The causes are unknown, but it is widely believed that stomach cramps and other digestive issues play a key role.<\/p>\n<p>A meta-analysis of 17 studies and a review of 14 clinical trials of supplements for gut disorders concluded that fennel (either as an oil, a tea, or an herbal compound) was effective in treating babies with infantile colic [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26655941\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28562281\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study with 125 infants, <strong>fennel seed oil eliminated colic in 65% of infants<\/strong>, compared to an improvement of only 24% in the placebo group [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12868253\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\"><a id=\"post-44409-_kw7tttyao47a\"><\/a>Insufficient Evidence For:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Improving_StomachGut_Discomfort\"><a id=\"post-44409-_pbn0equq5psn\"><\/a><strong>2) Improving Stomach\/Gut Discomfort<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Fennel has a long history of being used to treat a variety of gut and digestive problems, including stomach aches, flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, at this point in time, there is insufficient evidence to support these benefits.<\/p>\n<p>In a study with 121 people who had<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-ibs-general-gut-dysfunction\/\"> <strong>Irritable Bowel Syndrome<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-ibs-general-gut-dysfunction\/\">IBS<\/a>), a mixture of fennel and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/curcumin-cures-top-15-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-with-references\/\"> curcumin<\/a> essential oils decreased abdominal pain and improved quality of life [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27308645\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Anethole, a major component of essential fennel oil, improved stomach function and emptying in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26915803\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fennel extract <strong>prevented stomach ulcers <\/strong>caused by alcohol in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17278229\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A small trial that used fennel in a mixture with curcumin and a couple of animal studies cannot be considered sufficient evidence that fennel improves gut discomfort. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to shed light on any potential benefits when it comes to gut health.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Alleviating_Menstrual_Pain\"><a id=\"post-44409-_nnvouut5la6w\"><\/a><strong>3) Alleviating Menstrual Pain<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Fennel was found to alleviate menstrual pain in 30 women reporting particularly painful periods <\/strong>(dysmenorrhea). This effect kicked in between 30 &#8211; 120 minutes after taking it. However, 5 women withdrew from this study due to finding its odor unpleasant, and one woman reported a mild increase in the amount of menstrual flow [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12566188\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A combination of fennel extract\/<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vitamin-e-can-help-fertility-pregnancy\/\">vitamin E<\/a> was more effective than ibuprofen in decreasing the intensity of menstrual pain in a study with 68 female students [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24403936\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study of 80 young women, fennel capsules reduced period-related nausea and improved subjective well-being compared to placebo [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25085020\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Studies are promising but few and of low quality. Larger trials are needed to establish if fennel is beneficial when it comes to alleviating menstrual pain.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Reducing_PMS\"><a id=\"post-44409-_9muw7oz1dif7\"><\/a><strong>4) Reducing PMS<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There is a single study in which this herb reduced the severity of symptoms in 90 young women with moderate to severe<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/relieve-pms-naturally\/\"> PMS<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23926506\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other studies are needed to corroborate this effect.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Reducing_Menopause_Symptoms\"><a id=\"post-44409-_e1ibw7o9ay71\"><\/a><strong>5) Reducing Menopause Symptoms<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Menopause is often accompanied by symptoms such as hot flashes, sweating, heart discomfort,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\"> sleep<\/a> problems, depression, irritability, fatigue,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\"> anxiety<\/a>, sexual problems, and joint and muscle discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>In a triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 90 women, <strong>fennel effectively reduced menopausal symptoms<\/strong> without serious side effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28509813\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, more studies are needed to confirm fennel is effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Unwanted_Hair_Growth_in_Women\"><a id=\"post-44409-_jielfshusjae\"><\/a><strong>6) Unwanted Hair Growth in Women<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes, women with regular menstrual cycles and normal levels of male hormones can experience unwanted hair growth, a condition known as <em>hirsutism<\/em> (for example, inappropriate facial hair growth).<\/p>\n<p>While the underlying causes are not yet known, fennel has shown potential in reversing this distressing condition.<\/p>\n<p>For example, fennel gels and creams applied directly to the affected areas of the skin reduced hair growth and hair thickness in a DB-RCT of 44 women and in another study of 38 women [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24490010\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/13678227\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, larger, well-designed trials are needed to establish that fennel is beneficial for this condition.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Anxiety_and_Depression\"><a id=\"post-44409-_og3vlggsxfvy\"><\/a><strong>7) Anxiety and Depression<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a DB-RCT of 60 post-menopausal women, <strong>fennel showed borderline significant improvement in treating anxiety and depression<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28891367\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fennel essential oil decreased anxiety in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25149087\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Further human studies with a larger sample size are required to confirm whether fennel has any actual effect on these conditions.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Reducing_Appetite\"><a id=\"post-44409-_gfwuuhu5ygaj\"><\/a><strong>8) Reducing Appetite<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 9 healthy overweight women, fennel tea decreased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-10-ways-to-curb-your-hunger-and-approaches-that-didnt-work\/\"> hunger<\/a> and increased the feeling of fullness [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26251835\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, this study is small and insufficient to draw any conclusions. Future studies will hopefully clarify if fennel indeed has an effect on appetite.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Improving_Skin_Health\"><a id=\"post-44409-_kkntuw8vywcu\"><\/a><strong>9) Improving Skin Health<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A cream containing fennel extract <strong>improved skin texture and increased skin water content<\/strong> in 11 volunteers [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22393831\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fennel extract may prevent the visible effects of skin aging that come from<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/avoiding-sun-will-kill-14-proven-science-based-health-benefits-sun\/\"> sun<\/a> exposure. For example, it increased the production of collagen, elastin, and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tgf\/\">TGF-beta<\/a>1 levels in mice exposed to UVB radiation. Furthermore, it dose-dependently decreased the production of reactive oxygen species (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">ROS<\/a>) by increasing Nrf2 and antioxidants such as GSH [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27765346\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cell studies have also found that fennel and trans-anethole also lighten the skin and may prevent skin blemishes by blocking<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/avoiding-sun-will-kill-14-proven-science-based-health-benefits-sun\/\"> UV<\/a>-induced melanin production (melanogenesis) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27712859\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additional, preferably larger human studies are needed to explore the potential benefits of fennel on skin health.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-44409-_e2sbx25rxvqh\"><\/a>Lacking Evidence:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of fennel for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing human, animal, and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts.
