Could common foods like dairy, wheat, eggs, and beans be responsible? And how do the experts think these sensitivities could work?<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Food_Sensitivity_What_is_Food_Intolerance\"><b>What is Food Sensitivity? What is Food Intolerance?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Food sensitivity and food intolerance are two very closely-related, but possibly distinct terms. They both describe non-allergic, bothersome reactions to food triggers.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers generally seem to use \u201cfood intolerance\u201d to describe non-immunologic reactions: for example, lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme lactase. \u201cFood sensitivity\u201d is a nonspecific catch-all term used to describe a food reaction that is neither an allergy or intolerance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3314037\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>However, the distinction between intolerance and sensitivity is not clear.<\/b> According to the logic of the researchers cited above, food sensitivity must include all non-allergic immune responses to food. However, it has also been used to describe diseases that involve an allergic reaction by definition (such as eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3314037\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3389712\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Food sensitivity and food intolerance may have so much overlap that they may describe a distinction without a difference. <b>For the purposes of this article, we will use the terms interchangeably.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Food_Sensitivity_Symptoms\"><b>Food Sensitivity Symptoms<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You may have already read a lot about inflammation and its complications. The best-known inflammatory condition is arthritis, but inflammation can be much less obvious than that. Here are the main symptoms food sensitivity can cause by raising inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>If you have one or more of these symptoms and doctors haven\u2019t been able to figure out why, <b>you might want to ask if food sensitivity is a possible cause.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Digestive_Problems\"><b>Digestive Problems<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some researchers, digestive problems are among the most common symptoms of chronic inflammation from food sensitivity. The most common ones include <b>bloating, nausea, diarrhea, and flatulence<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2570116\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28592442\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Brain_Fog\"><b>Brain Fog<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-cause-of-brain-fog\/\">Brain fog<\/a>\u201d is what it sounds like: it describes a condition wherein mental function is slow and unclear, as if everything is happening through a fog. Brain fog reduces mental sharpness and clarity, learning, memory, and concentration [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4490655\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to some researchers, inflammation of the brain is the likely primary cause of brain fog. When inflammatory signals (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/histamine\/\">histamine<\/a> from mast cells) reach the brain, they activate the microglia, brain cells that act like<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-and-decrease-white-blood-cells\/\"> white blood cells<\/a>. Microglia activation has been associated with conditions like autism spectrum disorder [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4490655\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25941080\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3907532\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26797518\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Migraine_Headache\"><b>Migraine &amp; Headache<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Migraines and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">headaches<\/a> can have a huge variety of triggers &#8211; everything from lights, sounds, and smells to the weather &#8211; so it can be difficult to tell whether they might be caused by food sensitivity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3857910\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, about a quarter of people who get migraines believe that food is the cause. In one study, all 56 migraineurs had unusually high IgG against between 6 and 30 foods; only 26% of healthy controls had unusually high IgG against a maximum of 4 foods [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3857910\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Elimination diets based on these IgG results have had mixed results, however. In a study of 167 people, <b>eliminating foods based on IgG reduced the number of migraines over the first four weeks, but the number rose back to near baseline at 12 weeks<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3857910\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3199755\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one study of people who believed that red wine triggered their migraines, drinking red wine did in fact trigger a migraine within about 3 hours. However, it\u2019s difficult to create a placebo that looks, tastes, and smells like red wine, so the study could only compare wine with diluted vodka, serving them both <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/12-reasons-embrace-cold\/\">cold<\/a> and in dark bottles. Some of the observed effects may have been psychosomatic [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3857910\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2894493\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>A Connection with Histamine<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Recently, one research team discovered that <b>people who were prone to migraines had significantly lower than average levels of diamine oxidase (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/aoc1\/\"><b>DAO<\/b><\/a><b>), the enzyme that breaks down<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/deal-histamine\/\"> <b>histamine<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b> In their study, 87% of people with migraines were deficient in DAO, compared to 44% of people without migraines [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28624934\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This result suggests that <b>high histamine may cause or contribute to migraine headaches.