However, it may have other uses on its own. Read on to learn about how <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> may protect against Parkinson\u2019s disease, improve <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">depression<\/a>, and protect the brain.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Banisteriopsis_caapi\"><a id=\"post-45380-_we8ay6qyckgb\"><\/a><strong>What Is <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em>?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> (<em>B. caapi<\/em>) is a plant that is used throughout the Amazonian region alone or in combination with <em>Psychotria viridis<\/em> to form ayahuasca [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19004422\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23653088\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Ayahuasca is a hallucinogen commonly used in some South American indigenous rituals. However, some shamans and churches in the region use <em>Banisteriopsis caapi <\/em>without <em>Psychotria viridis<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/02791072.2005.10399790\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19004422\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> has components that inhibit MAO-A and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-serotonin\">serotonin<\/a> uptake [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10404423\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Indigenous_Use\"><a id=\"post-45380-_vqe5u91atrpe\"><\/a><strong>Indigenous Use<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Piaroa are an ethnic group located in southern Venezuela who use <em>Banisteriopsis caapi <\/em>(known as tuhuip\u00e4 or capi) for a variety of purposes. Unlike other Amazonian societies, the Piaroa do not use <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> to make ayahuasca [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19004422\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Instead, shamans consume the cambium, or the elbow of the plant, 1 to 6 hours before smoking another psychoactive plant called yuhu\u00e4 or yopo. Shamans typically use <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> during ceremonies, for both healing and ritual purposes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19004422\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>When taken alone, shamans say that <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> helps enhance people\u2019s empathy, allowing them to give guidance in the community [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19004422\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It is also used in Piaroa society as a [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19004422\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-10-ways-to-curb-your-hunger-and-approaches-that-didnt-work\/\">Hunger<\/a> suppressant<\/li>\n<li>Stimulant<\/li>\n<li>Hunting aid (improving vision)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Importantly, the antidepressant effect of <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> and its widespread use throughout Piaroa society may have helped promote and maintain their social stability [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19004422\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Components\"><a id=\"post-45380-_3jj8x2uxobob\"><\/a><strong>Components<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-45380-_3sbsw2ruaenq\"><\/a><strong>Alkaloids<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The three main alkaloids in <em>Banisteriopsis caapi,<\/em> known as beta-carbolines or harmala alkaloids, are <strong>harmine, tetrahydroharmine, and harmaline<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26976063\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The alkaloids are MAO inhibitors and responsible for <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em>\u2019s potential brain enhancement, antioxidant, antidepressant, and anti-Parkinson\u2019s effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20219660\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28706205\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19879939\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12895680\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One study identified additional alkaloids: banistenoside A, banistenoside B, and harmol [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20219660\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-45380-_7fg27sit3a2n\"><\/a><strong>Proanthocyanidins<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Two other active components are antioxidant flavanols known as proanthocyanidins: <strong>epicatechin and procyanidin B2<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20219660\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>These are also partly responsible for <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/maob\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">MAO-B<\/a> inhibition [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20219660\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19879939\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Natural_Sources_and_Resin\"><a id=\"post-45380-_c6fhvfgj5hf0\"><\/a><strong>Natural Sources and Resin<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> can be consumed in multiple ways. The <strong>dried bark of its large branch<\/strong> contains the highest concentrations of banistenoside A, banistenoside B, <strong>tetrahydroharmine<\/strong>,<strong> harmine<\/strong>,<strong> epicatechin<\/strong>,<strong> and procyanidin B2 <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20219660\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> <strong>stems can be used to make tea<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28706205\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> supplements are sold as a resin extract, resin liquid, or as the vine, itself. Note, however, that <strong>they are not approved by the FDA for any conditions due to the lack of solid clinical research<\/strong>. Regulations set manufacturing standards for supplements but don&#8217;t guarantee that they&#8217;re safe or effective. The effects appeared after one hour and lasted for 3 more hours [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/234017570_Effects_of_Banisteriopsis_caapi_extract_on_Parkinson's_disease\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, all <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> patients experienced adverse effects<\/strong>. They all experienced nausea\/vomiting and abnormal, involuntary movements and tremors. Additionally, most of them also reported dizziness, diarrhea, and agitation, and one patient experienced confusion\/hallucinations [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/234017570_Effects_of_Banisteriopsis_caapi_extract_on_Parkinson's_disease\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rat brain cells, the harmaline and harmine from <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> stem extracts inhibited MAO-A. This suggests that these