Discuss with your doctor if it may be helpful in your case.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_for\"><b>Insufficient Evidence for:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies.<\/p>\n<p>There is insufficient evidence to support the use of cod liver oil for any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking cod liver oil supplements, which should never replace approved medical therapies.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Lowering_Triglycerides\">2) Lowering Triglycerides<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As discussed above, cod liver oil\u2019s omega-3 fatty acids reduce blood triglyceride levels by decreasing the production of these fatty molecules [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3279313\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 34 healthy people, dietary cod liver oil reduced triglyceride levels in both men and women [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8436090\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cod liver oil <b>decreased <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\"><b>triglycerides<\/b><\/a> (and bad cholesterol -VLDL-) levels in 18 patients with diabetes and kidney problems (albuminuria) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2685599\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 21 men recovering from a heart attack, cod liver oil reduced blood triglyceride (but not cholesterol) levels and increased the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in cell membranes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2280233\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">You may try cod liver oil to lower your triglycerides if your doctor determines that it may help you, but the evidence is inconclusive.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Benefits_During_Pregnancy\"><b>3) Benefits During Pregnancy<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The essential fatty acid DHA is important for healthy brain development. It can\u2019t be made in the body and must be consumed in the diet. Infants of mothers who consumed 10 mL of cod liver oil during pregnancy and breastfeeding had<b> higher <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/best-way-to-increase-higher-level-thinking\/\"><b>IQ<\/b><\/a><b> scores at 4 years of age<\/b> in a study of 76 infants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12509593\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 435 pregnant women, intake of cod liver oil during pregnancy was associated with an <b>increased weight of infants at birth<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15777439\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Beneficial nutrients from cod liver oil pass into breast milk. Cod liver oil <b>increased levels of DHA<\/b> in breast milk in a study of 22 women. In two studies of 77 nursing mothers, cod liver oil and fish intake <b>increased the amount of healthy fatty acids<\/b> (DHA, EPA, and DPA) <b>as well as fat-soluble vitamins<\/b> (A, D, and E) in breast milk [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9846598\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16508255\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11786649\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">The results are promising but the evidence is still limited. Further clinical trials are needed to shed more light on the potential benefits of cod liver oil during pregnancy.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Preventing_Multiple_Sclerosis\"><b>4) Preventing Multiple Sclerosis<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cod liver oil <b>reduced the risk of multiple sclerosis <\/b>among those who spent less time outside during the summer in a study of over 500 children [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17377831\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of almost 2700 Norwegians, the use of cod liver oil across the ages 13-18 was also associated with a <b>reduced risk of multiple sclerosis<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25948625\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Results from early cohort studies are promising but insufficient. The impact of cod liver oil on preventing multiple sclerosis needs to be further investigated.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Preventing_Depression\"><b>5) Preventing Depression<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In two studies on over 23,000 people, those who took cod liver oil were less likely to suffer from<b> depression. <\/b>Again, the evidence is only based on cohort studies. It suggests that cod liver oil helps prevent depression, but further research is needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17184843\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29484348\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Preventing_Type-1_Diabetes\"><b>6) Preventing Type-1 Diabetes<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Consumption of cod liver oil during the first year of life was associated with a <b>reduced risk of developing type-1 diabetes during childhood <\/b>in a study of over 500 children [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14668274\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of diabetic rats, cod liver oil improved <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">blood sugar<\/a> control and blood fat levels while protecting against <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">oxidative stress<\/a> (from free radicals) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12415563\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Once again, the only clinical research is an observational study that cannot establish cod liver oil intake as the <i>cause <\/i>of the low type-1 diabetes incidence observed. Clinical trials are needed.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Rheumatoid_Arthritis\"><b>7) Rheumatoid Arthritis<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a pilot study of 43 people with rheumatoid arthritis, cod liver oil (1 g\/day for 3 months) <b>decreased morning stiffness, painful and swollen joints, and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\"><b>pain<\/b><\/a><b> intensity <\/b>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12069368\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another trial on 30 people with this condition, cod liver oil (five 300 mg capsules, 2x\/day) reduced the use of arthritis medications (Diclofenac Sodium) and had fewer side effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23998063\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up study of 58 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 10 g cod liver oil (with 2.2 g of omega 3s) over 9 months reduced the use of painkillers (diclofenac, naproxen, and ibuprofen) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18362100\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Since only small clinical trials have been conducted, the evidence is insufficient to claim that cod liver oil improves rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, or depression. Larger, more robust studies are needed.