Read on to learn more about the potential benefits of Chinese yam.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Chinese_Yam\">What Is Chinese Yam?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chinese yam is a climbing vine native to China that is currently widespread throughout East Asia. Although this herb has medical advantages, it also carries major drawbacks for the environment; it can quickly invade habitats and may reduce plant diversity. It was brought to the United States in the 1800s and has spread across the country since [<a href=\"https:\/\/mdc.mo.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/downloads\/ChineseYam.pdf\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>Chinese yam root <\/b>(<b>which may also be called a tuber or rhizome<\/b>)<b> was traditionally combined with other herbs to manage diabetes<\/b>,<b> improve women\u2019s reproductive health<\/b>,<b> and support digestive health <\/b>[<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1753-0407.2011.00130.x\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12956293\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352939317300829\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>People in China eat the roots as a mild tonic food, along with other yams. Japanese people call it \u201c<b>nagaimo<\/b>,\u201d which translates to \u201clong yam\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5155516\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3549954\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners claim that Chinese yam can restore the vital energy, called qi. According to them, Chinese yam increases yin, which is often linked to feminine qualities. It is considered to stimulate the spleen, lungs, and kidneys.<\/p>\n<p>The official scientific name of Chinese yam is <i>Dioscorea polystachya<\/i>. However, some sources report it as <i>D. opposita<\/i> or even <i>D. villosa<\/i>, the latter of which is a different species called wild yam. In 100g of Chinese yam, you can expect anywhere from <b>40 <\/b>&#8211;<b> 65 calories<\/b>, mostly depending on their water content [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabdirect.org\/cabdirect\/abstract\/20093205580\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S030881460500587X\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4190238\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Chinese yams are a source of vitamins<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/thiamine\/\"> B1<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-vitamin-c-32-science-based-health-benefits\/\"> C<\/a>. You can chop up the roots and stir-fry or saute with your spices of choice in just a couple of minutes. Plus, you can substitute it in many recipes that use other types of yams and sweet potatoes. Unlike other yams, Chinese yam is not very sweet.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Active_Compounds\">Active Compounds<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>Diosgenin and DOI<\/h4>\n<p>Diosgenin is a phytoestrogen: a plant steroid that acts like an estrogen. Most members of the yam family produce diosgenin, including the Chinese yam [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27119728\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a lab setting, diosgenin binds to estrogen receptors and activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ppargamma-role-weight-gain-inflammation-natural-activators\/\">PPAR\u03b3<\/a>). PPAR\u03b3 increases fat deposits, but also increases<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\"> insulin sensitivity<\/a> and suppresses cancer growth [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27119728\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308814611015950\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26253490\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24001619\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28677503\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20216208\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>DOI is an estrogen-stimulating protein recently discovered in Chinese yam. It is being researched as a safer, natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women. In rats, DOI increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\">estradiol<\/a> and progesterone levels, prevented bone loss, and enhanced cognition [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5155516\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Does Chinese Yam Contain Progesterone?<\/h4>\n<p>Although the active compounds in Chinese yam may increase<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-21-science-based-health-benefits-progesterone-4-drawbacks\/\"> progesterone<\/a> levels under some circumstances, the herb does not actually contain progesterone. Diosgenin is used to make progesterone in the lab since it is chemically similar to sex hormones. However, the body cannot convert it into progesterone [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3414290\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Polysaccharides<\/h4>\n<p>Some of the sugars in Chinese yam come in the form of polysaccharides: multiple sugar units connected together with chemical bonds. Some of the polysaccharides from Chinese yam <b>reduce blood sugar<\/b>, while others are <b>strong antioxidants<\/b>. Chinese yam is also rich in mucilage, a gooey polysaccharide that makes a gel when mixed with water [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28906544\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0141813014000841\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29287353\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Others<\/h4>\n<p>Chinese yam contains other active compounds like allantoin, an <b>antioxidant that promotes wound healing<\/b>, and several antioxidant flavonoids and phenolics [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4190238\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27122252\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>Raw Chinese yam is also high in resistant starch<\/b>, which increases <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-butyrate-derivatives-sodium-butyrate-phenylbutyrate-trybutyrine-butyric-acid-butyrate-prodrugs-butyrate-producing-bacteria\/\">butyrate<\/a> in the gut and supports your digestive health [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22293211\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Benefits_with_Insufficient_Evidence\">Potential Benefits with Insufficient Evidence<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At least one clinical trial has found that Chinese yam could benefit cognition, but this was a very small study which has not been repeated. While Chinese yam is safe to consume as food, it has not been approved by the FDA for any medical purpose or health claim. Talk to your doctor about better-studied alternatives for your health goals.