It may also act as a mood enhancer, but the research is limited. Read on to learn the health effects, dosage, and dangers of ibogaine.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Ibogaine\"><a id=\"post-45903-_rxc1f68b2zi5\"><\/a><strong>What is Ibogaine?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>Disclaimer<\/em><\/strong><em>: Ibogaine is classified as a Schedule I substance. This means that it is an illegal drug with high potential for harm and no approved medical uses. We highly advise against the use of ibogaine until future studies determine its safety and efficacy in medically-supervised and safe settings. The only aim of this post is to outline the research findings.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ibogaine is a <strong>psychoactive<\/strong> alkaloid derived from the root bark of some plants found in the West African rainforest (<em>Tabernanthe iboga<\/em>, <em>Voacanga africana,<\/em> and <em>Tabernaemontana undulata<\/em>). It has been traditionally used by tribes in Central Africa in ceremonies and religious rituals for its energizing and aphrodisiac properties [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=ex+vivo+ibogaine\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Because of safety concerns, ibogaine is currently <strong>banned<\/strong> in the United States, Australia, and many European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland. It is legal in several other countries, including Canada and Mexico, where it\u2019s mainly used for addiction treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18029124\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4888945\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Components\"><a id=\"post-45903-_mpueltbfo5ya\"><\/a><strong>Components<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ibogaine, when consumed, is broken down in the liver and gut wall into <strong>noribogaine<\/strong> (12-hydroxyibogamine) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9698290\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ibogaine and noribogaine have similar properties, but noribogaine remains in the body longer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25279818\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Both ibogaine and noribogaine readily cross the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/blood-brain-barrier-causes-tests-leaky-brain\/\"> blood-brain barrier<\/a> and are in higher concentrations in the brain tissue compared to the bloodstream [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8880938?access_num=8880938&amp;link_type=MED&amp;dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Mechanism_of_Action\"><a id=\"post-45903-_h3neg6s0z5w6\"><\/a><strong>Mechanism of Action<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The mechanism of action of ibogaine remains unclear. Some of its effects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inhibition of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-serotonin\"><strong>serotonin<\/strong><\/a><strong> transporters<\/strong>: Ibogaine inhibits the reabsorption of serotonin from serotonin transporters, an action similar to many <strong>antidepressants<\/strong>, such as fluoxetine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11303040\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inhibition of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dopamine\/\"><strong>dopamine<\/strong><\/a><strong> transporters<\/strong>: Ibogaine has the same effects on dopamine transporters, resulting in higher dopamine levels. Dopamine levels in addicted individuals are altered due to the excessive use of abused drugs, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cocaine\/\">cocaine<\/a>. Ibogaine can reset the dopamine levels to pre-addiction levels, without leading to a new addiction [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22451652\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inhibition of nicotinic<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/acetylcholine\/\"><strong> acetylcholine<\/strong><\/a><strong> receptors<\/strong>: These receptors are part of the neuronal pathway that modulates the brain\u2019s reward system. Because of this, they are involved in the mechanism of addiction. Ibogaine blocks nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, thereby maintaining healthy levels of acetylcholine for longer periods of time [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11906717\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20684041\"> R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inhibition of NMDA receptors<\/strong>: Ibogaine blocks NMDA receptors, which accounts for its hallucinogenic effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7473163\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opioid receptors<\/strong>: Although ibogaine and noribogaine bind to opioid receptors, they do not block them. This may explain why ibogaine does not reduce<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\"> pain<\/a> sensations but enhances the pain-relieving effects of morphine. Also, when used in high doses for opioid<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-science-of-detoxification\/\"> detoxification<\/a>, it does not produce signs of overdose in people who are not addicted to <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/why-the-ice-bucket-challenge-is-so-popular-it-functions-like-heroin\/\">opioids<\/a> and cannot tolerate them [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=THE+IBOGAINE+MEDICAL+SUBCULTURE\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3818563\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Effects_of_Ibogaine\"><a id=\"post-45903-_a8o047h6bdjv\"><\/a><strong>Effects of Ibogaine<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>It illegal to possess or consume ibogaine in the US, Australia, and many European countries. The use of ibogaine can be unsafe, potentially leading to psychotic breaks, changes in heart rate, and even death. Below is a summary of its effects outlined for informational purposes, which in no way supports the use of this substance.