The term \u201ctrace amine\u201d refers to the fact that it is found at much lower concentrations than other amines [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/623853\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcresearchpress.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1139\/o73-129?journalCode=cjbio#.WfnHDhO0OHo\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Phenethylamine is produced in tiny amounts throughout the brain and spinal cord and is made from the essential amino acid <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/9-health-benefits-phenylalanine\/\">phenylalanine<\/a>, which is mainly found in protein-rich foods [<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1471-4159.1974.tb11581.x\/full\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It is metabolized by the enzymes monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) and aldehyde dehydrogenase to phenylacetic acid, which is then excreted in the urine [<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1471-4159.1980.tb11267.x\/abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Phenethylamine supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use. Neurotransmitters send chemical signals to different targets in the body causing various responses e.g., happy, sad, scared, awake [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15228583\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18182557\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li>Activating TAAR-1, phenethylamine increases the release of serotonin, epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/norepinephrine-stress-hormone\/\">norepinephrine<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/norepinephrine-stress-hormone\/\">noradrenaline<\/a>) from neurons. This is uncertain.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Uses_of_Phenethylamine\">Potential Uses of Phenethylamine<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\">Insufficient Evidence For:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The following purported uses are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There is insufficient evidence to support the use of phenethylamine for <\/em><em>any of the below-listed uses. Remember to speak with a doctor before taking phenethylamine supplements, which should never be used as a replacement for approved medical therapies<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Mood\"><b>1) Mood<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Phenethylamine increases dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Increasing these neurotransmitters in certain brain areas may, in theory, promote a positive mood and lead to a greater sense of well-being. However, <strong>there is insufficient evidence to claim that phenethylamine improves mood<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8666050\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Limited research suggests that depressed individuals may have decreased phenylethylamine brain levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7711493\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/436296\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6857245\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6597458\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3944066\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some studies have shown that phenethylamine and phenylacetic acid, a byproduct of phenethylamine, are decreased in depressed patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7711493\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one study (prospective cohort) of 14 depressed patients with major depressive episodes, 60 mg of phenethylamine combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/selegiline\/\">selegiline<\/a> (a monoamine oxidase inhibitor that blocks the enzyme that breaks down phenethylamine) reduced symptoms of depression in 12 patients over the course of 50 weeks [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9081552\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study, 9 out of 10 depressed patients that previously did not respond to conventional antidepressant treatments reported elevated mood after taking a combination of phenethylamine and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/selegiline\/\">selegiline<\/a>. The sample size of this study prevents us from drawing any conclusions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1900832\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Limited studies suggest that people with depression may have lower phenethylamine brain levels, but the purported benefits of supplementation remain unproven.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Schizophrenia\"><b>2) Schizophrenia<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The role of phenethylamine in schizophrenia is still unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Excess phenethylamine in the urine of patients with specific types of schizophrenia has been reported, indicating it is being removed the body at an increased rate [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2535427\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/504988\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One study in schizophrenic patients found lower amounts of phenethylamine and its metabolite, phenylacetic acid, in cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6134517\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The altered levels of phenethylamine may play a role in schizophrenia by increasing or decreasing dopamine levels. An increase in dopamine levels is often seen in patients with schizophrenia [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7906896\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Phenylethylamine activates a receptor (TAAR-1) in the brain that decreases the symptoms associated with schizophrenia in rodents [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18182557\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22641180\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Further studies are needed.