Moon drop grapes grow over a short season and are available between August 20 and November 15, via a company called Grapery [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.specialtyproduce.com\/produce\/Moon_Drop_Grapes_12688.php\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grapery.biz\/index.php\/our-grapes\/moon-drops\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Do_They_Taste_Like\"><a id=\"post-55965-_a7oam7mafot7\"><\/a>What Do They Taste Like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Moon drop grapes taste like normal grapes but are sweeter and much crunchier [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.specialtyproduce.com\/produce\/Moon_Drop_Grapes_12688.php\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Nutrition\"><a id=\"post-55965-_77oedovqbbjn\"><\/a>Nutrition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Like all grapes, moon drop grapes have several nutritious components. <strong>Though moon drop grapes have not been specifically studied<\/strong>, they contain many of the same compounds as common grapes, as they are the same species [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0101-20612014000100020\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dietary fiber<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Nitrogenous compounds such as proteins and amino acids. Viscous fiber can expand in the stomach and slow down the digestion process. It can also work to bulk up fecal matter and help relieve<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-ibs-general-gut-dysfunction\/\"> constipation<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21476884\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Benefits_of_Moon_Drop_Grapes\"><a id=\"post-55965-_1s45k1y2jhf7\"><\/a>Potential Benefits of Moon Drop Grapes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Moon drop grapes are safe to eat as food, but supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use and generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-55965-_66x7qpkbzl3h\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of moon drop grapes for any of the below-listed uses.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore<strong>, many of the purported benefits of moon drop grapes are based entirely on studies of their components (such as certain nutrients or, most often, resveratrol), rather than direct studies of the fruits themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moon drop grapes should never be used in place of something your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_gxts45thh08n\"><\/a>1) Constipation<\/h4>\n<p>All grapes contain fiber, which can prevent constipation and increase the movement of material in the digestive system [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21476884\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial of 34 people, 4 tbsp\/day of a natural laxative containing raisins was more effective than prescription<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-laxatives\/\"> laxatives<\/a> at producing a normal frequency and consistency of bowel movements [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17430744\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_3pbz4y8jzowr\"><\/a>2) Bone Strength<\/h4>\n<p>Moon drop grapes have many nutrients that may be helpful for bone health, such as<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/copper\/\"> copper<\/a> and manganese, which help in bone formation and strength. These nutrients prevent the development of conditions such as osteoporosis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23244535\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 66 people, 1,000 mg of resveratrol increased bone mineral density in the spine but not the hip. It also increased bone<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alkaline-phosphatase\/\"> alkaline phosphatase<\/a> levels, a marker of bone formation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25322274\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_toop1wip1f0\"><\/a>3) Heart Disease<\/h4>\n<p>Like other grapes, moon drop grape skins contain beneficial compounds. One of these compounds, resveratrol (a polyphenol), is thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25451966\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3398412\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4553113\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 26 people with high blood pressure, red grape juice was able to reduce blood pressure for some people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28853994\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>300 mg of resveratrol decreased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\"> cholesterol<\/a> levels in a study of 60 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25577300\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In studies with animal models, resveratrol had a beneficial effect on high blood pressure, clogged arteries, stroke, heart disease, irregular heartbeat, and heart failure. These effects may be due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However much more studies are needed to confirm this theory [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25451966\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3398412\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4553113\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_2x32cbrlpf23\"><\/a>4) Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome<\/h4>\n<p>In a study of 24 people with metabolic syndrome, 500 mg trans-resveratrol decreased weight, fat mass, BMI, waist circumference, and total<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"> insulin<\/a> secretion [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25137036\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Treatment with 250 mg\/day of resveratrol improved <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hemoglobin-good-bad-lab-tests-normal-values-reference-ranges\/\">hemoglobin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hba1c-what-is-it-and-why-is-it-important\/\"> A1c<\/a>, total<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\"> cholesterol<\/a>, and systolic blood pressure but not <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a> or LDL cholesterol in a study of 62 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22901562\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, a study of 66 men found that resveratrol did not have any beneficial effects on metabolic syndrome. Surprisingly, 1,000 mg resveratrol actually increased total and LDL cholesterol and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/fructosamine\/\">fructosamine<\/a> levels (a marker for diabetes). Inflammatory status, sugar levels, blood pressure, and liver fat content were not improved with resveratrol treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28182820\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A study of 192 type 2 diabetes patients also found that resveratrol