Read on to learn what mTOR is, what it does, and how it can be influenced by your diet &amp; lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_mTOR\"><b>What Is mTOR?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>mTOR is a protein that responds to signals from nutrients, growth factors, and cellular energy status and controls cell growth and proliferation based on this (by regulating protein synthesis).<\/p>\n<p>In more simple English, <b>whenever we have lots of nutrition <\/b>(<b>mainly protein<\/b>)<b> and calories, we essentially tell the body that plentiful times are here<\/b>. mTOR is the protein that &#8220;senses&#8221; this, and signals our cells to increase their working capacity and ATP (energy) production. Cells also divide and reproduce faster, which primes the body for rapid growth and repair.<\/p>\n<p>However, in times of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/63-factors-raising-stress-cortisol-level-backed-science\/\">stress<\/a> such as reduced caloric or nutrient intake, mTOR activity decreases (is inhibited) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2980558\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to realize that <b>mTOR can increase performance<\/b> and we shouldn&#8217;t view it as either good or bad. It more like depends.<\/p>\n<p><b>mTOR is one of those things that\u2019s good to have cycled<\/b>. Sometimes we want to increase it to grow muscle and improve certain aspects of cognition, while the rest of the time want to have low levels to increase <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lifestyle-diet-increase-longevity\/\">longevity<\/a>, decrease cancer risk, and reduce inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>You see, <b>mTOR increases energy production<\/b>,<b> but also creates more junk products<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/autophagy-benefits-and-how-to-harness\/\">Autophagy<\/a> is the process that degrades these junk products. But it is only usually active when mTOR is decreased. In other words, the body doesn\u2019t start cleaning up until the party is over.<\/p>\n<p><b>Autophagy is equivalent to a &#8216;detox&#8217;<\/b> from a scientific perspective. We need a balance between growth\/junk products and rest\/clean up.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Functions\"><b>Functions<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>mTOR forms two functional complexes, C1 and C2. The C1 complex is generally considered the more significant of the two when it comes to health and disease.<\/p>\n<p>mTOR activation allows us to <b>put on more muscle<\/b> (and fat) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0092867412003510\">R<\/a>) and increase various hormones such as<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-truth-about-igf-1-top-10-benefits-and-potential-drawbacks\/\"> IGF-1<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2980558\/\">R<\/a>). If you are overly muscular, you may have overactive mTOR (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PI3K\/AKT\/mTOR_pathway\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This makes evolutionary sense. When we had food, it was a good idea to increase muscle and fat and when we didn\u2019t, it made sense to turn our systems down in order to conserve energy.<\/p>\n<p>In rats, mTOR activation in the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hypothalamus-101\/\"> hypothalamus<\/a> has been shown to <b>decrease food intake and body<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\"> <b>weight<\/b><\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-leptin-its-role-in-chronic-inflammation-cfs-and-weight\/\">Leptin<\/a> causes satiety by this mechanism (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16690869\">R<\/a>).<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/npy\/\"> NPY<\/a> (increases <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-10-ways-to-curb-your-hunger-and-approaches-that-didnt-work\/\">hunger<\/a>) is increased when mTOR is inhibited, which also suggest activating mTOR will inhibit appetite (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19818818\">R<\/a>). Confusingly, another more recent study says that<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ghrelin-role-cognitive-gut-function-weight-inflammation-autoimmunity\/\"> ghrelin<\/a> causes activation of hypothalamic mTOR and inhibiting mTOR inhibited hunger (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3467268\/\">R<\/a>). Maybe low or high mTOR inhibits hunger?<\/p>\n<p><b>mTOR increases ATP production and creates new <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/mitochondria\/\"><b>mitochondria<\/b><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0092867412003510\">R<\/a>). It also increases <b>mitochondrial metabolism<\/b> (by activating <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/about-pgc-1alpha-and-natural-ways-to-increase-it\/\">PGC1a<\/a>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cellsignal.com\/common\/content\/content.jsp?id=pathways-mtor-signaling\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>mTOR is involved in various forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/synaptic-plasticity\/\"><b>synaptic plasticity<\/b><\/a><b> and memory consolidation<\/b>. mTOR blocked the reconsolidation of an established fear memory in a lasting manner in mice, suggesting that its inhibition may be helpful in people with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ptsd-causes-treatments\/\">PTSD<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18316213\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, overactivation of mTOR also seems to cause defects in plasticity and memory (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/scientifica\/2013\/849186\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Why_Its_Bad\"><b>Why It&#8217;s Bad<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Too much mTOR activation is associated with a large number of human diseases,<b> including cancer<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\"><b>obesity<\/b><\/a>,<b> acne,<\/b> <b>type 2 diabetes<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\"><b>depression<\/b><\/a>,<b> and neurodegeneration<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0092867412003510\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22870349\">R<\/a>).<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>mTOR is<b> associated with cancer and indeed, it increases angiogenesis<\/b> (via <a href=\"http:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/hif1a\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">HIF-1a<\/a>), a process through which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels, helping tumors grow (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cellsignal.com\/common\/content\/content.jsp?id=pathways-mtor-signaling\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Increased mTOR <b>promotes<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\"><b>Th1<\/b><\/a> <b>and<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\"><b>Th17<\/b><\/a><b> immunity<\/b>, possibly leading to increased intestinal inflammation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jci.org\/articles\/view\/73202\">R<\/a>), among other issues. It increases Th17 cells by increasing another protein called <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-you-may-be-suffering-from-low-oxygen-and-not-realize-it\/\">hypoxia<\/a>-induced factor (HIF)-1\u03b1 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3928092\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A reduction in mTOR improved <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin sensitivity<\/a> in muscle cells, possibly by increasing the process of breaking down sugar (glycolysis) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22281494\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/Journal\/10.3389\/fimmu.2014.00590\/full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>When T cells (CD4 and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/homing-fundamenal-cause-epstein-barr-reactivation\/#Top_Supplements_to_Increase_CD8_T_Cells\">CD8<\/a>) are stimulated, they rapidly reproduce (<a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/Journal\/10.3389\/fimmu.2014.00590\/full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The rapid <b>production of T Cells requires energy<\/b>. Activation of <b>mTOR allows the T Cells to rapidly expand by shifting how they get energy<\/b>. Instead of getting energy from the mitochondria (via oxidative phosphorylation), they get it primarily from breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a> down (glycolysis) (<a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/Journal\/10.3389\/fimmu.2014.00590\/full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>When you prevent this process of glucose breakdown, T cells realize that they don\u2019t have what it takes to rapidly expand and fight pathogens. So instead, they turn into <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/treg\/\">Treg cells<\/a>, which dials the immune system down (<a href=\"http:\/\/journal.frontiersin.org\/Journal\/10.3389\/fimmu.2014.00590\/full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><b>Diseases Associated With mTOR Activation<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The following conditions are commonly associated with mTOR overactivation. It\u2019s important to note that this doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that everyone with overactive mTOR will actually develop them!
