Read on to find out.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Rehmannia\"><a id=\"post-61661-_cxw5ypizl88y\"><\/a><strong>What is Rehmannia?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>Rehmannia glutinosa<\/em> is a flowering plant found in central China<\/strong>. It\u2019s sometimes called Chinese foxglove because it looks somewhat like a foxglove flower, though the two aren\u2019t actually related [<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF03030579\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The roots of this plant have been used in Traditional Chinese and Korean Medicine for over 2,000 years [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S037887410800069X?via%3Dihub\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874106000389\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to the traditional outlook, the harmony of opposite, but complementary, forces &#8211; yin and yang &#8211; underlies good health. <em>Rehmannia <\/em>is thought to help with yin energy imbalances. It is traditionally used to fight bacterial infections, as a tonic, and for a variety of conditions associated with inflammation, like asthma and arthritis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1420-3049\/18\/5\/5804\/htm\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0378-8741(08)00069-X\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF03030579\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Rehmannia <\/em>is also often combined with other herbs to remedy \u201cyin deficiency\u201d. For example, it\u2019s one of the six ingredients in a popular Chinese herbal product called Rehmannia Six Formula and one of the seven ingredients in the traditional kidney-nourishing herbal formulation Yukmi-jihang-tang. It is also included in widely-used formulations, such as Liuwei Dihuang Pills [<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1753-0407.2011.00130.x\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874106000389\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2016\/1509063\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Snapshot\"><a id=\"post-61661-_ogk9edux169p\"><\/a><strong>Snapshot<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_8wm3mm6kqkz0\"><\/a><strong>Proponents:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>May improve anemia by supporting blood cell production<\/li>\n<li>May support kidney function<\/li>\n<li>Early evidence of mood, blood sugar, and bone support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_h5956bzdy30f\"><\/a><strong>Skeptics:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Unclear which active components are responsible for the benefits<\/li>\n<li>Researched and often used in multi-herb formulations<\/li>\n<li>Weak or low-quality evidence for many benefits<\/li>\n<li>Side effects largely unknown<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Rehmannia_Root\"><a id=\"post-61661-_o3lkftetpk5g\"><\/a><strong>Rehmannia Root<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although the above-ground parts are sometimes used, herbal remedies are<strong> much more often prepared from the orange roots of this plant<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1420-3049\/18\/5\/5804\/htm#B13-molecules-18-05804\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/cpb\/59\/5\/59_5_546\/_article\/-char\/ja\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Depending on how the roots are prepared, they are called [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4649102\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Xian-Di-Huang (for the fresh root)<\/li>\n<li>Sheng-Di-Huang (for baked roots)<\/li>\n<li>Shu-Di-Huang (for steamed roots) in Chinese<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Components\"><a id=\"post-61661-_7au31jpj2985\"><\/a><strong>Components<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Over 70 active compounds<\/strong> have been found in <em>Rehmannia<\/em>, including <strong>amino acids<\/strong>,<strong> simple and complex<\/strong> <strong>sugars<\/strong>,<strong> vitamins<\/strong>, and plant-specific compounds. Their composition in extracts mostly varies according to the plant species and the root preparation method [<a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0378-8741(08)00069-X\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/cpb\/59\/5\/59_5_546\/_article\/-char\/ja\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One of the most well-known plant-specific compounds in <em>Rehmannia <\/em>is called <strong>catalpol<\/strong>, which accounts for 0.3-0.5% of the dried root. Catalpol is an iridoid glycoside, a group of molecules plants create to defend against predators. They also have a range of health effects in humans [<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF03030579\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/bph.12200\"> R,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0031942200948192?via%3Dihub\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Catalpol is likely responsible for the plant\u2019s sugar-lowering, inflammation-fighting, and immune-balancing effects in cells and animals. <em>Rehmannia <\/em>also contains rehmapicrogenin, a strong anti-inflammatory. This compound that helps deactivate one of the most important inflammation-triggering factors in cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-b\/\">NF-\u03baB<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18407446\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10753-012-9433-x\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Mechanism_of_Effect\"><a id=\"post-61661-_zerog32cgdvq\"><\/a><strong>Mechanism of Effect<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some