These cells work to prevent both allergic and autoimmune tendencies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20148422\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ref-link=\"4\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Next, let&#8217;s take a look at various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions and whether vitamin D can affect them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Experimental research suggests that by balancing the immune response, vitamin D helps prevent excess inflammation and autoimmunity.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Vitamin_D_Autoimmune_Disorders\">Vitamin D &amp; Autoimmune Disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Might_Be_Beneficial_in_Multiple_Sclerosis\">2) Might Be Beneficial in Multiple Sclerosis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite some promising findings, <strong>there is insufficient evidence to rate the safety and effectiveness of vitamin D in multiple sclerosis<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Higher vitamin D blood levels may be protective against developing multiple sclerosis (MS), according to some researchers. In one study on women, each 10 nmol\/L increase in blood vitamin levels was associated with a 20% decreased the risk of multiple sclerosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18701572\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20494325\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17179460\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Also, higher vitamin D levels were associated with a reduced worsening and recurrence of multiple sclerosis symptoms. In a study, each 10 nmol\/l increase resulted in up to a 12% reduction in recurrence (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20695012\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16684809\">R<\/a>). Additional large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings.<\/p>\n<p>According to another study, optimal blood concentrations of this vitamin may reduce disease-related complications (including increased bone degradation, fractures, and muscle weakness) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ejcn\/journal\/v58\/n8\/full\/1601952a.html\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One group of researchers found that increased sun exposure during ages 6 &#8211; 15 years was associated with a decreased risk of multiple sclerosis. Similarly, outdoor activities were associated with a reduced multiple sclerosis risk (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20463038\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC169645\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Having these findings in mind, some scientists believe that multiple sclerosis occurs less often in people who are likely to have high vitamin D blood levels, as those living in sunny climates, at high altitudes, and areas with a diet rich in fish oils that contain this vitamin (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00207237408709630\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, vitamin D has an anti-inflammatory action, which can be beneficial in multiple sclerosis. It decreases the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and results in a shift from a Th1 to a Th2 phenotype. The Th1 phenotype tends to be more common in people with autoimmunity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3197632\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17961136\">R2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, it is important to remember that the above evidence isn&#8217;t conclusive. Vitamin D supplementation in people with MS appears to be safe, but at high doses, it can lead to changes in calcium levels. More research is needed to determine whether it&#8217;s truly beneficial (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/multiple-sclerosis\/expert-answers\/vitamin-d-and-ms\/faq-20058258\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Studies suggest MS is less common in people with higher vitamin D levels. Maintaining higher levels might also reduce disease recurrence. However, evidence is lacking to recommend supplementation in people with MS.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Might_Help_with_Psoriasis\">3) Might Help with Psoriasis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some studies, vitamin D levels are significantly lower in patients with psoriasis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22387034\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22013980\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In one pilot study, a high daily vitamin D dose of 35,000 IU was safe and effective for psoriasis patients. However, this study only included 25 patients. High-quality, large-scale studies need to replicate these findings before we can draw any conclusions from them (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3897595\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Creams and lotions with synthetic vitamin D analogues (calcipotriol and\/or tacalcitol) are considered first-line treatment for mild-to-moderate psoriasis. These treatments are sometimes taken in combination with other systemic therapies in more severe cases of the disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15577145\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2536537\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to remember that studies show that topical applications are beneficial but the data on oral supplementation is mixed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/scaly-skin\/psoriasis\/diagnosis-and-treatment-of-psoriasis\/synthetic-vitamin-d\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28849682\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Creams with vitamin D analogues improve psoriasis symptoms. No solid evidence supports oral supplementation, though it shows some promise. More research is needed.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Deficiency_in_Autoimmune_Thyroid_Conditions\">4) Deficiency in Autoimmune Thyroid Conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Vitamin D deficiency is associated with autoimmune thyroid disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4133032\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3993051\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Deficiency is common in patients with Graves\u2019 disease. It may exacerbate the onset and\/or development of Graves\u2019 disease and is associated with an increased size of the thyroid gland (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11403104\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3509322\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Correction of the deficiency may be able to reverse it (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4133032\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin insufficiency is associated with Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21751884\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/nuclmed.web.auth.gr\/magazine\/eng\/jan14\/9.pdf\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D deficiency severity was associated with the duration of the disease, thyroid gland size, and antibody levels (<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.aace.com\/doi\/10.4158\/EP12376.OR?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%3dpubmed\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Vitamin D deficiency has been linked with autoimmune thyroid problems. The benefits of supplementing are still uncertain.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Plays_a_Role_in_Systemic_Lupus_Erythematosus\">5) Plays a Role in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) activity is associated with lower vitamin D blood levels (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20439290\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, there is<strong> insufficient evidence to support supplementation<\/strong> in people with lupus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 65% of the patients with SLE had vitamin D blood levels &lt; 30 ng\/mL (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3149865\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16431339\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Limited research suggests that vitamin D supplementation has an effect on the immune system in patients with SLE. It decreases memory B cells, effector Th1 and Th17 cells, and increases Tregs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3580532\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">People with lupus are commonly deficient in vitamin D, though the benefits of supplementation have yet to be determined.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Rheumatoid_Arthritis\">6) Rheumatoid Arthritis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Early findings are promising, but there is still <strong>insufficient evidence<\/strong> to determine the safety and effectiveness of supplementation in people with rheumatoid arthritis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D supplementation suppresses Th17 cell cytokines and has the effect potential to improve symptoms in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26268060\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>According to some estimates, vitamin D deficiency is present in 30-63% of people with rheumatoid arthritis (<a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10067-012-2080-7\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Greater intake of vitamin D may be associated with a lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis in older women (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14730601\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Other researchers have associated low vitamin D blood levels with rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and severity. Some believe that supplementation is beneficial for people this disease, though this remains controversial (<a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10067-012-2080-7\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3855937\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In one study, 500 IU\/day of vitamin D along with anti-rheumatic therapy improved pain relief in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22004229\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Large clinical studies are needed to determine the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation (alone or as an add-on) in people with rheumatoid arthritis<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Despite promising early results, more research is required to confirm the benefits of vitamin D for people with rheumatoid arthritis.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Vitamin_D_Chronic_Inflammatory_Disorders\">Vitamin D &amp; Chronic Inflammatory Disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Inflammatory_Bowel_Disease\">7) Inflammatory Bowel Disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is chronic inflammation of the gut that includes Crohn&#8217;s disease and ulcerative colitis.<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D supplementation may have a beneficial role in IBD, but there&#8217;s <strong>insufficient evidence<\/strong> to determine their effectiveness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15306569\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2731177\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Studies in mice indicate that this vitamin plays a crucial role in this disease (<a href=\"http:\/\/press.endocrine.org\/doi\/10.1210\/me.2003-0281?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%3dpubmed\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D may have an anti-inflammatory effect in patients with IBD.
