More than 350 different species of <em>Diospyros<\/em> exist [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0753332216328864\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The most commonly grown species in both Asia and the US is <strong><em>Diospyros kaki<\/em><\/strong>, also known as Japanese or Oriental persimmon. A less widespread variety is <em>Diospyros virginiana<\/em>, also known as North American or common persimmon [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0753332216328864\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agmrc.org\/commodities-products\/fruits\/persimmon\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Tea made from persimmon leaves has been a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine at least since the Ming Dynasty. Persimmon fruits, bark, and roots are cherished remedies in folk medicine. Their use spans high blood pressure, clogged arteries (atherosclerosis), stroke, and constipation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S037887411500015X\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Varieties\"><a id=\"post-67736-_a0jfiheaa81q\"><\/a><strong>Varieties<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Persimmon comes in two types, <strong>astringent and non-astringent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Astringent persimmon has a bitter taste when not fully ripe. It can only be eaten after becoming completely soft. Both the skin and fruit abound in carotenoids, which give persimmons their characteristic rich orange color. These include lutein,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/astaxanthin\/\"> astaxanthin<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/beta-carotene\/\"> beta-carotene<\/a> and beta-cryptoxanthin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/jchem\/2016\/3424025\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rodent studies, beta-cryptoxanthin from persimmon <strong>reversed fatty liver disease. <\/strong>It also<strong> reduced inflammation and<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><strong> insulin<\/strong><\/a><strong> resistance<\/strong>. In a recent study, these molecules extended the lifespan and prevented memory impairment in rapidly aging mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24858102\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/15-science-based-health-benefits-fisetin-1-favorite\/\">Fisetin<\/a> is another powerful flavonoid phenol found in persimmons. Regulations set manufacturing standards for supplements but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-67736-_p520kcx7xs66\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of persimmon for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking persimmon extracts, and never use them in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-67736-_4q06uc2vm0py\"><\/a>1) Obesity<\/h4>\n<p>In a Korean pilot trial of 20 obese people, persimmon <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefit-of-vinegar\/\">vinegar<\/a> (with or without<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/scientifically-proven-health-benefits-of-ginger\/\"> ginger<\/a>) <strong>reduced inflammatory markers, body weight, and fat<\/strong> after 6 weeks [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4424440\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obesity and inflammation conspire together in a vicious spiral<\/strong>. Inflammation leads to problems such as insulin- and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-root-causes-of-leptin-resistance-and-12-ways-to-reverse-it\/\"> leptin resistance<\/a>, which increases fat gain. In cell- and rodent studies, phenols from persimmon decreased various inflammatory compounds (nitric oxide,<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\"> TNF-\u03b1<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\"> IL-1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/prostaglandins\/\"> prostaglandin<\/a> E\u2082, and<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cox2-natural-cox2-inhibitors\/\"> COX-2<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/1750-3841.13497\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1420-3049\/21\/9\/1206\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1567576913002956\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Pancreatic<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lipase-test\/\"> lipase<\/a> is an enzyme that breaks down and helps absorb dietary fats. In test tubes, tannins from persimmon skin bound to<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lipase-test\/\"> pancreatic lipase<\/a>, making it less available to aid fat absorption. In mice, persimmon fruit and citrus peel had a similar effect [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.jafc.8b00850\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/bmri\/2016\/1723042\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, persimmon leaf extract reduced weight gain, liver and belly fat gain in obese mice on a<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-carb-diet-vs-high-carb-diet\/\"> high-fat diet<\/a>. It also reduced<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\"> triglycerides<\/a>, total cholesterol,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\"> LDL<\/a>, blood sugar, insulin and leptin levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spandidos-publications.com\/ijmm\/43\/1\/603\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-67736-_10fqbrxcey10\"><\/a>2) Cholesterol<\/h4>\n<p>In a clinical trial of 66 people, persimmon extract in combination with statins lowered blood fat levels to a greater degree than statins alone [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18589766\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another clinical trial of 40 people divided, 5 g\/day of persimmon fibers <strong>greatly reduced bad (LDL) cholesterol<\/strong>, while 3 grams had a much milder effect [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23171573\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Numerous