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Relieving_Addictions\"><a id=\"post-45903-_2f05qbh9yx21\"><\/a><strong>1) Relieving Addictions<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ibogaine was first introduced as an addiction treatment in 1962 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11705114\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It reduces opioid use and withdrawal symptoms and stops drug cravings. In contrast to other drug therapies, such as methadone maintenance treatment, even a single dose of ibogaine may lead to opioid detoxification lasting up to 12 months post-treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28402682\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a recent observational study, a single ibogaine treatment was administered to 14 opioid addicts. Ibogaine inhibits the activity of enzymes called lipases, which are used by Candida albicans to infect human cells. Therefore, when combined with a commonly used antibiotic, it suppressed fungus development [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=ibogaine+reduces+organ+colonization\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, ibogaine has antimycobacterial activity, as shown by the reduction of bacterial cultures of several pathogenic microorganisms [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9626931\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Finally, experiments conducted on human blood cells showed that ibogaine interrupts the replication of retroviruses (such as HIV-1), and blocks the infection process [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=ANTI+HIV+1+IBOGA\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Ibogaine_Side_Effects\"><a id=\"post-45903-_2cg7e52hcptn\"><\/a><strong>Ibogaine Side Effects<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>If you have been exposed to ibogaine and experience poisoning, urgently contact a poison control center near you (call 1-800-222-1222).<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Ataxia_and_Vomiting\"><a id=\"post-45903-_7ygioa838j8\"><\/a><strong>1) Ataxia and Vomiting<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Two of the most commonly reported side-effects of ibogaine is involuntary and uncontrollable movement (<strong>ataxia<\/strong>) and <strong>vomiting<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23627782\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Cardiac_ArrestArrhythmia\"><a id=\"post-45903-_2lev0adjujdg\"><\/a><strong>2) Cardiac Arrest\/Arrhythmia<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ibogaine can cause direct damage to the heart muscle or disrupt the electrical activity of the heart. In both humans and animals, high doses of ibogaine <strong>decreased the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/resting-heart-rate\/\"><strong>heart rate<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It does so by blocking the activity of an ion channel (ERG<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/potassium\/\"> potassium<\/a> channel), which transports electrical signals in the heart cells and regulates the beating of the human heart. This, in turn, results in <strong>arrhythmia <\/strong>(<strong>abnormal heart rhythm<\/strong>) and a high probability of <strong>sudden death<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22458604\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Consumption of ibogaine should be accompanied with heart monitoring since it has been proposed that this arrhythmia could be treated with the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/21-proven-science-based-reasons-magnesium-amazing-including-drawbacks\/\">magnesium<\/a> and anti-bradycardia pacing [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28402682\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Sudden_Death\"><a id=\"post-45903-_pg2ns4w62m52\"><\/a><strong>3) Sudden Death<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Several deaths have been reported to be attributed to the use of ibogaine. However, some of these fatalities may be due to preexisting medical conditions, such as heart disease or drug use during treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22268458\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22458604\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24112325\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Mania\"><a id=\"post-45903-_pvnt8qcm2dgl\"><\/a><strong>4) Mania<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There have been 3 reported cases where the use of ibogaine, either for self-treatment of addictions or psycho-spiritual experimentation, resulted in <strong>mania<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25877487\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Psychosis\"><a id=\"post-45903-_dxnjqc5iadh5\"><\/a><strong>5) Psychosis<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There has been 1 case in which ibogaine worsened symptoms of <strong>schizophrenia<\/strong> and induced <strong>psychotic episodes<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21881451\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Seizures\"><a