Since cholesterol and triglycerides do not easily dissolve in the blood, lipoproteins help transport them around [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK351\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>You can think of lipoproteins as cars on a highway (blood vessels) and cholesterol and triglycerides as the passengers.<\/p>\n<p>The four main types of lipoproteins are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High-density lipoprotein (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a>): carriers of so-called \u201cgood cholesterol\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Low-density lipoprotein (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a>): carriers of so-called \u201cbad cholesterol\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Very low-density lipoprotein (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vldl-cholesterol-levels\/\">VLDL<\/a>): carriers of some cholesterol and mostly triglycerides; VLDL eventually becomes LDL<\/li>\n<li>Intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL): the transition form between VLDL and LDL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A standard lipid panel measures the total amount of cholesterol carried by these lipoproteins. Non-HDL cholesterol (non-HDL-C) is a measure of all of the cholesterol being carried by VLDL, IDL, and LDL [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4975250\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>HDL carries cholesterol away from the walls of blood vessels to the liver to be removed. The other three lipoproteins carry cholesterol to the blood vessels and away from the liver. They can deposit cholesterol in blood vessels, causing plaques and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4975250\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>HDL reverses this process and is the <strong>only lipoprotein that is not associated with an increased risk of heart disease<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4975250\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Non-HDL_Cholesterol_Test\"><a id=\"post-56562-_rr4hidfj1r1y\"><\/a><strong>Non-HDL Cholesterol Test<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your non-HDL-C value is calculated by subtracting your HDL-C value from your total cholesterol value. Your total cholesterol is calculated by adding your HDL-C, LDL-C, and 20% of your triglycerides (an estimate for VLDL). It is tested as part of a standard lipid panel [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4975250\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Non-HDL-C is used to assess your risk of heart disease or to decide on treatment targets for cholesterol-lowering drug therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of using non-HDL-C include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>measures all of the cholesterol<\/strong> that can cause hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), including LDL-C<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>easy to calculate <\/strong>and does not require additional costs and tests besides a lipid profile<\/li>\n<li>Does <strong>not require a fasted sample<\/strong>, unlike LDL-C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Normal_Non-HDL_Cholesterol_Levels\"><a id=\"post-56562-_m665dwpulx5q\"><\/a><strong>Normal Non-HDL Cholesterol Levels<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>normal range<\/strong> for non-HDL-C is around <strong>0 &#8211; 130 mg\/dL<\/strong> or 0 &#8211; 3.37 mmol\/L.<\/p>\n<p>Non-HDL-C levels, along with all types of cholesterol, are elevated during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4989641\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"High_Non-HDL_Cholesterol\"><a id=\"post-56562-_5d6bs4uou77p\"><\/a><strong>High Non-HDL Cholesterol<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Causes listed below are commonly associated with high cholesterol. Your doctor will interpret your results, taking into account your medical history, symptoms, and other test results.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Causes\"><a id=\"post-56562-_4psa5ehzl5fl\"><\/a>Causes<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_wxfmlag5sn6c\"><\/a>1) High-Carbohydrate Diets<\/h4>\n<p>In <strong>short-term <\/strong>trials (&lt; 3 weeks), diets <strong>high in carbohydrate and low in fat increase non-HDL-C<\/strong> substantially (64 total people) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2065027\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6436637\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6336816\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6346001\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Longer-term trials (&gt; 3 weeks) show that while <strong>VLDL-C (triglycerides) are increased, total cholesterol and LDL-C tend to decrease<\/strong> (131 total people) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9805219\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10837283\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11333840\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9861599\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_7nl6yxvbflx0\"><\/a>2) Obesity<\/h4>\n<p>LDL receptors are needed for cells to take in LDL-cholesterol. In<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\"> <strong>obesity<\/strong><\/a><strong>, there&#8217;s a reduced number of LDL receptors in the body<\/strong>, which means that more LDL stays around in the bloodstream. <strong>Obesity also increases the production of VLDL-C<\/strong> and decreases how fast it\u2019s removed from circulation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11500319\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27588438\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>As a result, multiple studies show that obese people have elevated non-HDL-C levels and that <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">weight loss<\/a> reduces non-HDL-C [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2584161\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26551311\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25247924\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK305895\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_581qwl9xyy0u\"><\/a>3) Sedentary Lifestyle<\/h4>\n<p>Research suggests that a lack of physical activity increases the levels of &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4241367\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_zg6k1gn1gcj\"><\/a>4) Hypothyroidism<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/thyroid-hormones-t4t3\/\"><strong>Thyroid hormones<\/strong><\/a><strong> increase the activity of LDL receptors<\/strong>, which remove IDL-C and LDL-C from the blood. Thyroid hormones also increase the conversion of cholesterol to<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/bile-supplements\/\"> bile<\/a> acids [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3109527\/#R1\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There are fewer LDL receptors in people with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). This means that IDL-C and LDL-C increase in the blood. As a result,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-thyroid-hormones-low-t3-syndrome\/\"> hypothyroidism<\/a> increases non-HDL-C levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3972592\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20032565\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18355770\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Non-HDL-C was also increased in a study of 1443 people with undiagnosed mild (subclinical) hypothyroidism [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29846957\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taking thyroid hormones reduced high non-HDL-C levels<\/strong> in 39 people with hypothyroidism. Another study of 26 people found that one year of thyroid hormone replacement decreased non-HDL-C in hypothyroidism [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17148561\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18355770\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_4mlm8g4juzui\"><\/a>5) Smoking<\/h4>\n<p>In a study of 75 people, <strong>those who smoked had 25% higher non-HDL-C levels<\/strong> compared to non-smokers. Two other studies have also found non-HDL-C levels to be higher in smokers (281 total people) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3576744\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6829404\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11256905\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another study of 1,500 people found that more cigarettes smoked per day were linked to higher non-HDL-C levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2802067\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_9ez5npbei430\"><\/a>6) Type 2 Diabetes<\/h4>\n<p>Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of heart disease. This is partly due to chronic inflammation and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\"> resistance<\/a>, which increase non-HDL-C levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5776102\/\">R<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>As such, <strong>non-HDL-C levels are often elevated in people with type 2 diabetes, even when LDL levels are within the normal range<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24074449\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4912023\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24640797\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20479581\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24579534\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27316499\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In 339 people with type 2 diabetes, higher non-HDL-C levels were associated with worse diabetes control and higher BMI [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24636179\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_5jd9bkh4tzpq\"><\/a>7) Infection and Inflammation<\/h4>\n<p>Inflammation-promoting cytokines in Inflammation and infection increase VLDL production [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK326741\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/h-pylori-part-1\/\"><em>H. pylori<\/em><\/a> infection is consistently associated with increased levels of non-HDL-C. Multiple studies of 5,200 people found that getting rid of <em>H. pylori <\/em>decreases non-HDL-C levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5990401\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5538697\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12849867\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18649137\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3082118\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9920523\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20134372\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25382033\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>H. pylori<\/em> is also linked to a higher risk of heart disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25382033\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5348668\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A meta-analysis of 15 studies with 105k people found that <strong>gum inflammation<\/strong> increased the risk of heart disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17967586\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a meta-analysis of 18 studies and 1940 people, <strong>gum inflammation was linked to increased levels of non-HDL-C<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28782128\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 68 people, successful treatment of gum inflammation decreased non-HDL-C. Two studies of 149 people found that <strong>gum inflammation treatment reduced non-HDL-C levels<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19411077\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26434651\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17639748\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Multiple studies of 597 total people found that non-HDL-C levels were higher in people with psoriasis. One study in 70 people with psoriasis found that nearly 63% had non-HDL-C levels above the normal range [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12619171\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17497039\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17958837\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4897293\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4384866\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-56562-_sfflaky5031z\"><\/a>8) Kidney Disease<\/h4>\n<p>Kidney disease increases the amount of VLDL the body makes and reduces how fast it\u2019s broken down.
