It is believed to <strong>combat diabetes<\/strong> and help with <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">weight loss<\/a>, while its most peculiar ability is to temporarily <strong>suppress the taste of sugar<\/strong> on the tongue.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gymnema<\/em> is also known by the common names cowplant, gurmar, and periploca of the woods, and the scientific names <em>Asclepias geminata<\/em> and <em>Periploca sylvestris<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24304585\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Components\"><a id=\"post-53040-_yfz1tbz0u1k5\"><\/a><strong>Components<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The extracts of <em>Gymnema sylvestre <\/em>are usually <strong>prepared from the leaves<\/strong>, although the roots are also used in traditional medicine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7564423\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important components in the leaves of<em> Gymnema silvestre<\/em> are the saponins. Saponins are molecules that help dissolve oily substances and are used in cosmetics, pharmaceutics, and as food additives. They can help reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a> and fight cancer, but can also kill<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/increase-decrease-red-blood-cells\/\"> red blood cells<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25295776\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Saponins found in <em>Gymnema<\/em> leaves (triterpene saponins) are called <strong>gymnemic acids<\/strong>, and are responsible for its anti-sweet property [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/4733385\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24511547\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Gurmarin is a peptide present in the leaves, which also blocks the sweet taste in rats, but has very little effect in humans [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1685952\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other components with biological activities are [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24511547\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anthraquinones<\/li>\n<li>Steroids and cardiac glycosides<\/li>\n<li>Alkaloids<\/li>\n<li>Terpenoids<\/li>\n<li>Flavonoids, molecules that give food their attractive colors<\/li>\n<li>Essential oils<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Mechanisms_of_Action\"><a id=\"post-53040-_2fl828svrs1r\"><\/a><strong>Mechanisms of Action<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Many of the mechanisms below have been investigated in animals and cells only; this section discusses the potential mechanisms by which <em>Gymnema<\/em> exerts the effects observed in clinical studies, but these should not be considered benefits of <em>Gymnema<\/em> unless and until clinical studies are available.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-53040-_52nmgqydf0sj\"><\/a><strong>Blocking Sweet Taste<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Gymnemic acid <strong>blocks the taste of sugar<\/strong> (sucrose) and other <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interesting-facts-artificial-sweeteners\/\">artificial sweeteners<\/a> like <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interesting-facts-artificial-sweeteners\/\"><strong>saccharin<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interesting-facts-artificial-sweeteners\/\"><strong>aspartame<\/strong><\/a>, and cyclamate; but does not affect other flavors. It is believed to bind with the taste buds on the tongue, blocking the interaction with sugar and other compounds that activate sweet receptors [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7564423\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10480675\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This effect<strong> wears off in approximately 40 minutes<\/strong> and has been recorded in humans, dogs, hamsters, and rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7564423\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10480675\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-53040-_5nlmxw5cr9dz\"><\/a><strong>Blood Sugar<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Gymnemic acid lowered sugar blood levels, possibly by increasing the amount of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"> insulin<\/a> in the blood, and by activating the mechanisms by which the body uses and stores<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\"> glucose<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7027275\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6865451\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Gymnemic acid inhibits the secretion of an enzyme (gastric inhibitory peptide) that promotes the release of insulin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1453221\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Gymnema<\/em> extract, OSA, promoted the release of insulin from the beta-cells of the pancreas, possibly by activating protein kinases and interacting with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/calcium-101\/\"> calcium<\/a> channels. It also promotes the synthesis of a precursor (preproinsulin) helping maintain a steady level of stored insulin in the beta-cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19255507\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22911568\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22775778\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Gymnema<\/em> extract helped both protect and regenerate beta-cells (the cells that produce insulin) in the pancreas of diabetic rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20537514\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>At higher doses, gymnemic acid increased the release of insulin from the beta-cells of the pancreas, apparently by damaging their membrane, causing insulin to \u201cleak\u201d out [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10556769\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-53040-_33ddhj9ok1qn\"><\/a><strong>Fat Levels in the Blood<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Gymnemic