id=\"post-45903-_inlqzps9piwm\"><\/a><strong>6) Seizures<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Although ibogaine has been widely suggested to reduce epileptic seizures, there have been reports of <strong>whole-body tremors<\/strong> and <strong>epileptic<\/strong> <strong>seizures<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22268458\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This difference could be due to the dose-dependent mechanism of action of ibogaine. In higher doses (35 mg\/kg), ibogaine could trigger epileptic seizures, while in lower doses it generally has an anticonvulsant (anti-seizure) effect [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=HERBAL+SEIZURES+IBOGAINE\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Neurotoxicity\"><a id=\"post-45903-_p7lal4prnmmz\"><\/a><strong>7) Neurotoxicity<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The administration of ibogaine has resulted in <strong>neuronal degeneration<\/strong> of Purkinje cells in the rat brain. The Purkinje cells are some of the largest neurons forming the human brain and are located in the cerebellum. This <strong>brain toxicity<\/strong> was observed at doses higher than the ones used for invoking its anti-addictive properties (50 to 100 mg\/kg) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10966515\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, noribogaine is considered less toxic to the nervous system than ibogaine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26807959\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, the neurotoxic effects of ibogaine have only been verified on rats and no research has been done in humans yet.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Drug_Interactions\"><a id=\"post-45903-_5b3022wxfr6\"><\/a><strong>Drug Interactions<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Substance-drug interactions can be dangerous and, in rare cases, even life-threatening. Always consult your doctor before taking an illegal substance and let them know about all drugs and supplements you are using or considering.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ibogaine is partly broken down by the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cyp2d6\/\"> <strong>CYP2D6<\/strong><\/a><strong> enzyme<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25642835\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>This enzyme is responsible for the metabolism of many other substances in the human body. This similar route of metabolism may lead to dangerous drug interactions, which may increase the heart cell toxicity effects of ibogaine and enhance its side effects.<\/p>\n<p>Some substances that could dangerously interact with ibogaine are [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25642835\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alcohol<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Cocaine<\/li>\n<li>Methadone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Dosage\"><a id=\"post-45903-_t8y8zm1qqlrc\"><\/a><strong>Dosage<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>There is no safe dosage for ibogaine, since it is an unapproved drug that poses a significant safety risk. Below is a summary of the dosages used in scientific research, outlined for informational purposes. We highly advise against the use of unapproved substances such as ibogaine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The doses commonly used for opioid detoxification is in the range of <strong>1 to 2 g<\/strong>, More specifically, it has been administered as a single oral dose in the range of <strong>10 to 25 mg\/kg<\/strong> of body weight [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=THE+IBOGAINE+MEDICAL+SUBCULTURE\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10506904\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11705106\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ibogaine was well tolerated with no adverse effects when administered in very low doses of <strong>20 mg<\/strong> in one Phase I study (21 healthy participants) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25651476\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a Phase I study (ascending single-dose, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel group) was conducted to test the safety and toxicity of noribogaine. Single doses of <strong>3 to 60 mg<\/strong> of noribogaine were administered to 36 healthy drug-free volunteers and no adverse effects were observed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25279818\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Genetics\"><a id=\"post-45903-_x2caoge6j5cx\"><\/a>Genetics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Genetic variations found within the gene that expresses the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cyp2d6\/\"> CYP2D6<\/a> enzyme affect the enzyme\u2019s activity. Although there are no studies yet testing its safety on humans, data from animal studies are very promising. 18-MC has all the <strong>anti-addictive properties of ibogaine<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11085336\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similar to ibogaine, 18-MC reduces the self-administration of several drugs of abuse in rats (morphine, cocaine, alcohol, and nicotine). It also <strong>improves opioid withdrawal symptoms<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11085336\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, 18-MC <strong>does not produce the unwanted neuronal and heart cell toxicity<\/strong> related to ibogaine.
