According to the product\u2019s proponents, this may allow liposomal vitamin C to fuse directly with cells in the gut, thereby allowing the vitamin C to be absorbed more quickly and effectively [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24338748\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Better_Absorption\"><b>Better Absorption?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Liposomal vitamin C is designed to have better bioavailability<\/b>, which means that more of the consumed vitamin C should be taken up into the body, the bloodstream, and ultimately tissue. The exact composition may vary between manufacturers, but most contain only these ingredients. If you choose to use liposomal vitamin C, make sure to read the label and check for any surprises [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4915787\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>New liposomes are being developed with other natural compounds, such as medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). MCFAs may grant liposomal vitamin C a longer half-life [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3821584\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Conventional vitamin C tablets and powders, on the other hand, can contain numerous additional ingredients that help during the tablet-making process, such as fillers (hypromellose), lubricants (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/21-proven-science-based-reasons-magnesium-amazing-including-drawbacks\/\">magnesium<\/a> stearate), flavors, stabilizers, and silica. Further human studies will be required. Talk to your doctor before using liposomal vitamin C for any reason.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Complications_of_Stroke_and_Heart_Attack\"><b>1) Complications of Stroke and Heart Attack<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Stroke, heart attack, and other serious health complications can arise when the supply of oxygen is blocked. After the initial shock and damage of a stroke or heart attack, doctors will try to <b>revive the tissue with new blood (reperfusion)<\/b>. However, the abrupt flow of new oxygen can further damage the injured tissues, termed \u201cischemia-reperfusion injury\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5648017\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A handful of clinical trials have suggested that intravenous vitamin C may mitigate the damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury. Since liposomal vitamin C is absorbed at a similar rate to intravenous vitamin C, it is being investigated as an option to prevent injury while restoring the damaged tissues [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5648017\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5861638\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one study, 11 middle-aged, overweight participants (with high baseline oxidative stress) underwent a simulation of reperfusion injury on their arm. Liposomal vitamin C was nearly as effective as the gold standard, IV administration, in preventing tissue damage [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4915787\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study on this type of injury in rats, <b>liposomes with both vitamin C and E <\/b>prevented damage in brain tissue [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11428552\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Liposomal vitamin C has very little clinical evidence (compared to intravenous vitamin C) to back up its use in ischemia-reperfusion injury so far. Given the positive initial findings, further studies are likely to be conducted.<\/p>\n<p>Do not attempt to administer intravenous vitamin C to either yourself or someone else. Vitamin C is available in creams or washes for people with melasma. It is sometimes delivered using a technique called iontophoresis, where a <b>painless full-face mask conducts a small electrical current<\/b> to help transport vitamin C across the skin barrier [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23377327\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 35 mostly female patients (only including one man) with melasma, liposomal vitamin C full-face masks (iontophoresis) improved skin pigmentation by 73% over 2 months. The patients also avoided sun exposure and used mandelic\/<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/malic-acid\/\">malic acid<\/a> skincare products; the specific role of the vitamin C is therefore unclear [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23377327\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 14 women with melasma (SB), liposomal vitamin C iontophoresis proved to be <b>both safe and effective<\/b>. In this study, vitamin C was delivered in <b>nanosomes<\/b>, which are an especially small form of liposome [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22360337\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to one study, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/pectin\/\">pectin<\/a> coatings may also increase the amount of vitamin C that the skin absorbs from liposomes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24681045\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>UV Damage<\/h4>\n<p><b>Ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage<\/b> is caused when harmful, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">reactive oxygen species<\/a>, are formed in the skin tissue. Excessive UV exposure can lead to many skin conditions, including melanoma and other skin cancers. Vitamin C, due to its antioxidant properties, can <b>reduce and prevent the damage when applied to the skin<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Topical+Vitamin+C+Protects+Porcine+Skin+from+Ultraviolet+Radiation-Induced+Damage\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Photoprotective+Potential+of+Lycopene\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In animals exposed to long-term UV damage, <b>a combination of antioxidants<\/b> (vitamin C, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/importance-real-vitamin-retinol\/\">vitamin A<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vitamin-e-can-help-fertility-pregnancy\/\">vitamin E<\/a>) packed into tiny liposomes (nanosomes) protected against skin damage. It also reduced skin