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Cognition\">1) Cognition<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a study of 28 healthy adults, a diosgenin-rich yam extract <b>improved markers of cognitive function and memory<\/b>, without producing side effects. Diosgenin also repaired brain function in a mouse model of Alzheimer\u2019s disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5691776\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lacking_Evidence\">Animal Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of Chinese yam for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Womens_Reproductive_Health\">2) Women\u2019s Reproductive Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Out of 600 species in its plant family, Chinese yam is by far the most commonly used in traditional medicine for enhancing women\u2019s reproductive health &#8211; from increasing fertility to reducing menstrual and menopausal symptoms. Only a subset of the traditional claims has been tested [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5155516\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>After menopause and as ovulation ceases, progesterone and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\">estrogen<\/a> levels drop. Although both synthetic and bioidentical hormones are therapeutic options that aim to compensate for the drop in sex hormones, neither is ideal [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK29\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Chinese yam contains multiple compounds that can mimic female sex hormones. These compounds (including diosgenin, DOI,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/adenosine-health-effects\/\"> adenosine<\/a>, and arbutin) are currently under investigation for their potential against [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26253490\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6017084\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00253-012-4675-y\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5155516\/\"> R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Osteoporosis<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive problems<\/li>\n<li>Other symptoms of menopause<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chinese yam may increase progesterone and estrogen levels, according to studies in menopausal rats. In lab settings, it also activated the enzyme aromatase, which makes estrogen. In rodents, it increases the response to the pituitary\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/follicle-stimulating-hormone\/\">FSH<\/a>, which along with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/luteinizing-hormone\/\"> LH<\/a> orchestrates the activity of female sex hormones in the body [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK29\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5155516\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one remarkable case study, a traditional tonic including Chinese yam,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/rehmannia\/\"> rehmannia<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/icariin\/\"> epimedium<\/a>, and other herbs, may have restored fertility in a woman with ovarian failure. <b>However, this was only a single case which has not been repeated in clinical settings. It should not be used as grounds to take Chinese yam for fertility<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0141813014000841\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12956293\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Digestive_Health\">3) Digestive Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to animal and cell studies, Chinese yam and its extracts may promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the digestive system. Eating Chinese yam increased beneficial <i>Lactobacillus<\/i> bacteria, blocked the ulcer-causing <i>E. coli<\/i>, and decreased gut inflammation in mice and rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2777007\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26434311\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16756078\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25498730\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19343624\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Blood_Sugar\">4) Blood Sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In animals, polysaccharides from Chinese yam decreased blood sugar. Meanwhile, diosgenin increased insulin sensitivity (by binding to <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ppargamma-role-weight-gain-inflammation-natural-activators\/\">PPAR gamma<\/a>). Chinese yam may be a good functional food for diabetes or prediabetes, but these benefits have not been investigated in humans [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28906544\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24001619\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Immunity\">5) Immunity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In mice, diosgenin and mucilage from Chinese yam increased the activity of the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/primer-immune-system-works-videosimages\/\"> immune system<\/a> and improved the animals\u2019 ability to fight infections that they had encountered before, such as the inactive viruses in vaccines [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17566144\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2882594\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19343624\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Mucilage from yam increased several indicators of immune function in animals, including [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2882594\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>T and B cell production (two types of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-and-decrease-white-blood-cells\/\">white blood cell<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Spleen and other immune organ cell production<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-alpha<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a> production from macrophages (another type of white blood cell)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of its immune-boosting effects in animals, Chinese yam increased inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha and<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\"> IL-6<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17566144\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2882594\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19343624\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Chinese yam may affect <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-foods-exercise-right-type-th1-vs-th2-dominance\/\">&#8211; and <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\">Th2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-foods-exercise-right-type-th1-vs-th2-dominance\/\">-dominant people<\/a> differently. In animals, diosgenin increased the Th1 response, which can help fight infections but becomes excessive in people with autoimmune issues [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19343624\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Skin_Health\">6) Skin Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Mucilage has traditionally been used to soften the skin and manage skin disorders. Mucilage from a variety of plant sources promotes wound healing and soothes rashes and burns. Chinese yam is rich in mucilage; if ground or grated and spread on the skin, it may help heal cuts, scrapes, and other conditions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27516674\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25017948\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23410108\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK92761\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Limitations_and_Caveats\">Limitations and Caveats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The research on Chinese yam suffers from considerable confusion about its proper scientific name.
