Those who used the gel reported an improvement in [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15675889\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Forehead and eye area coarse wrinkles<\/li>\n<li>Lip shape and fullness<\/li>\n<li>Dark circles around the eyes<\/li>\n<li>Neck firmness<\/li>\n<li>Overall skin youthfulness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 30 volunteers, 3% DMAE gel increased facial skin firmness [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12236885\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A formulation with DMAE hydrated the skin and boosted <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-collagen\/\">collagen<\/a> production in human subjects and mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20095140\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Mesotherapy (skin injections with tiny needles) with DMAE and amino acids increased the levels of collagen and had notable anti-aging effects in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4123624\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to studies on cell cultures and rabbits\u2019 skin, the anti-aging effects of DMAE partly stem from cell damage and skin swelling, which might be a safety concern (more details in \u201c<b>Side Effects<\/b>&#8221; below) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17300230\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17940822\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence\">Insufficient Evidence:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i>No valid clinical evidence supports the use of DMAE for any of the conditions in this section. Below is a summary of up-to-date animal studies, cell-based research, or low-quality clinical trials which should spark further investigation. However, you shouldn\u2019t interpret them as supportive of any health benefit.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Memory_and_Cognition_Enhancement\"><b>2) Memory and Cognition Enhancement<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial of 60 patients with mild mental disorders, Deanol (DMAE) improved cognition, strength, and energy levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29053118\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A special formulation, <i>DMAE pyroglutamate<\/i> (1,500 mg\/day for 6 days), reversed short-term cognitive impairment in 24 healthy men. Tests on rats revealed the same [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19756528\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Pyroglutamate itself may boost acetylcholine levels and cognition, and it likely contributed to the results. Also, the study on human subjects lacked a control group.<\/p>\n<p><i>Centrophenoxine<\/i>, with DMAE as an active component, boosted long-term memory and increased alertness in 60 healthy older subjects. The same drug improved memory in 50 elderly patients with dementia [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/329662\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2506844\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, DMAE <b>failed to enhance cognition<\/b> in studies on older people with mild memory loss and Alzheimer\u2019s disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22330824\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7020434\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/120549\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/864168\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">DMAE may have the potential to boost cognition and mental clarity, but clinical evidence is conflicting. Well-designed studies should investigate this further.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Mental_Health\"><b>3) Mental Health<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A supplement with DMAE, vitamins, and minerals improved mood, energy, and wellbeing in a trial of 80 healthy subjects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12844472\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In 14 senile patients, DMAE (1,800 mg daily for 4 weeks) reduced the signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>, and irritability but didn\u2019t benefit cognition. The lack of placebo control and tiny sample prevent us from drawing any conclusion from this study [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/864168\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Centrophenoxine, which contains DMAE, reduced anxiety in rats exposed to<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/63-factors-raising-stress-cortisol-level-backed-science\/\"> stress<\/a>. In another study on rats, researchers observed its ability to increase the brain levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dopamine\/\">dopamine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-serotonin\">serotonin<\/a>, which are essential for good mental health [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2896427\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2105261\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>On the other hand, DMAE caused unpleasant side effects and worsened mental health in sensitive individuals. Caution is warranted until we know more about its mental health effects <\/b>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/111283\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/117492\">R<\/a>]<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Attention_Disorders\"><b>4) Attention Disorders<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some users claim that DMAE helps with ADHD and other attention disorders, but the evidence for this is scarce.<\/p>\n<p>Three-month treatment with Deanol (DMAE, 500 mg) improved school performance in 74 children with behavior and learning disorders. However, the study had significant drawbacks such as [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1092513\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small and uneven sample<\/li>\n<li>Questionable subject selection<\/li>\n<li>Poor symptom measurement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Likely_Ineffective\">Likely Ineffective:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Alzheimers_Disease\"><b>1) Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>DMAE provided <b>no significant improvement <\/b>in two studies with over 260<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alzheimer\/\"> Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a> patients. Some of them even had to quit due to major side effects (more details in \u201c<b>DMAE Side Effects<\/b>\u201d below) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22330824\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7020434\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Movement_Disorders\"><b>2) Movement Disorders<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s no evidence to back up the anecdotal benefits of DMAE for movement disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical trials have found no significant improvement of tardive dyskinesia, chorea, and other movement disorders [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/117492\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/145212\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/360761\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC493240\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"DMAE_Side_Effects\"><b>DMAE Side Effects<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i>This list does not cover all possible side effects. In Canada, you may report side effects to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>DMAE is possibly safe for oral and topical application when used in appropriate amounts in healthy people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1092513\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19756528\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15675889\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, oral application may cause significant side effects on mental health in susceptible individuals. According to some case reports, higher doses of DMAE may cause <b>insomnia, muscle cramps, and twitches<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/toxnet.nlm.nih.gov\/cgi-bin\/sis\/search\/a?dbs+hsdb:@term+@DOCNO+1329\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1756771\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Mental_Health_and_Cognition\"><b>Mental Health and Cognition<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>DMAE worsened the symptoms of <b>depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia<\/b> in some patients with mental disorders [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/111283\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/117492\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one clinical trial with Alzheimer\u2019s disease patients, 6 out of 13 subjects had to quit due to <b>drowsiness and cognitive disturbance<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7020434\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Pregnancy\"><b>Pregnancy<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Pregnant women should avoid DMAE because it may cause birth defects<\/b>. It impaired choline metabolism in mouse embryos, which led to birth defects and growth retardation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11919173\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11460263\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Skin\"><b>Skin<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Skin application of gels and creams with DMAE didn\u2019t cause irritation or other side effects in clinical studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15675889\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20095140\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, 3% DMAE gel caused <b>swelling<\/b> of the rabbit\u2019s ear skin, suggesting cell injury. In another study, higher DMAE concentrations (up to 10%) inhibited the growth of human skin cells and even <b>shortened their life span<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17300230\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17940822\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Given the above results, you may want to go slow with DMAE for your skin and avoid concentrated serums.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Drug_Interactions\"><b>Drug Interactions<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i>Supplement-drug interactions can be dangerous and, in rare cases, even life-threatening. Always consult your doctor before supplementing and let him know about all drugs and supplements you are using or considering.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>DMAE may increase the levels of acetylcholine and interfere with its brain transport. Hence, it may interact with two major drug classes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/727735\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cholinergics<\/b>, used mainly for Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li><b>Anticholinergics<\/b>, used for Parkinson\u2019s disease, COPD, and overactive bladder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"DMAE_Supplements_Dosage\"><b>DMAE Supplements &amp; Dosage<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i>DMAE supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use. In general, regulatory bodies aren\u2019t assuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of supplements. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Capsulated DMAE bitartrate <\/b>(130 &#8211; 250 mg pure DMAE) is the most popular supplement type, followed by bulk powders.<\/p>\n<p>For those aiming at skincare, different <b>DMAE creams and anti-age serums<\/b> are available.
