It&#8217;s made from <i>Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/i>, a type of yeast used in brewing and baking [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4293462\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers grow<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/s-cerevisiae\/\"> <i>S. cerevisiae<\/i><\/a>, deactivate it using heat, and dry it to get the final product. They can select and culture specific strains of yeast for desired nutritional value and properties [<a href=\"http:\/\/agris.fao.org\/agris-search\/search.do?recordID=US8845403\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Nutritional yeast is a popular cooking ingredient, especially in<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/maximize-health-on-a-vegetarian-vegan-diet\/\"> vegan<\/a> dishes as a cheese substitute. People also use it to boost their immunity, energy levels, and intake of essential nutrients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3257658\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Nutritional_vs_Brewers_Yeast\"><b>Nutritional vs. Brewer&#8217;s Yeast<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Nutritional and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/benefits-brewers-yeast\/\"> brewer&#8217;s yeast<\/a> are close relatives: they both contain <i>S. cerevisiae<\/i>, but they slightly differ in the production process, nutritional value, and uses.<\/p>\n<p>Brewer&#8217;s yeast is a byproduct of the beer brewing industry, usually grown on hops or grains. The growth medium is<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\"> glucose<\/a> or molasses, which makes the final product gluten-free [<a href=\"http:\/\/agris.fao.org\/agris-search\/search.do?recordID=US8845403\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Unlike nutritional yeast, brewer&#8217;s yeast is naturally rich in<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/chromium\/\"> chromium<\/a>, which can help lower blood sugar levels. As such, brewer&#8217;s yeast might be a better option for people with diabetes. Nutritional yeast is usually fortified with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vitamin-b12\/\"> vitamin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/thiamine\/\"> B1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vitamin-b12\/\">2<\/a> and thus more suitable for vegans, who can be at risk of B12 deficiency [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3257658\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1375061\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Brewer&#8217;s yeast has a bitter taste that many find unpleasant; nutritional yeast has a nutty or cheesy flavor and blends well into various dishes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Brewer&#8217;s yeast may be more suitable for diabetics, but it has a bitter taste and may contain gluten. Nutritional yeast is usually fortified with vitamin B12, has no gluten, and tastes much better.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Nutrition_Facts\"><b>Nutrition Facts<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Nutritional yeast didn&#8217;t get its name by chance\u2014 it delivers a blast of high-quality protein, fiber, B vitamins, and minerals. However, yeasts don&#8217;t naturally contain this vitamin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4850488\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3257642\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>They produce a so-called pseudo-vitamin B12, which does not have biological activity in humans. It can compete with other forms of \u201cactive\u201d B12 and potentially worsen B12 deficiency [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5312744\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fortified products with added B12 can improve the intake of this vitamin. If you rely on nutritional yeast as your only B12 source, make sure to use a fortified product that meets your daily needs. In a study on 49 vegans, fortified nutritional yeast improved vitamin B12 status [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11146329\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23193625\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><i>Keep in mind, however, that nutritional yeast can\u2019t treat vitamin B12 or any other nutritional deficiency.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Folate\"><b>Folate<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i>S. cerevisiae<\/i> used by bakers is naturally rich in folate in the form of tetrahydrofolate and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (the active form). Fortified products usually have vitamin B12 and folate added.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Nutritional_Yeast_Benefits\"><b>Nutritional Yeast Benefits<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Heart_Health\"><b>1) Heart Health<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, with high blood pressure and cholesterol as major risk factors [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK11767\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>Cholesterol<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Nutritional yeast is packed with cholesterol-lowering components, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beta-glucans [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19519160\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10198754\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19571787\"> R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Niacin (which also raises<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\"> HDL<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12873710\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Nicotinamide riboside [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3616313\/\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 55 diabetics, low doses of Brewer&#8217;s yeast (3.6 g daily for 8 weeks) reduced blood<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\"> triglycerides<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\"> LDL<\/a> while increasing beneficial HDL cholesterol [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22018047\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Higher doses of this supplement (10-20 g per day) achieved similar results in 46 subjects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7185858\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>That said, the above studies didn&#8217;t have placebo controls and used chromium-rich brewer&#8217;s yeast. <b>It&#8217;s not sure whether nutritional yeast without chromium would produce the same effects.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>B-glucans from S. cerevisiae cut cholesterol levels in 15 obese men and caused no side effects.