cancer markers and may be beneficial for cancer prevention [<a href=\"https:\/\/idea.library.drexel.edu\/islandora\/object\/idea%3A3814\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Liposomal vitamin C is more stable and can pass the skin barrier better than regular vitamin C. This makes antioxidant liposomes ideal for protecting the skin from UV radiation. Liposomal antioxidants (as nanosomes), including vitamin C, protected skin cells exposed to UVA damage [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8982264\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3821584\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Photoprotective+Potential+of+Lycopene\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Animal_Studies_Lacking_Evidence\">Animal Studies (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Tropical_Parasites\"><b>3) Tropical Parasites<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a severe, <b>potentially fatal tropical disease caused by parasites<\/b>. In infected mice, liposomes containing a combination of vitamin C and a conventional drug (antimonial) were effective at killing the parasites. The drug is needed to kill the parasite, but <b>Vitamin C appeared to reduce its toxic side effects<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25105501\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer_Research\"><b>Cancer Research<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>High doses of vitamin C are used to combat cancer in combination with traditional chemotherapy. Vitamin C lacks evidence to be used as the sole cancer treatment, according to a meta-analysis of over 30 human trials. However, the authors concluded that it has a <b>good safety profile and may improve the quality of life of cancer patients<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24867961\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Liposomal vitamin C, due to its high bioavailability, may be a viable alternative to IV administration. Compared to IV, liposomes are significantly less unpleasant for patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24867961\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21845505\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Limitations_and_Caveats\"><b>Limitations and Caveats<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Not everyone absorbs nutrients and vitamins from food at the same rate. Essentially, <b>a study describing benefits in certain individuals may not apply to others<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Individual differences are hard to account for in studies examining vitamin benefits. It\u2019s also still not commonplace to measure the exact antioxidant and vitamin content of different foods. Most studies concluded that <b>vitamin- and antioxidant-rich foods are more beneficial than vitamin supplements<\/b>. However, more research is needed to understand the differences [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24484938\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Comparisons_to_Conventional_Tablets\"><b>Comparisons to Conventional Tablets<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Vitamin C levels reach <b>a plateau effect with oral vitamin C<\/b>. This means that <b>past a certain dosage, the vitamin levels cannot further increase<\/b>. The main benefit of liposomal vitamin C over traditional tablets is faster and better absorption. But <b>even oral liposomes may only be taken in by the body up to a certain dose<\/b>. Further studies are needed to determine what the maximal dose is [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15068981\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects_Precautions\"><b>Side Effects &amp; Precautions<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Kidney_Stones\"><b>1) Kidney Stones<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Common dietary levels of vitamin C (75 &#8211; 100 mg per day) were not linked to kidney stones in one analysis (long-term prospective cohort). Talk to your doctor to avoid unexpected interactions and adverse events.<\/p>\n<h4><b>1) Amphetamines<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Vitamin C reduced the number of amphetamines (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dextroamphetamine\/\">dextroamphetamine<\/a>, benzphetamine, etc.) in rats. Those who use amphetamines for ADD\/ADHD and related disorders should be wary of this interaction, as it may reduce the effects of their medications [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3628833\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>2) Copper<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Vitamin C levels in the blood and its health effects are reduced in combination with copper. Copper also reverses the DNA-protective effect of vitamin C. This is because vitamin C, as an antioxidant, neutralizes metal ions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11518565\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4959991\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>3) Estrogens<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Vitamin C can increase estrogen hormones (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\">Estradiol<\/a>, Estrone, Hexestrol, etc.). Users of estrogens (including <b>birth control pills<\/b>) should be mindful of this interaction. In one study, vitamin C stimulated estradiol production in cells. Clinical studies are lacking, though [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24830780\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Genes_Related_to_Liposomal_Vitamin_C\"><b>Genes Related to Liposomal Vitamin C<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The gene responsible for absorbing vitamin C in the intestine (SVCT), has two copies in healthy individuals. In one study, mice without this gene absorbed much less vitamin C from their diet. <b>Liposomal vitamin C, however, may bypass this transport protein<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4959991\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Dosage_Sources\"><b>Dosage &amp; Sources<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The National Institute of Health recommends a vitamin C dosage of <b>90 mg\/day in adult men and 75mg\/day in adult women with an upper limit of 2,000 mg\/day<\/b>.
