Read on to learn more.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Probiotics_for_Detox\">Probiotics for Detox?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Certain probiotic bacteria have demonstrated an ability to bind to some toxins (like heavy metals) and even degrade others (like certain organophosphate pesticides). Could probiotic supplements help prevent damage to the human body caused by such toxins? In this post, we&#8217;ll discuss the evidence that suggests just that.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to talk to your doctor before adding a probiotic supplement to your daily routine, and never use probiotics as a replacement for a doctor&#8217;s prescription or recommendation.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\">Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Toxins_and_Pollutants\"><b>1) Toxins and Pollutants<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Dietary exposure to heavy metals has detrimental effects on human and animal health, even at low concentrations. <i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> and <i>P. freudenreichii,<\/i> alone or in combination, were found to bind cadmium and lead efficiently at the low concentration ranges commonly observed in foods (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17110980\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, dietary supplementation with <i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> reduced the absorption and toxicity of consumed organophosphate pesticides in <i>Drosophila<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27520820\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. plantarum<\/i> alleviated cadmium-induced cytotoxicity in human intestinal cells and mice in the laboratory (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27208136\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4054212\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. plantarum<\/i> protected against aluminum toxicity in mice, possibly by reducing intestinal aluminum absorption and tissue accumulation and ameliorating liver damage, kidney, and brain<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26610803\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Treatment with <i>L. plantarum<\/i> alleviated copper toxicity, possibly by increasing copper excretion and reducing the accumulation of copper in tissues. <i>L. plantarum also <\/i>reversed<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> induced by copper exposure, recovered the ALT and AST blood levels and improved the spatial memory of mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4659595\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. casei <\/i>and <i>L. helveticus<\/i> may bind to and inactivate heterocyclic aromatic amines (HACs), the most abundant mutagens in fried red meat, decreasing their concentration and their toxicity (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4961978\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3500876\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. casei <\/i>decreased the cytotoxic effects of pesticides on human cells (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4961978\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. casei<\/i> supplementation reduced the level of aflatoxin in blood and improved the adverse effects of aflatoxin on body weight and blood parameters in rats (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23351087\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21658402\"> R<\/a>). In one clinical study, <strong>a fermented milk drink containing <i>L. casei<\/i> appeared to reduce aflatoxin toxicity in 71 healthy human volunteers<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26490018\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. paracasei <\/i>reduced the adverse effects of Zearalenone (ZEN), an estrogenic toxin produced by <i>Fusarium<\/i> fungi species in pre- or post-harvest cereals in mice (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23464632\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Organophosphorus hydrolase (OpdB) from <i>L. brevis<\/i> is able to degrade organophosphorus pesticides (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20405842\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>S. cerevisiae<\/i> possesses the ability to bind and degrade mycotoxins (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3257658\/\">R<\/a>). <i>S. cerevisiae<\/i> improved weight gain and <b>reduced genotoxicity of aflatoxin<\/b> in mice fed with contaminated corn (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16979277\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Some species of probiotics, especially <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> species, bind (and sometimes degrade) certain toxins and pollutants that can cause problems in the human body, such as heavy metals and organophosphate pesticides.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Toxins_and_Carcinogens_in_the_Gut\"><b>2) Toxins and Carcinogens in the Gut<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a cell-based study, <i>Lactobacillus rhamnosus<\/i> GG bound to mold toxins purported to cause \u201cleaky gut\u201d and inflammation. Some researchers therefore believe that <i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> could potentially prevent the negative effects of mold toxins in the gut (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17449679\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18343010\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In rats, Lactobacillus and other lactic acid bacteria protected the gut and liver cells from cancer-causing chemicals found in foods, such as heterocyclic amines (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12970070\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9532774\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Probiotics also reduced harm from aflatoxin, a mold toxin that is a potent carcinogen in rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16980432\/\">R<\/a>). In addition, probiotics reduced biomarkers of liver cancer risk in humans (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16685066\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\"><em>Lactobacillus<\/em> gut flora may bind to toxins and carcinogens in the gut. Probiotics also reduced markers of liver cancer risk in a clinical study.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"3_For_Smokers\"><b>3) For Smokers<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cigarette smoking reduces<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/intro-natural-killer-cells-increase-decrease\/\"> natural killer cell<\/a> (NK cell) activity. <i>L. casei<\/i> intake prevented the smoke-dependent NK activity reduction in Italian male smokers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22142891\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In healthy shift workers,<i> L. casei<\/i> reduced the total number of clinical infectious diseases (CIDs) in the subgroup of smokers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21504972\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>B. breve<\/i> suppressed inflammatory agents in macrophages; some researchers believe it may be useful in cigarette smoke-associated diseases such as Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4552661\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>L. salivarius <\/i>improved periodontal clinical parameters in smokers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18727656\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\"><em>Lactobacillus<\/em> and <em>B. breve<\/em> probiotics supported immune function and reduced the incidence of infectious disease in clinical studies of smokers.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\"><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Takeaway\">Takeaway<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Certain species of probiotics\u2014primarily <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> species\u2014bind to toxins and pollutants in a laboratory setting.