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_ADHD_Symptoms\"><b>3) ADHD Symptoms<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>More evidence is needed to rate phenethylamine for attention disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to patients with depression, children and adults with ADHD may have decreased levels of phenylethylamine. However, only limited evidence supports this theory [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaacap.com\/article\/S0002-7138(09)60509-4\/abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2001444\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12030014\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>ADHD is a behavioral problem, mostly in children and teenagers, characterized by short attention spans. While ADHD is usually diagnosed by observing behavior, some scientists are researching whether measuring phenylethylamine in urine samples might also be useful [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23021477\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study, patients who experienced a decrease in symptoms after taking methylphenidate for ADHD had increased phenylethylamine levels. Phenethylamine is therefore sometimes referred to as the \u201clove drug,\u201d though clinical trials are completely lacking [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8653411\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1313243\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>6) Weight Control<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Clinical evidence is lacking to rate the effects on phenethylamine on weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are investigating whether phenethylamine can curb appetite, increase metabolism, and affect weight loss based on its influence on neurotransmitter levels. None of these strategies should ever be done in place of what your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Exercise\"><b>1) Exercise<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-14-proven-health-benefits-exercise-references-mechanisms\/\">Exercise<\/a> may improve mood and it has been linked to increased brain phenethylamine in limited studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC474733\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1724404\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>As such, some say phenethylamine may be responsible for the effect known as \u201crunner\u2019s high.&#8221; This has yet to be confirmed, though.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Chocolate_and_Other_Foods\"><b>2) Chocolate and Other Foods<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Phenethylamine is found in chocolate, especially dark chocolate [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1413998\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It is also found in fermented foods including some cheeses, certain red wines, and sausage [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9325578\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/0308814681900017\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19781707\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21645711\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/jsfa.2740260505\/abstract\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19643426\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21337238\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1365-2621.1978.tb15279.x\/abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Phenethylamine can be used to indicate food quality and freshness since large amounts of phenethylamine are produced by bacteria [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23265518\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some studies have found phenethylamine in chicken and fish and suggest this may be because of bacterial contamination [<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/jf020015b?journalCode=jafcau\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S002196730400055X\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The phenethylamine in chocolate may, in theory, explain its reputation as an aphrodisiac (a substance that increases libido) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16681473\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, some scientists hypothesize that chocolate cravings may, in fact, be an attempt by the body to \u201cself-medicate,&#8221; increasing phenethylamine levels and improving mood [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3625189\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7972390\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, cheese and sausage also contain phenethylamine but do not have the same reputation for causing cravings. Chocolate also has small amounts of other stimulants like <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/caffeine-benefits\/\">caffeine<\/a> and theobromine [<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1365-2621.1980.tb02603.x\/abstract\">R<\/a>]. These could also be responsible for the mood-enhancing effects.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Getting regular exercise and eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate might be healthy ways of supporting mood and increasing phenethylamine, studies suggest.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Supplements\"><b>3) Supplements<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Phenethylamine\u2019s effect is limited when supplemented orally because it is likely quickly broken down in the body by the enzyme monoamine oxidase <\/b>[<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1471-4159.1980.tb11267.x\/abstract\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Research suggests that phenethylamine passes easily through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Studies in dogs suggest that phenethylamine had a very short half-life (5 to 10 minutes) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23389662\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In addition, phenethylamine injected intravenously in rats was absorbed mainly by the lungs, liver, and kidneys, and less than 1% reached the brain [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcresearchpress.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1139\/o75-007#.Wg1jvxO0OHo\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Despite the lack of effectiveness and safety data, dietary supplements are widely available. The salt form, phenylethylamine HCL, is the most common phenylethylamine supplement, and phenylethylamine powders and tablets are also sold.<\/p>\n<p>Slow-release versions of phenethylamine have been developed, designed to slowly release phenethylamine over time to prolong its effects. They have not been tested in clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p><b>There is no clinical evidence to support the efficacy of these supplements whatsoever. <\/b>User reports are mixed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Evidence is completely lacking to support the use of phenethylamine supplements.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Drugs_Made_from_Phenethylamine\"><b>Drugs Made from Phenethylamine<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Is_It_the_Same_as_MDMA\"><b>Is It the Same as MDMA?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No, phenethylamine is not the same as MDMA. MDMA is an illegal drug, listed under Schedule I substances by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Other well-known phenethylamines such as amphetamines are often sold illegally as street drugs.