researchers, <em>Rehmannia <\/em>may improve stress resilience and mood by enhancing the body\u2019s antioxidant defense [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19429340\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Certain complex sugars in <em>Rehmannia <\/em>may target the hippocampus, a part of the brain that plays an important role in memory and mood. Catalpol might also help brain cells resist damage. Sugar extracts of this plant increased insulin production in mice and catalpol lowered<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\"> glucose<\/a> levels in diabetic rats. Catalpol also increases the secretion of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/endorphins\/\"> endorphins<\/a> from the adrenal gland, which helps transport glucose from the blood into the muscles [<a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/abstract\/med\/1432591\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajol.info\/index.php\/ajtcam\/article\/view\/132112\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/jf200069t\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874103003386\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Traditional practitioners claim that <em>Rehmannia <\/em>can reverse anemia, and some evidence suggests that it may protect the parts of the bone marrow that make<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/increase-decrease-red-blood-cells\/\"> red blood cells<\/a>. Nourishing the blood is one of its main traditional indications, while anemia is considered to be a sign of yin deficiency. As such, early sickle-cell anemia clinical trials are in progress with a compound isolated from the steamed roots, but the results aren\u2019t in yet [<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11418-007-0206-z\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/abstract\/med\/23469598\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In cell studies, <em>Rehmannia <\/em>helped alleviate inflammation by sponging up free radicals &#8211; highly reactive compounds that can damage cells &#8211; as well as by causing immune cells to secrete fewer inflammatory signaling molecules. Importantly, it also blocked the expression of inflammatory genes in these cell studies. Reducing inflammation is beneficial in many conditions, but researchers are currently looking at its application in bone and kidney health [<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10753-012-9433-x\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1089\/jmf.2011.1940\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874112005375\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1043661899905042\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0009898103002389\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1753-0407.2011.00130.x#b7\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, this herb caused kidney cells to express fewer receptors that drive high blood pressure. According to some researchers, if this effect translates to the human body, it could make it useful for protecting the kidneys that are already strained due to other diseases, like diabetes. In a clinical study of 34 people with this disease, <em>Rehmannia <\/em>extract added to standard treatment<strong> sped up symptom remission better than standard treatment alone<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/abstract\/med\/11477910\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A combination of traditional medicines, including <em>Rehmannia<\/em>, had promising effects in another trial of 64 people with the same type of anemia. An integrative medicine approach could protect the bone marrow and red blood cells and reduce inflammation. As a result, 12 participants had blood markers comparable to healthy people [<a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/abstract\/med\/23469598\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Rehmannia <\/em>and its extracts, alone and in combination with other supplements, also improved anemia in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabdirect.org\/cabdirect\/abstract\/20003033811\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4203238\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_pjbfep9ellue\"><\/a>2) Kidney Function<\/h4>\n<p>Early evidence suggests a potential role for <em>Rehmannia <\/em>in preventing kidney failure in diabetic humans and animals [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2016\/1509063\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874103003386\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 72 people with nephrotic syndrome (a type of kidney failure), some people were given Liuwei Dihuang Pills as an add-on to standard treatment. The herbal pills improved kidney function better than the standard treatment alone [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15768870\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a similar study of 64 people with lupus nephritis &#8211; a kind of kidney inflammation &#8211; those who were given Liuwei Dihuang Pills in addition to standard treatment also had improved kidney function [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16358411\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a larger study of 479 people with chronic kidney inflammation, <em>Rehmannia <\/em>in addition to the standard care improved symptoms of kidney damage and inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/ptr.4973\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This herb\u2019s beneficial effects on kidney health were confirmed in several animal studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1753-0407.2011.00130.x#b7\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the benefits varied depending on how the roots were prepared: dry, raw, and steamed Rehmannia roots each had different effects on the kidneys of rabbits. Only dry and steamed Rehmannia reduce renin, which would be beneficial for people with high blood pressure caused by kidney disease (renal hypertension). Raw <em>Rehmannia<\/em>, on the other hand, increased renin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1142\/S0192415X93000212\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-61661-_4i2ywl3dahpg\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of <em>Rehmannia<\/em> for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking <em>Rehmannia<\/em> supplements, and never use them as a replacement for approved medical therapies.