In the review aimed at dermatologists, scientists\u00a0 claimed that maintaining normal vitamin D blood levels is important for people with the following skin problems [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28994020\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eczema<\/li>\n<li>Psoriasis<\/li>\n<li>Vitiligo<\/li>\n<li>Polymorphous light eruption (skin rash triggered by sun exposure)<\/li>\n<li>Mycosis fungoides (skin lymphoma)<\/li>\n<li>Alopecia areata (autoimmune hair loss)<\/li>\n<li>Systemic lupus erythematosus<\/li>\n<li>Melanoma (a type of skin cancer)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite this, additional large-scale studies need to determine the benefits of monitoring vitamin D levels in people with diverse skin disorders.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Some scientists believe that people with skin problems like eczema, psoriasis, and hair loss need to be monitored to ensure they&#8217;re not deficient in vitamin D. More evidence is needed to support this practice.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Might_Help_with_Psoriasis\">Might Help with Psoriasis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some studies, vitamin D levels are significantly lower in patients with psoriasis, which is an <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oral-tolerance\/\">autoimmune disease<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22387034\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22013980\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This vitamin may be important for psoriasis since it regulates the production of keratinocytes in the skin and immune cells. Scientists think that psoriasis starts off when overactive keratinocytes trigger an autoimmune response. Each time this reaction takes place, people with psoriasis are likely to experience flare-ups (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16162035\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1337425\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6043636\/#S2title\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In one pilot study, a high daily vitamin D dose of 35,000 IU was safe and effective for psoriasis patients. However, this study only included 25 patients. High-quality, large-scale studies need to replicate these findings before we can draw any conclusions from them (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3897595\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Creams and lotions with synthetic vitamin D analogues (calcipotriol and\/or tacalcitol) are considered first-line treatment for mild-to-moderate psoriasis. These treatments are sometimes taken in combination with other systemic therapies in more severe cases of the disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15577145\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2536537\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to remember that studies show that topical applications are beneficial but the data on oral supplementation is mixed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/scaly-skin\/psoriasis\/diagnosis-and-treatment-of-psoriasis\/synthetic-vitamin-d\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28849682\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Creams with vitamin D analogues improve psoriasis symptoms. No solid evidence supports oral supplementation, though it shows some promise. More research is needed.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Might_Improve_Eczema\">Might Improve Eczema<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Atopic dermatitis (eczema) affects up to 20% of children and up to 3% of adults (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/FullText\/370220\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Studies have linked vitamin D deficiency with atopic dermatitis. However, data are lacking to say whether vitamin D deficiency can cause psoriasis or increase the risk of this disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21087229\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some scientists believe that vitamin D supplementation may improve disease symptoms and severity. It is also considered as a safe and tolerable therapy when used at the recommended doses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27061361\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22395583\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In cell-based studies, vitamin D increased the production of cathelicidin, an antimicrobial deficient in atopic dermatitis. More studies are needed to explore its mechanism of action and efficacy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimmunol.org\/content\/173\/5\/2909.long\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25562552\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">People with eczema are commonly deficient in vitamin D. Supplementation may improve some symptoms, according to limited research.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Effects_on_Acne\">Effects on Acne<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In people with acne, inflammation is a result of the immune response targeting bacteria in the skin: <em>P. acnes<\/em>. In one study, <em>P. acnes<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\">activated Th17 cells<\/a>, a response that vitamin D blocks. Vitamin D also reduced inflammation in studies on skin cells. Based on these mechanisms, scientists concluded that vitamin shows promise for fighting acne. Further studies are needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4642156\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Role_in_Wound_Healing\">Role in Wound Healing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to a cell-based study, vitamin D increases the activity of an antimicrobial skin protein called <em>cathelicidin<\/em>. This protein seems to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-foods-exercise-right-type-th1-vs-th2-dominance\/\">balance immunity<\/a> in the skin by promoting wound healing and tissue repair [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4642156\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one human study, cathelicidin expression was increased during the early stages of normal wound healing. Other studies suggest cathelicidin helps regenerate and strengthen the skin barrier, increasing so-called <em>reepithelization<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4642156\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, more research is needed to determine if vitamin D affects wound healing, whether as oral supplements or creams and other topical formulations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Despite some promising findings, the effects of vitamin D on acne and wound healing have yet to be determined.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Can_Vitamin_D_Boost_Hair_Strength\">Can Vitamin D Boost Hair Strength?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Effects_on_Hair_Loss\">Effects on Hair Loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Studies show an important role of vitamin D receptor in hair loss (<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jocd.12224\/abstract\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Scientists believe that the function of the vitamin D receptor is essential for the maintenance of a normal hair cycle. Animal and cell-based studies show that defective vitamin D receptor function may lead to defective growth and loss of hair follicle (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4127032\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20138991\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, limited studies have associated hair loss in both men and women with decreased blood levels of vitamin D. In some studies, lower blood levels were linked with more severe hair loss (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5007917\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24655364\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23428658\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Based on this, some scientists advocate for screening patients with hair loss for vitamin D deficiencies. They think that these patients are likely to benefit from supplementation, which shows promise for helping regrow hair (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24655364\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Though these findings give many people hope, it&#8217;s still too early to say whether vitamin D can help regrow hair in people who are deficient.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Vitamin D may support normal hair growth.
