Possibly Effective For<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Inflammation\"><b>1) Inflammation<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Supplementation with a synbiotic, which is a mixture of probiotic bacteria (in this case <i>L. casei<\/i>, <i>L. rhamnosus<\/i>, <i>S. thermophilus<\/i>, <i>B. breve<\/i>, <i>L. acidophilus<\/i>, <i>B. longum<\/i>, <i>L. delbrueckii<\/i> ssp.<i> bulgaricus<\/i>) and nutrients for the bacteria to feed on (in this case, fructo-oligosaccharides) reduced inflammation markers in adults (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4926461\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. longum<\/i> ssp. <i>infantis<\/i> <b>reduced proinflammatory markers in patients with ulcerative colitis<\/b>,<b> chronic fatigue syndrome<\/b>,<b> and psoriasis<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3744517\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. casei <\/i>improved natural killer (NK) cell activity and produced a more anti-inflammatory cytokine profile in healthy non-immunocompromised elderly subjects (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23307112\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. paracasei <\/i>significantly increased the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and stimulated the innate immune system in human enterocytes and dendritic cells (DCs) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25887178\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. delbrueckii <\/i>ssp. <i>lactis<\/i> seems to have <b>anti-inflammatory effects<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3897545\/\">R<\/a>). Skimmed milk with <i>L. delbrueckii <\/i>ssp. <i>bulgaricus<\/i> inhibits the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines produced by accessory<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-and-decrease-white-blood-cells\/\"> white blood cells<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3449529\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. acidophilus <\/i>reduced inflammation in human intestinal epithelial cells (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4166720\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. animalis<\/i> ssp. <i>lactis<\/i> added to yogurt post-fermentation was <b>anti-inflammatory <\/b>in healthy adults (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26621631\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. animalis<\/i> ssp. <i>lactis<\/i> inhibited inflammation in elderly volunteers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16794305\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. longum<\/i> ssp. <i>infantis<\/i> suppressed proinflammatory<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\"> IL-17<\/a> cytokine production and may be useful in the treatment of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\"> Th17<\/a>-mediated diseases (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18636171\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In one study, <i>L. reuteri <\/i><b>inhibited<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-beta\/\"> <b>NF-\u03baB<\/b><\/a>, one of the most important factors in <b>reducing whole-body inflammation<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18331465\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>See individual probiotic posts for animal studies and technical information.<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Probiotic and synbiotic supplements reduced markers of inflammation in studies of healthy adults and in patients with inflammatory conditions like ulcerative colitis and chronic fatigue.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Asthma\"><b>2) Asthma<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Human Studies<\/b>:<\/h4>\n<p><i>L. salivarius<\/i><b> decreased the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and showed beneficial immunomodulatory activity in asthmatic subjects<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4446640\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. breve<\/i> showed promising probiotic properties and beneficial immunomodulatory activity in allergic asthma (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4446640\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>C. butyricum<\/i> <b>improved asthma<\/b> and serum specific IgE in the patients treated with specific immunotherapy (SIT), increased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/il-10\/\"> IL-10<\/a>, and converted antigen-specific B cells to regulatory B cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4746628\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Certain probiotics have decreased inflammatory cytokines and beneficially modulated the immune system in patients with asthma.<\/div><\/div>\n<h4><b>Animal Studies<\/b>:<\/h4>\n<p>Oral administration of <i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> attenuated the features of allergic asthma in mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3328732\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25440975\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. salivarius<\/i> decreased allergen-induced airway response in mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20555399\">R<\/a>). It also alleviated asthma symptoms like airway hyperreactivity and airway inflammation in mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4555661\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. gasseri<\/i> <b>attenuated allergen-induced airway inflammation<\/b> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\"> IL-17<\/a> pro-inflammatory immune response in mice with allergic asthma (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21996276\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. lactis<\/i> significantly attenuated atopic esophageal and bronchoalveolar eosinophilic inflammation in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27259693\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. breve<\/i> had strong<b> anti-inflammatory properties<\/b> in asthmatic mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4029990\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4819948\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24440361\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. paracasei <\/i>administration to mothers during gestation\/lactation protected against airway inflammation in mice offspring (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3391241\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. longum<\/i> <b>attenuated allergic airway inflammation<\/b> in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22705947\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. bifidum<\/i> significantly decreased airway hyperresponsiveness, decreased lung inflammation and <b>lowered the<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\"> <b>Th2<\/b><\/a><b> response<\/b> in allergic mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22205338\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16079493\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Allergic_Rhinitis\"><b>3) Allergic Rhinitis<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>17 out of 22 trials in a review showed a significant benefit of probiotics clinically, whereas eight trials showed significant improvement in immunologic parameters in allergic rhinitis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27442711\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Citrus juice fermented by <i>L. plantarum<\/i> improved the symptoms of Japanese cedar pollinosis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4219981\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>C. butyricum<\/i> markedly <b>enhanced the efficacy of SIT on allergic rhinitis<\/b> in patients with allergies (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27486985\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Co-administration of <i>C. butyricum<\/i> markedly enhanced the treatment of allergic rhinitis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27486985\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> supplementation showed good clinical and immunologic response in children with allergic rhinitis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27401319\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers with seasonal allergic rhinitis treated with <i>L. casei<\/i> showed a significant reduction in levels of antigen-induced cytokines (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18510694\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A significant reduction of nasal symptoms and improved quality of life were achieved in patients with Japanese cedar pollinosis, who received <i>L. paracasei <\/i>when pollen scattering was low. However, the effects were limited during the peak period (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19772761\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At least five clinical studies with <i>L. paracasei<\/i> demonstrated clinically <b>significant improvements in allergic rhinitis<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27442711\">R<\/a>), while one did not (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4673783\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Subjects with a medical history of allergic rhinitis to grass pollen that received <i>L. paracasei<\/i>-fermented milk had <b>lower nasal congestion<\/b> and less nasal itching (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21395878\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In children with perennial allergic rhinitis, <i>L. paracasei <\/i><b>improved symptoms of sneezing<\/b>,<b> itchy nose<\/b>,<b> and swollen eyes<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24269033\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. paracasei <\/i>improved the quality of life of subjects with persistent allergic rhinitis who were being treated with an oral H1-antihistamine. In this study, nasal symptoms did not change, but ocular symptoms consistently improved (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24569538\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Heat-killed <i>L. paracasei<\/i> effectively <b>improved the overall quality of life<\/b> in patients with allergic rhinitis induced by house dust mite (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16101937\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. acidophilus <\/i><b>alleviated allergic symptoms in patients<\/b> with Japanese cedar pollinosis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22705785\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16195581\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. acidophilus <\/i>alleviated the symptoms in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15653517\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Heat-killed <i>L. gasseri<\/i> <b>improved nasal symptoms<\/b> and pollen-specific IgE levels in subjects with Japanese cedar pollinosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19734682\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The addition of <i>L. johnsonii<\/i> to levocetirizine <b>improved perennial allergic rhinitis<\/b> in children (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22513081\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Intake of yogurt or powder supplemented with <i>B. longum<\/i> <b>alleviated subjective symptoms<\/b> and affected blood markers <b>of allergy<\/b> in individuals with Japanese cedar pollinosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17893165\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19291170\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17259812\"> R<\/a>). In infants at high risk of developing allergic disease, certain probiotics reduced eczema and atopic sensitization.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Atopic_Dermatitis\"><b>5) Atopic Dermatitis<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The use of <i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> by mothers lowered the risk of developing atopic dermatitis during the first 2 years of life (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4748908\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> decreased symptoms of atopic dermatitis after an 8-week treatment in children aged 4 &#8211; 48 months (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26733351\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Daily intake of citrus juice containing heat-killed <i>L. plantarum<\/i> alleviated symptoms of atopic dermatitis in humans (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4735031\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. salivarius<\/i> improved symptoms in children (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25291124\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21895621\"> R<\/a>) and adults with atopic dermatitis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22230409\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Heat-killed <i>L. paracasei <\/i><b>improved atopic dermatitis<\/b> (AD) in adult patients (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21269308\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Long-term oral administration of <i>L. acidophilus <\/i><b>restored<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\"> <b>Th1<\/b><\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\"><b>Th2<\/b><\/a><b> balance<\/b> and <b>ameliorated the symptoms of atopic dermatitis<\/b> in children (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20861645\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Prolonged ingestion of <i>L. acidophilus<\/i> significantly decreased the eczema area and severity index in patients with adult atopic dermatitis (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27108169\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25660281\"> R<\/a>).