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_m1984xhu1krb\"><\/a>3) Mood &amp; Stress Resilience<\/h4>\n<p>In a study of 20 people with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\"> depression<\/a>, a <em>Rehmannia<\/em>-containing combination of herbs improved mood after four weeks. <strong>Six people experienced significant improvements, while six had some improvement<\/strong>. It\u2019s difficult to say whether Rehmannia was the herb responsible for these benefits, and since no control was included, any response could just be a placebo effect [<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1440-1819.2005.01423.x\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study, mice were subjected to bouts of unpredictable, chronic mild stress &#8211; a model that loosely correlates with human depression. <em>Rehmannia <\/em>improved the decreased antioxidant capacity in mice stressed in this way. It boosted key antioxidant enzymes,<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\"> glutathione<\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\"> SOD<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874109001214\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a sugar extract from <em>Rehmannia <\/em>decreased anxiety in rats. Complex sugars from its root could block proteins linked to anxiety in the hippocampus. This brain region is important for emotional balance, stress resilience, and memory storage. Its abnormalities are linked to both anxiety and depression [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0254627213601594\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4837065\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_6chdilrokk8a\"><\/a>4) Diabetes<\/h4>\n<p>In an analysis of 18 clinical studies including over 1,200 people with diabetes, adding <em>Rehmannia<\/em>-containing Liuwei Dihuang Pills to typical western medicine regimes improved kidney function. However, the quality of the analyzed studies was low, with many lacking controls [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/ecam\/2016\/1509063\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Rehmannia<\/em>, alone or in combination with other herbs, holds promise for diabetes. In one study, its components lowered blood sugar and improved kidney function in diabetic rats. Aside from its effects on glucose control, it may reduce diabetic complications. In one study, it decreased the size of diabetic foot ulcers in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1753-0407.2011.00130.x\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874103003386\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874109000750\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1753-0407.2011.00130.x#b7\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_mrdmsc6ajhum\"><\/a>5) Bone Loss<\/h4>\n<p><em>Rehmannia<\/em>, in combination with other herbs, may prevent bone loss. An analysis of over 100 studies including Rehmannia found that herbal formulations were generally effective, although many of the studies had limitations [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874116306250\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Rehmannia<\/em>, alone or in combination with other herbs, also helped prevent bone loss in menopausal rats and mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1420-3049\/18\/5\/5804\/htm#B9-molecules-18-05804\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378874106000389\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00223-015-0057-7\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-61661-_ghn9n65jlxig\"><\/a>Animal Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>Rehmannia<\/em> for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_qvpbu7pclipq\"><\/a>6) Brain<\/h4>\n<p>Rats with dementia given a <em>Rehmannia <\/em>extract performed better on memory and learning tests. Catalpol also protected brain cells in dishes and helped them survive the effects of bacterial toxins. Its brain-protective effects are probably closely linked to its ability to lower the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/factors-counteract-stress-response\/\">stress response<\/a>, neutralize free radicals, and affect important brain regions like the hippocampus [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.cnki.com.cn\/Article_en\/CJFDTOTAL-ZYYL200802013.htm\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23550774\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-61661-_yxn798jbh8st\"><\/a>7) Fatigue &amp; Endurance<\/h4>\n<p><em>Rehmannia <\/em>is often described as an invigorator or a tonic &#8211; essentially, a substance to wake you up and make you feel more energized. Additionally, it may cause cancer cells to express proteins that slow their growth. Its antioxidants and nutrients reduced the side effects of chemotherapy drugs, while cancer-suppressing components may boost their effect. What exactly it does, though, needs to be researched in more detail.