<\/b> Foods that are high in histamine (preserved, cured, or fermented foods) or that increase histamine release could trigger migraines [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28624934\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Anxiety_Depression\"><b>Anxiety<\/b><b> &amp; Depression<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of brain problems, inflammation and microglia activation can trigger<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\"> anxiety<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\"> depression<\/a>. <b>Chronic inflammation decreases feelings of reward and<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/21-drugs-increase-motivation\/\"> <b>motivation<\/b><\/a><b> and increases sensitivity to perceived threats. <\/b>In this way, inflammation can also worsen the symptoms of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ptsd-causes-treatments\/\"> PTSD<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3907532\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5997866\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5143487\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26952745\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Poor_Sleep_Quality_Insomnia\"><b>Poor Sleep Quality &amp; Insomnia<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chronic inflammation is associated with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/methods-to-fall-asleep-insomniac\/\"> insomnia<\/a> and shortened<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\"> sleep<\/a> duration, though its effect on sleep quality is less clear. It\u2019s difficult to say whether inflammation causes poor sleep or vice versa. Currently, all we can say is that <b>people (and especially teenagers) with insomnia have more inflammation than people who get a healthy amount of sleep<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4629050\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4927381\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5316336\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Respiratory_Symptoms\"><b>Respiratory Symptoms<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inflammation in the respiratory system causes symptoms like a <b>runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, and difficulty breathing.<\/b> Histamine is directly responsible for nasal congestion, so people with an inability to break down histamine could experience this symptom more than most [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30306206\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2866558\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some researchers believe that foods (fish, milk, eggs, and others) may contribute to <b>asthma and other inflammatory symptoms of the airway.<\/b> However, the relationship between food intolerance and asthma is not fully understood, and other researchers don\u2019t buy into it [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5422552\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Sensitivity to salicylates has been tentatively linked to the development of <b>nasal polyps<\/b> (abnormal tissue growth in the lining of the nose) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28341821\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Skin_Conditions\"><b>Skin Conditions<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Atopic dermatitis (eczema), rashes, and other symptoms of skin inflammation are common in food allergy and intolerance. In non-allergic reactions, skin inflammation can develop as late as 2-6 days after a sensitive person eats a trigger food [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5122280\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21575008\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The most common food triggers for skin symptoms are milk (beta-casein) and egg whites (ovomucoid and ovalbumin) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5122280\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21575008\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3069662\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Possible_Consequences_of_Food_Sensitivity\"><b>Possible Consequences of Food Sensitivity<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At least one clinical trial has linked symptoms of food sensitivity to the complications or conditions in this section, but this is by no means an exhaustive list, and many people may react differently to foods and never develop these complications. In order to accurately assess your likelihood of developing neurodegenerative disease, cancer, and heart disease, talk to your doctor about your health status and risk factors.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Neurodegeneration\"><b>Neurodegeneration<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Microglia activation may also drive neurodegeneration, as in the case of Alzheimer\u2019s disease. One of the primary features of Alzheimer\u2019s is the dysfunction of a protein called tau, which forms \u201ctangles\u201d inside neurons. <b>According to some researchers, microglia activation &#8211; and, thus, inflammation in the brain &#8211; may be a driving force behind tau tangles<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5218993\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27716676\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer\"><b>Cancer<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Like neurodegeneration, cancer isn\u2019t a symptom to watch out for but rather a potential consequence of unmanaged inflammation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Chronic inflammation and<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> <b>oxidative stress<\/b><\/a><b> can damage DNA and prevent DNA repair.<\/b> This can result in mutations, some of which can turn cells cancerous. Over a long enough period of time, inflammation can thereby directly cause cancer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6195709\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4300235\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>According to some researchers, as many as a quarter of all cancers could be caused by inflammation and its complications<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6195709\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4300235\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Heart_Disease\"><b>Heart Disease<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inflammation and heart diseases have been connected for a long time. <b>Inflammation and oxidative stress can damage the heart and blood vessels<\/b>, opening the door for heart attack, coronary heart disease, and other serious health problems [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29858969\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6146930\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5986484\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have long believed that high <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a> causes heart disease. In the last year or so, <b>some researchers have suggested that inflammation actually causes the problems attributed to cholesterol.