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Inflammation\"><b>8) Inflammation<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cod liver oil <b>reduced inflammation<\/b> of the middle ear in 8 children undergoing ear surgery [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12126022\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>50 mL of cod liver oil reduced inflammation <\/b>in 67 healthy adults (as measured by <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-alpha<\/a> levels in the blood) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21326271\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It also reduced inflammation in rats with swollen feet, especially when combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/liver-health-foods-supplements-good-bad-liver\/#Eugenol\">eugenol<\/a> (a compound found in the essential oils of clove, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-15-proven-scientific-reasons-spice-life-cinnamon-references\/\">cinnamon<\/a>, nutmeg, basil, and bay leaf) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7702364\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Two small clinical trials and a rat study are not sufficient evidence to back the anti-inflammatory effect of cod liver oil.<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Larger, more robust clinical trials are needed.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Preventing_and_Fighting_Infections\"><b>9) Preventing and Fighting Infections<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a study of 94 infants and children (6 months to 5 years old), those given cod liver oil had <b>fewer pediatric visits for upper respiratory tract infections<\/b> (1 tsp cod liver oil\/day). Children given cod liver oil and a multivitamin also had fewer visits for sinus issues in a small study on 4 male children [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15562899\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15126020\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cod liver oil supplements helped mice fight pneumonia [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23826960\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice with a <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vitamin-e-can-help-fertility-pregnancy\/\">vitamin E<\/a> deficiency,<b> cod liver oil was extremely effective against multiple parasites <\/b>(<i>P Plasmodium yoelii, Babesia rodhaini, Trypanosoma congolense, and Trypanosoma vivax<\/i>). A study on almost 10,000 people associated its intake with lower blood pressure but another one on almost 57,000 failed to find this link [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11507963\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3924237\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rats, cod liver oil lowered blood pressure in those with high but not normal values [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/4084253\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/4026202\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>All in all, two small clinical trials and two studies in rats cannot be considered sufficient evidence that cod liver oil lowers blood pressure and the evidence of its preventive role is contradictory.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Further clinical research is needed to determine whether cod liver oil helps lower high blood pressure.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"11_Cancer_Prevention\"><b>11) Cancer Prevention<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a study that interviewed over 2000 women, <b>those who took the most cod liver oil between ages 10-19 were least likely to develop <\/b>breast cancer. However, the likelihood was not reduced as much with cod liver oil taken between ages 20-29, and not at all with cod liver oil taken between ages 45-54 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17372236\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a questionnaire involving over 68,000 people, daily use of cod liver oil for a year was <b>associated with a lower risk of death in those with solid tumors and lung cancer<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19444919\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Note, however, that these two studies associated high cod liver oil intake with a reduced incidence and mortality of these cancer types but didn\u2019t establish its role at <i>preventing <\/i>them. Other genetic and environmental factors could have influenced cancer frequency.<\/p>\n<p>In rats, a combination of cod liver oil with a potential anti-cancer compound, DIM (3,3\u02b9-<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/diindolylmethane-dim\/\">Diindolylmethane<\/a>), and vitamin E <b>slowed the growth rate of tumor cells.<\/b> Further research in humans is needed before cod liver oil can be considered in anticancer therapy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24980762\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Ineffective_for\"><b>Possibly Ineffective for:<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"12_Lowering_Cholesterol\"><b>12) Lowering Cholesterol<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cod liver oil <b>increased <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\"><b>HDL<\/b><\/a><b> cholesterol levels and decreased bad cholesterol <\/b>(VLDL) <b>and<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\"><b>triglycerides<\/b><\/a> levels in 18 patients with diabetes and kidney problems (albuminuria). <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a> levels were unaffected by cod liver oil [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2685599\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 34 subjects, <b>men and women responded differently<\/b> to 8 weeks of 25 mL daily cod liver oil. In women, levels of LDL <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a> decreased, but in men, they increased.