beta-carbolines may<strong> increase<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/increasing-dopamine-can-make-successful\/\"><strong> dopamine<\/strong><\/a><strong> levels<\/strong>, which are lower in Parkinson\u2019s disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12895680\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Banisteriopsis caapi <\/em>and other MAO-B inhibitors also fight motor symptoms and problems found in Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/strong> based on animal studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26585523\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15890481\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29368409\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In both human and animal cells, harmine and harmaline strongly inhibit human MAO-B enzymes while epicatechin and procyanidin B2 do so moderately [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19879939\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, in rat brain cells, beta-carbolines did not significantly inhibit MAO-B [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12895680\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mouse cells, <strong>harmaline and harmine reduced brain damage<\/strong> from various toxins (MPTP and MPP+) that cause Parkinson\u2019s-like symptoms in humans and other primates. Based on this model, these <strong>beta-carbolines may slow down Parkinson\u2019s progression by protecting the brain against oxidative cell damage <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10899927\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, a small clinical trial and some animal and cell research cannot be considered conclusive evidence that <em>Banisteriopsis caapi <\/em>improves Parkinson\u2019s disease. Larger, more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Depression_and_Anxiety\"><a id=\"post-45380-_eb43rcm17ezo\"><\/a><strong>2) Depression and Anxiety<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 2 small trials on 12 people, a single dose of ayahuasca helped improve both depression and anxiety. In another trial on 9 people, it reduced panic and hopelessness but had no effects on state- or trait-anxiety [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25806551\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26650973\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17532158\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Chemical analyses of <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> suggest that this plant may be responsible for some of the antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects of ayahuasca. The harmine and harmaline in <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> inhibit MAO-A, while tetrahydroharmine moderately inhibits serotonin reuptake. These two mechanisms may reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">depression<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19879939\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26049017\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice, harmine from <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> had antidepressant effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16183262\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In fish, exposure to infused ayahuasca reduced anxiety [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28804451\">R<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, harmine stimulated the birth of brain cells (by increasing BDNF levels) and reduced depressive behavior in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19632287\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Harmaline, harmine, tetrahydroharmine, and harmol (a by-product of harmaline) caused adult nerve cell formation (neurogenesis) in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28706205\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the birth of brain cells (neurogenesis) helped fight <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\"> depression<\/a> in animal studies, This activity resembles antidepressant drugs that stimulate neurogenesis in the hippocampus and other regions of the brain [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25833129\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28706205\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25583694\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19606083\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17311541\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The evidence to support the use of Banisteriopsis caapi for depression and anxiety comes from 3 small trials (which didn\u2019t even test the plant alone but as part of ayahuasca) and some animal and cell-based research. Further clinical research is required to shed some light on this potential benefit.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lack_of_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-45380-_t2rsbmsoorg0\"><\/a><strong>Animal Research (Lack of Evidence)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>Banisteriopsis caapi <\/em>to enhance and protect brain function. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Brain_Enhancer_and_an_Antioxidant\"><a id=\"post-45380-_19gmjd1nvct6\"><\/a><strong>Brain Enhancer and an Antioxidant<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In mouse brains, harmine, tetrahydroharmine, harmaline, and harmol stimulated [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28706205\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Neurogenesis<\/li>\n<li>Stem cell growth, migration, and production<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to a review of 2 animal cells and 9 animal studies, <strong>harmine increased<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\"><strong>BDNF<\/strong><\/a><strong> and protected the brain<\/strong>. It decreased [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27918874\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inflammation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">Oxidative stress<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Nerve cell damage and death due to overactivation of receptors (excitotoxicity)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Furthermore, it improved memory and learning in animals [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27918874\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In cells, epicatechin and procyanidin from <em>Banisteriopsis caapi<\/em> acted as antioxidants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20219660\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice, beta-carbolines reduced brain damage caused by dopamine and the Parkinson\u2019s-like toxins MPTP and MPP+ [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10899927\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects\"><a id=\"post-45380-_st78bsgjdd82\"><\/a><strong>Side Effects<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Keep in mind that the safety profile of <em>Banisteriopsis caapi <\/em>is relatively unknown, given the lack of well-designed clinical studies.