supplementation did not change any of the parameters measured, notably <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting\/\">fasting<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\"> glucose<\/a>, insulin, hemoglobin A1c, weight, waist circumference, or blood pressure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27520400\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_mbrpt1petgio\"><\/a>5) Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease<\/h4>\n<p>In a study of 60 people, 300 mg of resveratrol improved various aspects of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, decreasing <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/aspartate-aminotransferase-ast\/\">aspartate aminotransferase<\/a>, glucose, and LDL cholesterol levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25577300\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_3ud8t7cfbqyr\"><\/a>6) Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/h4>\n<p>Resveratrol and other phytochemicals found in grapes are thought to have a protective effect against Alzheimer\u2019s disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29293440\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25627672\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Grape powder containing various phytochemicals like resveratrol prevented metabolic decline in brain regions associated with the development of Alzheimer\u2019s disease in a DB-RCT with 10 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27856335\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although 500 &#8211; 1,000 mg\/day of resveratrol seemed to have some effects on the brain, it did not alter markers of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and also <strong>increased brain volume loss<\/strong> in a DB-RCT of 119 people. This loss in brain volume was not associated with any cognitive or functional declines [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4626244\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_and_Cellular_Studies\"><a id=\"post-55965-_qsz0k5kbn8ja\"><\/a>Animal and Cellular Studies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following studies were only conducted on animal models or cell lines.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_lceb9chscq06\"><\/a>7) Age-Related Eye Diseases<\/h4>\n<p>Several age-related eye conditions, such as <strong>cataracts, diabetic retinopathy (vision loss), glaucoma, and macular degeneration<\/strong>, are thought to be related to<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> and inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848669\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Two review studies determined that resveratrol may potentially help age-related eye diseases due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammation effects. However, human trials need to be conducted [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848669\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28006748\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-55965-_ejrcyv7sla20\"><\/a>8) Asthma<\/h4>\n<p>In two animal studies, grape extracts were beneficial for asthma due to allergies. This effect may be due to its anti-inflammatory properties [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4988050\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27502540\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects\"><a id=\"post-55965-_bqdyc29yyrj4\"><\/a>Side Effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Consumption of grapes in normal amounts has very few side effects and is generally very safe. Some commonly experienced side effects include [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5435979\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4626244\/\"> R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abdominal cramping<\/li>\n<li>Bloating<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Flatulence<\/li>\n<li>Gas<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">Weight loss<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Drugs_Interactions\"><a id=\"post-55965-_szst4338x64r\"><\/a>Drugs Interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following listed drug interactions are not exhaustive. Common brands of cyclosporine include Neoral, Sandimmune, Gengraf, Restasis, and Restasis MultiDose [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22417366\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11701226\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29703387\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Resveratrol inhibits enzymes (such as CYP3A,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cyp3a4\/\"> CYP3A4<\/a>) that break down or deactivate many types of drugs and therefore can increase the potency of those drugs [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22417366\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11125847\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11701226\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18058330\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Grapes_and_Pets\"><a id=\"post-55965-_febwsfwbcf9p\"><\/a>Grapes and Pets<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Grapes and raisins <strong>can be toxic to pets, especially dogs<\/strong>, with hundreds of reported cases of severe toxicity. If your pet has eaten even a single grape, <strong>call your veterinarian or pet poison control immediately<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4801869\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Limitations_and_Caveats\"><a id=\"post-55965-_n23zuec68s77\"><\/a>Limitations and Caveats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While moon drop grapes should have similar effects and properties to grapes of the same species, <em>Vitis vinifera<\/em>, <strong>there have been no studies specifically conducted on this varietal<\/strong>. Therefore, the results from these studies can only be theoretically applied to moon drop grapes.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the effects of moon drop grapes or of the polyphenol found in grape skin, resveratrol, have only been conducted in animal models or on cell lines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many of the studies<\/strong> <strong>directly contradicted other studies<\/strong>. For example, while many studies touted the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of resveratrol, a DB-RCT of 20 people found that 500 mg of resveratrol had no antioxidant or anti-inflammatory effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23298135\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25311610\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27523436\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Dosage\"><a id=\"post-55965-_9pien6hpsxxb\"><\/a>Dosage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is no standard dosage for grape consumption.<\/p>\n<p>In the studies examining the effects of resveratrol, dosages as high as 1,000 mg\/day were used.
