If used in the right context, it also has several potential benefits to our well-being &#8211; from lowering the risk of diabetes to helping with menstrual disorders and overweight.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Cinnamon_Varieties\">Cinnamon Varieties<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are two main varieties of cinnamon available on the market today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ceylon cinnamon<\/strong>: <em>Cinnamomum<\/em> <em>verum <\/em>is also known as &#8220;true&#8221; cinnamon. This variety is more expensive and less toxic to the liver because it&#8217;s much lower in coumarin, a natural constituent that promotes blood thinning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cassia cinnamon<\/strong>: <em>Cinnamomum cassia. <\/em>This type is much more commonly available and is generally what you&#8217;ll be given if you request cinnamon at a store or restaurant [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/docrep\/x5326e\/x5326e07.htm\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The major compound in cinnamon is called cinnamaldehyde, which is oxidized into cinnamic acid. In the liver, this cinnamic acid is oxidized into <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/some-preservatives-block-inflammation-and-autoimmune-disease\/\">sodium benzoate<\/a> (NaB) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4478015\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>After it is consumed, NaB rapidly passes through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Similarly, after the whole spice cinnamon has been consumed, NaB can be detected in the hippocampus of the brain [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4478015\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Snapshot\"><a id=\"post-8473-_ad925sfmekfd\"><\/a><strong>Snapshot<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-8473-_6irkkxjffqnh\"><\/a><strong>Proponents<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity.<\/li>\n<li>May help with menstrual disorders<\/li>\n<li>May preserve oral health<\/li>\n<li>May help balance blood sugar and<\/li>\n<li>May help lose weight and improve blood fat profile<\/li>\n<li>Protects against cardiovascular disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><a id=\"post-8473-_5r861nlx33mv\"><\/a><strong>Skeptics<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Insufficient and contradictory evidence for most benefits<\/li>\n<li>Can be allergenic for some people.<\/li>\n<li>Large amounts of the Cassia variety of cinnamon can cause blood to thin too much.<\/li>\n<li>Ceylon cinnamon is a bit expensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Health_Benefits_of_Cinnamon\"><a id=\"post-8473-_ywlefflxwlwy\"><\/a><strong>Health Benefits of Cinnamon<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following benefits are attributed to the spice cinnamon and\/or its metabolite, sodium benzoate:<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_for\"><a id=\"post-8473-_5i86h1nhy6p0\"><\/a><strong>Possibly Effective for:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"Menstrual_Disorders\"><a id=\"post-8473-_zhfdppactdc2\"><\/a><strong>Menstrual Disorders<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 80 women, cinnamon taken during the first 72 hours of a menstrual cycle reduced menstrual cramps [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30396627\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have irregular menstrual cycles, hormone imbalances (excess of androgens), and metabolic risk factors (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\"> resistance<\/a> and high blood fat levels). In a clinical trial on 45 women with this condition, taking cinnamon supplements helped improve menstrual regularity. In 3 other trials on 165 women, cinnamon improved <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin sensitivity<\/a> and blood fat profile (it reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides<\/a>, total <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a> cholesterol while increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a> cholesterol) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24813595\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17296187\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29250843\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29737802\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although limited, the evidence suggests that cinnamon may help with menstrual disorders (especially with PCOS). You may discuss with your doctor if taking cinnamon as an add-on to your treatment regime is recommended. Never take cinnamon in place of what your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_for\"><a id=\"post-8473-_5hazzuc2z3oe\"><\/a><strong>Insufficient Evidence for:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Diabetes\"><a id=\"post-8473-_c4gjegckhh1w\"><\/a><strong>1) Diabetes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Preliminary evidence suggests that <strong>cinnamon reduces<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><strong>insulin<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\"><strong> resistance<\/strong><\/a> and may function like <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a> (<strong>insulin mimic<\/strong>), thus helping lower blood sugar levels [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2901047\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18234131\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11506060\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9762007\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In 5 clinical trials on over 300 people with type 2 diabetes, <strong>cinnamon lowered <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting\/\"><strong>fasting<\/strong><\/a><strong> blood sugar levels by up to 10-29%. However, it was ineffective in 3 trials on 177 people with this condition<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14633804\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16634838\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17563345\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20854384\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22749176\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26362826\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16549460\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5622751\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cinnamon also reduced blood sugar and insulin resistance in 2 clinical trials on 52 obese people and one trial on 116 people with metabolic syndrome, but not in another trial on 10 prediabetic people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19571155\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23102179\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5469078\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21929834\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A dietary supplement with cinnamon, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/chromium\/\">chromium<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/carnosine\/\">carnosine<\/a> decreased fasting blood sugar and promoted <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">weight loss<\/a> in a clinical trial on 62 obese, pre-diabetic people. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/benefits-of-honey\/\">honey<\/a> supplemented with these compounds was ineffective in another trial on 12 people with type 2 diabetes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4583280\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25986159\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In 3 clinical trials on 52 healthy people, cinnamon lowered blood sugar levels after meals. Its compound cinnamyl isobutyrate was similarly effective in another trial on 26 people. Continued cinnamon intake for 14 days improved blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity in 8 healthy men, but the effects quickly disappeared when they stopped taking it [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4246455\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17924872\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19917452\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6175204\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19159947\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cassia cinnamon (<em>C<\/em>. <em>burmannii<\/em>) helped lower blood sugar levels after meals in 30 healthy people and 10 obese women. However, it had no effect on insulin sensitivity in these obese women and in 21 prediabetic people. It was equally ineffective at lowering fasting sugar in 60 people with type 2 diabetes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4516848\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26716656\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4180052\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17718288\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although most clinical trials suggest that Ceylan (but not Cassia) cinnamon improves blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity, there are many studies that failed to show any effects. For this reason, it\u2019s difficult to draw conclusions.