animal studies attest to its ability to lower LDL. Some researchers believe that [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17142997\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/jchem\/2016\/3424025\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/Content\/ArticleLanding\/2011\/FO\/c1fo10066\"> R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Its highly concentrated antioxidants reduce LDL damage (carotenoids and proanthocyanidins)<\/li>\n<li>Its fibers bind fats in the gut<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><a id=\"post-67736-_swpxja5gdi04\"><\/a>3) Gut Health<\/h4>\n<p>Persimmon is high in <strong>dietary fiber<\/strong>, which supports gut health in several ways [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4291444\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It increases the bulk of the stool, speeding up food transit<\/li>\n<li>It feeds the good<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gut-bacteria-microbiome\/\"> gut bacteria<\/a>, which go on to produce beneficial short-chain fatty acids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tannins in persimmon also help rebalance the gut microbiota when given in moderation. In rats, they increased the good gut bacteria (<em>Bifidobacterium<\/em> spp. and <em>Lactobacillus<\/em> spp.), while killing the bad gut bacteria (like <em>E. Coli<\/em>). However, only low to moderate doses were beneficial. High doses affected the microbiota negatively [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/Content\/ArticleLanding\/2018\/FO\/C7FO00995J\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-67736-_64pumeatqjo6\"><\/a>4) Blood Sugar<\/h4>\n<p>The way <strong>persimmon leaves<\/strong> appear to lower blood sugar has long remained a mystery, despite their millennia-long use in traditional medicine. In a recent clinical trial of 68 prediabetic people, scientists discovered that persimmon leaf extract can positively affect complex protein signatures in the body. According to the authors of the study, this means that persimmons may affect gene expression to help prevent diabetes and high blood sugar [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5547216\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to animal studies, these fruits may limit the activity of genes that lead to fat accumulation. In diabetic mice, persimmons prevented fat build-up in the liver and improved blood sugar control. And in another rodent study, proanthocyanidins from persimmon also lowered blood sugar [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3493507\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17939733\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other research suggests that persimmons might prevent blood sugar spikes after a meal by lowering<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/amylase\/\"> amylase<\/a> enzymes that break down complex sugars. In animals, persimmon limited the digestion of starch and reduced the uptake<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\"> of glucose<\/a> into the bloodstream [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.jafc.7b05833\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/jnsv\/62\/3\/62_192\/_article\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spandidos-publications.com\/mmr\/12\/2\/2547\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1271\/bbb.100056\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-67736-_5z3inaguptix\"><\/a>Animal Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of persimmon for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-67736-_ej3r7898aa81\"><\/a>5) Heart Health<\/h4>\n<p>Atherosclerosis is the buildup of plaque inside the arteries. According to some researchers, the antioxidants in persimmon may slow atherosclerosis by lowering inflammation and oxidative damage to the bad (LDL) cholesterol [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/jchem\/2016\/3424025\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0899900710002947\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the leaves of Japanese persimmon are used in Japan to reduce blood pressure. Flavonoids from the leaves can lower the activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), similar to several blood-pressure-lowering drugs [<a href=\"https:\/\/www-sciencedirect-com.ludwig.lub.lu.se\/science\/article\/pii\/S0753332216328864\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rats, the flavonoids from persimmon leaf extract lowered blood pressure (by increasing eNOS and cGMP) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1271\/bbb.100926\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, persimmon may protect heart cells against<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-you-may-be-suffering-from-low-oxygen-and-not-realize-it\/\"> hypoxia<\/a> or the lack of oxygen, according to research on rat cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12865219\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-67736-_gf5xry1cniaw\"><\/a>6) Brain Health<\/h4>\n<h5><a id=\"post-67736-_ogjyzpb24m1w\"><\/a>Cognition &amp; Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/h5>\n<p>Persimmon leaf extract improved cognitive function in rats with Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Its flavonoids and triterpenoids likely carry this effect since they can increase key antioxidants in brain cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0944711316300241\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another study highlights its brain-protective effect: persimmon leaf extract limited brain cell injury and death caused by free radicals. It boosted antioxidants inside cells, including<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\"> glutathione<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/catalase-benefits\/\"> catalase<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304394004003969\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Plus, the extract reversed learning and memory impairment in mice.
