People can then be trained to learn to control the way these processes are carried out [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23777436\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4306760\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Neurofeedback<\/em>\u201d is a specific form of biofeedback training, which is based on the idea that people can consciously alter the way their brains function by using training programs to help them to visualize and learn to change the patterns of electrical activity taking place in their brain [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Types_of_Neurofeedback_Training\"><a id=\"post-52923-_pk9v56cyerku\"><\/a>Types of Neurofeedback Training<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All neurofeedback techniques involve measuring and visualizing activity patterns of the brain so that the patient can gradually learn how to change the way their brain functions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There are several different forms of neurofeedback training, which each target different aspects of brain activity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=szECZPz7FvcC&amp;pg=PA492&amp;lpg=PA492&amp;dq=blood+oxygen+level-dependent+(BOLD)+Hemoencephalography&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=Co9d0n8PAJ&amp;sig=aXoSKrg4Fh88UNEdGXslYrlX-80&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjV7bO73u_cAhUF7p8KHTH1D6gQ6AEwDXoECAIQAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=blood%20oxygen%20level-dependent%20(BOLD)%20Hemoencephalography&amp;f=false\"> R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slow cortical potentials (SCP) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23264371\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4109432\/\"> R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Hemoencephalography (HEG) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4869785\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5459322\/\"> R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Brain-wave training (BWT) or Frequency-band training (FBT) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\"> R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In <em>slow cortical potentials<\/em> training, patients learn to control the overall activity levels (<em>excitability<\/em>) of the cerebral cortex as it responds to different stimuli. The feedback uses <em>electroencephalography<\/em> (EEG) to measure the electrical activity of the brain [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23264371\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4109432\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4244863\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In <em>hemoencephalography<\/em> training, patients learn to consciously control the level of blood flow to different parts of the brain, which can theoretically enhance or suppress different mental processes (depending on the brain area being targeted). Feedback is based on infrared light that measures oxygenated blood levels (near-infrared) or that measures the heat generated by brain activation and oxygenated blood levels (passive-infrared) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4869785\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5459322\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, the most popular form of neurofeedback training is <em>brain wave training<\/em> &#8211; also sometimes known as frequency band training &#8211; of which there are multiple protocols (for each brain wave frequency). EEG is used to measure different patterns of the electrical activity of the brain. This technique trains patients to increase or decrease the strength or speed of various brain waves associated with certain specific cognitive functions or mental states [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Neurofeedback therapy can be administered in a number of different forms, the most popular of which is brain wave training, also known as frequency band training.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"What_Are_Brain_Waves\"><a id=\"post-52923-_p5q436nppgyj\"><\/a>What Are Brain Waves?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To understand how neurofeedback works, we first have to know what \u201cbrain waves\u201d are!<\/p>\n<p>Your brain is made up of billions of neurons, all of which are constantly firing together in different patterns, or \u201cwaves\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24174901\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Just like the rhythms in different types of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/20-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-music-blood-pressure-insomnia\/\">music<\/a>, brain waves can have different strengths (amplitudes) or speeds (frequencies) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25928684\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>These frequencies can then be classified into different categories (called <em>frequency bands<\/em>). Each of these different frequency bands is associated with different particular cognitive and emotional processes in the brain [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26164473\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24709570\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23895875\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Theoretically, this means that if we could learn how to increase or decrease the strength or speed of certain brain waves, we might be able to gain some conscious control over how our brains process and react to different sensations and events [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Brain waves are the patterns of activity in the neurons of the brain. They can vary in their amplitude and frequency.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"How_Neurofeedback_Works\"><a id=\"post-52923-_3enwbo5nlnj\"><\/a>How Neurofeedback Works<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ordinarily, people cannot directly in\ufb02uence their brain wave patterns. However, the main idea behind neurofeedback training is that by giving people the ability to see their brain waves on a computer screen in real-time, they might be able to develop the ability to learn how to gradually in\ufb02uence and change them &#8211; even if only subconsciously. The mechanism of action that is believed to be at work is a phenomenon called <em>operant conditioning<\/em> &#8211; a learning process where the strength of a behavior is modified by reward or punishment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23538085\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Neurofeedback_Assessment\"><a id=\"post-52923-_k15fca8ej5fl\"><\/a>Neurofeedback Assessment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first step in neurofeedback involves putting a series of electrodes onto a person&#8217;s scalp and forehead to create a sort of \u201cbrain map.\u201d Each electrode measures the electrical patterns taking place in the part of the brain underneath where each electrode is placed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Next, if conducting brain wave training or slow cortical potentials training, the brain\u2019s electrical activity is categorized into a set of specific \u201cbrain waves\u201d based on their frequency (speed of oscillations). There are five well-known brain wave frequency types [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24690579\"> R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gamma (40.0 Hz and up)<\/li>\n<li>Beta (14.0 &#8211; 40.0 Hz)<\/li>\n<li>Alpha (7.5 &#8211; 14.0 Hz)<\/li>\n<li>Theta (4.0 &#8211; 7.5 Hz)<\/li>\n<li>Delta (0.5 &#8211; 4.0 Hz)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A visual representation of these brain waves called a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG), which you could think of as a sort of \u201cbrain map.\u201d This \u201cbrain map\u201d can then be compared to those from healthy individuals of a similar age and sex to identify any parts of the brain that might be functioning abnormally or sub-optimally [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">During the first step of neurofeedback, the practitioner produces a sort of \u201cbrain map\u201d called a quantitative electroencephalogram, reading data from electrodes placed on the scalp and forehead.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Neurofeedback_Training\"><a id=\"post-52923-_i62y8tqthw0k\"><\/a>Neurofeedback Training<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After identifying any potential abnormalities in brain function, a neurofeedback specialist can create specialized training programs that are tailored to the individual seeking treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24975621\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4892319\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>During training sessions (typically 40-60 minutes), electrodes are placed on the scalp. The patient then receives some form of positive or negative sensory feedback when their brain waves become closer to or further away from the desired pattern of activity. For example, some people report feeling fatigued, disoriented, anxious, agitated or irritable.