<\/b> However, cholesterol status contributes to inflammation, making this a potential \u201cchicken and egg\u201d situation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5986484\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Dietary_Offenders\"><b>Potential Dietary Offenders<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Food sensitivity is relatively poorly understood, and many questions have yet to be answered. Some food components and additives have been observed to produce reactions in sensitive people, but the mechanisms for these reactions is often purely speculative. If you suspect that you are sensitive to a particular food or dietary component, talk to your doctor or dietitian about available tests and management strategies.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Lectins\"><b>1) Lectins<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As Joe\u2019s particular interests, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/are-you-lectin-sensitive-using-genes-symptoms-and-blood-tests\/\">lectin sensitivity<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/elimination-diet-safest-foods-people-sensitive-everything\/\"> lectin avoidance<\/a> have been heavily documented and discussed here at SelfDecode.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lectins-beneficial-harmful\/\"><b>Lectins<\/b><\/a><b> are a type of protein found in especially high amounts in legumes and whole grains<\/b> (especially wheat). Some people don\u2019t have enough of the lactase enzyme to break down lactose (milk sugar). Others are allergic to cow\u2019s milk; they produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) against cow\u2019s milk antigens and develop digestive, respiratory, skin, or anaphylactic symptoms [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/digestive-diseases\/lactose-intolerance\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21575008\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, even with lactase and without allergy, some research suggests that cow\u2019s milk may still cause problems. <b>People with cow\u2019s milk protein intolerance (CMPI) develop digestive or skin problems between 1 hour and several days after consuming milk.<\/b> They do not have high IgE, IgG, or IgA against cow\u2019s milk, and classic skin prick allergy tests come back negative [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21575008\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>CMPI typically causes <b>nausea, bloating, diarrhea, and skin rashes.<\/b> Some researchers suspect that <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">-mediated inflammation<\/a> is responsible for the reaction [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21575008\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>Casein<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The problem protein in CMPI is believed to be <b>\u03b2-casein (beta-casein)<\/b>, which accounts for about 30% of all of the protein in cow\u2019s milk [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4586534\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5657040\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>European and American dairy cows produce one of two variants of \u03b2-casein, called A1 and A2. <b>A2 is the ancestral type; A1 is believed to have emerged between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago<\/b> in European herds [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4586534\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5657040\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A1 is the result of a single point mutation (SNP) that changed one amino acid from proline to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/histidine\/\">histidine<\/a>. According to multiple studies, <b>many people with cow\u2019s milk protein intolerance appear to react more strongly to A1 \u03b2-casein than to A2 \u03b2-casein. <\/b>In one study, drinking milk that only contains the A2 protein completely resolved symptoms in some participants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4586534\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5657040\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4818854\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some dairy farms have undergone testing and breeding programs to phase out cows that produce A1 \u03b2-casein from their herds. You can find A2 milk (and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ghee-vs-coconut-oil\/\">ghee<\/a>) at many grocery chains and health food stores.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Soy\"><b>3) Soy<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Multiple soy proteins can produce reactions in people who are sensitive to them. In many cases, this results in a soy allergy; however, <b>soybeans also contain lectins<\/b>, which some researchers believe may cause or exacerbate inflammatory conditions in sensitive people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15113974\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5486065\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1115436\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5359455\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to one study, soy isoflavone intake is <b>associated with Kawasaki disease<\/b>, an inflammatory blood vessel disorder that is suspected to be autoimmune. Soy extracts have also triggered autoimmune antigen production in a cell study [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4987172\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23918874\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of mice with autoimmune disease, soy proteins considerably worsened kidney function compared to casein. Together, these results suggest a connection between soy and autoimmunity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16039550\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Eggs\"><b>4) Eggs<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Egg allergies are relatively common, especially in children, and can be very severe. Children usually develop reactions to ovalbumin, ovomucoid protein, or both; the allergy often fades with age [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3069662\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S168411821400005X?via%3Dihub\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Egg protein intolerance is not as well documented.