acid slowed the contraction of the small intestine, thus reducing the absorption of some substances like glucose and fat [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9152931\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11819725\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10100884\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Gymnemic acid also affected the metabolism of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a> in rats, increasing the elimination (fecal excretion) of cholesterol, neutral steroids, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/bile-supplements\/\">bile<\/a> acids [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10356090\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11411567\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In genetically obese rats, gymnemic acid improved fat metabolism by lowering the levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides<\/a> and total cholesterol and increasing the proportion of \u201cgood cholesterol\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a>-cholesterol) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16691318\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Gymnema<\/em> extract decreases pancreatic <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lipase-test\/\">lipase<\/a> activity, an enzyme that breaks down fat, allowing it to be absorbed by the gut. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_For\"><a id=\"post-53040-_9k5yldixas6t\"><\/a>Possibly Effective For<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-53040-_bohhgpblvw0\"><\/a>1) Diabetes<\/h4>\n<p>The needed drug dose was reduced in 22 patients with type 2 diabetes taking 400 mg of a <em>Gymnema<\/em> supplement (GS4) along with their medication for 18 &#8211; 20 months in a CT. 5 patients didn\u2019t need any conventional treatment at all for the duration of the trial [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2259217\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>When 27 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes took 400 mg a day of a <em>Gymnema<\/em> supplement (GS4) for up to 30 months in a CT, their needed insulin dose was reduced to almost half [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2259216\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a CT with 11 patients with type 2 diabetes taking 1 g a day of a <em>Gymnema<\/em> supplement (OSA) for 60 days, blood glucose decreased as a result of higher blood insulin levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20812281\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a CT with 8 patients with type 2 diabetes taking 500 mg of ground <em>Gymnema<\/em> leaves for 40 days, glucose levels lowered, but there was no change in fat levels (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL or <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26665406\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Gymnema<\/em> extracts are believed to help improve diabetes by the combination of several actions: slowing the absorption of glucose in the gut, stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas while helping to regenerate the cells that produce it (beta-cells, which are damaged by diabetes), and correcting the use and storage of glucose in the body.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, larger trials of <em>Gymnema<\/em> are lacking.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-53040-_vq97oyn8818j\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of <em>Gymnema<\/em> for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking <em>Gymnema<\/em> supplements, and never use them in place of something a doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-53040-_175eebyl0stx\"><\/a>2) Weight Management<\/h4>\n<p>Some evidence suggests that <em>Gymnema<\/em> extracts may aid<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\"> weight loss<\/a> by helping control sweet cravings, and by diminishing the absorption of glucose and fat from the gut. In 24 overweight adults with metabolic syndrome, 600 mg\/day of <em>Gymnema<\/em> slightly reduced BMI after 12 weeks [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28459647\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, in a CT with 11 patients with type 2 diabetes, taking 1 g\/day of a <em>Gymnema<\/em> supplement (OSA) for 60 days <strong>did not cause weight loss<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20812281\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>While the use of a <em>Gymnema<\/em> extract did not cause weight loss in normal rats, it did <strong>stop <\/strong>weight gain in genetically obese rats and in rats fed with high fat and cafeteria (high carb) diets [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10356090\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23112423\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16691318\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22486040\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Cell_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-53040-_b9l57vuo4289\"><\/a>Animal &amp; Cell Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>Gymnema<\/em> for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-53040-_j3ib1onp69m\"><\/a>3) Heart Disease<\/h4>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-carb-diet-vs-high-carb-diet\/\"><strong>high-fat diet<\/strong><\/a><strong> can elevate blood levels of triglycerides and total and bad cholesterol<\/strong>. This is a<strong> risk factor for the narrowing and hardening of the arteries<\/strong> (atherosclerosis), which can develop into coronary heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>The ability of <em>Gymnema<\/em> to lower blood fat levels, particularly of bad cholesterol, <strong>protected obese rats fed with a high-fat diet from heart disease and hardening of the arteries<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23112423\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/ptr.2650080216\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-53040-_40qhh2jqpaoc\"><\/a>4) Antioxidant Activity<\/h4>\n<p>Certain (phenolic) compounds present in plants act as antioxidants.
