The first three are [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/6015\/chapter\/9\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pyridoxine (PN)<\/li>\n<li>Pyridoxal (PL)<\/li>\n<li>Pyridoxamine (PM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Their 5\u2032-phosphates make up the remaining three:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pyridoxine-5\u2032-phosphate (PNP)<\/li>\n<li><b>Pyridoxal-5\u2032-phosphate<\/b> <b>(PLP or P-5-P)<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Pyridoxamine-5\u2032-phosphate (PMP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are so-called <i>pyridoxine vitamers<\/i>. They all play unique roles, and your body can switch between them as needed. People with depression have low B6 levels, and this might explain why supplementing with vitamin B6 <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">reduced anxiety<\/a> in people with depression in some clinical trials [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3046018\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2572855\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>P5P is needed for the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/melatonin\/\">melatonin<\/a>, also known as <i>the sleep hormone<\/i>. Anecdotally, it helps prevent gynecomastia (abnormal breast growth) by lowering prolactin levels. Some prefer it over taking <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-dopa-levodopa\/\">L-DOPA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One pilot study suggests they might be right. In six healthy people, vitamin B6 infusions before exercise increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/growth-hormone-101\/\">growth hormone<\/a> levels and decreased prolactin levels, compared with placebo [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJM198208123070719?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%3Dpubmed\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, this study:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Had a tiny sample.<\/li>\n<li>Was conducted back in 1982. and no newer research has replicated its findings.<\/li>\n<li>Used vitamin B6, not P-5-P.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a recent study on mice and cells, P-5-P lowered both prolactin and growth hormone. It\u2019s hard to say how these cell-based findings translate to humans [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1513048\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Until more studies are out, it\u2019s hard to say whether using P-5-P (or vitamin B6) to prevent gynecomastia by lowering prolactin works or not.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Potential_Benefits\"><b>Potential Benefits<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Different conditions may deplete your vitamin B6, triggering nerve damage and other deficiency symptoms. They can also prevent deficiency caused by some drugs and diseases.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"P-5-P_Potential_Advantages_Over_Vitamin_B6\"><b>P-5-P Potential Advantages Over Vitamin B6<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence\">Insufficient Evidence:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i>No valid clinical evidence supports the potential P-5-P advantages in this section. Below is a summary of up-to-date animal studies, cell-based research, or low-quality clinical trials which should spark further investigation. However, you shouldn\u2019t interpret them as supportive of any health benefit.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Doesnt_Require_Conversion\"><b>1) Doesn&#8217;t Require Conversion<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Pyridoxal phosphate is the active form of vitamin B6, which doesn&#8217;t require conversion in your liver.
