Read on to learn about self-diagnostic and prevention techniques.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Vasovagal_Syncope\"><a id=\"post-43681-_2fi2ro81unsl\"><\/a><strong>What Is Vasovagal Syncope?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Vasovagal syncope is a sudden but brief<strong> loss of consciousness<\/strong>. It is usually triggered by <strong>emotional distress<\/strong>, such as the sight of blood or a shocking event. These episodes may be isolated or recurrent [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC506859\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other common terms used to refer to syncope include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blackout spells<\/li>\n<li>Passing out<\/li>\n<li>Swooning<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fainting<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vasovagal syncope is also referred to as neurocardiogenic syncope [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC506859\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Types_of_Syncope\"><a id=\"post-43681-_pel8a3n4b7f6\"><\/a><strong>Types of Syncope<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are several reasons why someone might faint. Vasovagal is one of the most common types of fainting (about 50% of cases), together with orthostatic fainting (caused by low blood pressure) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25880404\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Types of fainting include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Classical vasovagal <\/strong>&#8211; Fainting occurs after emotionally distressing events, severe <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a> or prolonged standing [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1861366\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Situational <\/strong>&#8211; Fainting occurs immediately after urination, defecation, coughing, or swallowing [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1861366\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Orthostatic<\/strong> &#8211; Fainting occurs when blood pressure drops too low (hypotension) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1861366\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carotid sinus-related <\/strong>&#8211; The carotid sinus (located in the throat) is responsible for maintaining<strong> blood pressure<\/strong> in the body. A sensitive carotid sinus can cause a rapid decrease in blood pressure when stimulated by body movement or pressure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1397187\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK224\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heart ischemia-related<\/strong> &#8211; Fainting occurs with a quick drop of blood flow as a result of a heart attack [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1861366\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arrhythmia-related <\/strong>&#8211; Fainting occurs due to the improper beating of the heart &#8211; either too fast, too slow, or too irregular [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1861366\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why do we faint? In some cases, it is because of the low blood\/oxygen supply to the brain. The faint brings our body into a gravitationally neutral position, thereby offering a better chance of restoring brain blood supply and preserving brain function [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25662986\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5135249\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In other cases (such as after emotional distress), fainting protects the heart against too much sympathetic (fight-or-flight) activity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28669087\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Symptoms\"><a id=\"post-43681-_fpmdf4u557gv\"><\/a><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The symptoms we list here are commonly associated with vasovagal syncope but are insufficient for a diagnosis. Low dietary salt can lead to a lower blood volume and<strong> make the body more susceptible to fainting<\/strong>. However, more conclusive evidence is needed to clearly associate low dietary salt with an increased incidence of vasovagal syncope [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1768257\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Diagnosis\"><a id=\"post-43681-_1cmrxkx88ur8\"><\/a><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Common vasovagal syncope is diagnosed if the <strong>fainting event is associated with emotional distress, such as fear or<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\"><strong> pain<\/strong><\/a>. Prolonged standing can also cause fainting [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1861366\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Usually, syncope is diagnosed based on the patient&#8217;s fainting episode, medical history, physical examination, and blood tests [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3219519\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fainting episodes can either be one-time events or recurrent. They can even serve as a signal for more serious clinical disorders, such as allergies and diabetes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3219519\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>tilt table test<\/strong> is used to replicate and document fainting symptoms. Patients are usually strapped to a tilt table, then suspended upright while medical data is collected [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2998831\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>An<strong> implantable loop recorder<\/strong> can be surgically implanted under the skin to track heartbeat patterns. The recorder detects any abnormal heart rhythms during fainting events [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2998831\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The treadmill test is the newest method to diagnose syncope. Patients start walking at 1.7 mph at a flat incline. Speed and incline increase every 3 minutes and it ends after 30 minutes. After a 1-minute rest, the patient is administered nitroglycerin and medical data is collected [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28617840\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Vasovagal_Syncope_Can_Be_Misdiagnosed_as_a_Seizure\"><a id=\"post-43681-_gcokr0rl0sb5\"><\/a><strong>Vasovagal Syncope Can Be Misdiagnosed as a Seizure<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Vasovagal syncope is commonly <strong>misdiagnosed<\/strong> as an epileptic seizure due to occasional involuntary movements (myoclonic jerks) after fainting. However, fainting does not show the same responses as a seizure on different diagnostic tools (ECG, EEG, etc.) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1767616\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Syncope is caused by defects due to improper blood flow, while epileptic seizures are caused by defects in brain activity. Misdiagnosis can lead to improper treatment of the patient [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1767616\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Causes\"><a id=\"post-43681-_u88y5xfutwmf\"><\/a><strong>Causes<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many mechanisms have been suggested to cause fainting episodes, but these factors and their relative contributions are still not fully understood [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2998831\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Vasovagal syncope occurs by the activation of a heart reflex (hypotension\/bradycardia reflex) through the <strong>stimulation of the<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/28-ways-to-stimulate-your-vagus-nerve-and-all-you-need-to-know-about-it\/\"><strong>vagus nerve<\/strong><\/a>. This reflex causes a rapid decrease in heartbeat and widening of blood vessels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15480926\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/28-ways-to-stimulate-your-vagus-nerve-and-all-you-need-to-know-about-it\/\">vagus<\/a> nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes referred to as the rest-and-digest system [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4017164\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 23 children and adolescents (7-18 years), those with vasovagal syncope had significant imbalances in the involuntary control of their body (autonomic nervous system). A pilot trial on 37 people with serious, recurrent vasovagal syncope episodes showed that combining different strategies had a better effect than a single standard treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25880404\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Non-Pharmacologic_Treatments\"><a id=\"post-43681-_duzhwnae6bfz\"><\/a><strong>Non-Pharmacologic Treatments<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In most cases, the doctor will recommend the following measures aimed at reducing fainting recurrence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tilt training<\/strong>, timed sessions of upright posture against a wall, may be an effective treatment for syncope in highly motivated patients. In a study of 38 patients, 82% of the patients reported no syncope recurrence 1 year after the therapy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15121070\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12418741\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16216768\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Physical counter-maneuvers<\/strong> such as squatting, leg crossing, arm-tensing, and hand squeezing can help treat fainting by reducing blood pooling in the legs [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12475469\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4151906\/table\/T1\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower limb compression bandage<\/strong> places pressure on parts of the legs to increase blood flow [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9015662\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17045903\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Pharmacological_Treatments\"><a id=\"post-43681-_66dmzefp1otn\"><\/a><strong>Pharmacological Treatments<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A minority of patients will continue to have recurrent syncope despite these measures and may require medication [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24996861\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The drug most commonly used is <strong>fludrocortisone acetate<\/strong>, a synthetic steroid known as Florinef. In a clinical trial on over 200 vasovagal syncope patients, <strong>it reduced the incidence of fainting events<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27364043\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Drugs for high blood pressure and antidepressant SSRIs may also help, although most drugs tested so far turned out ineffective.<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 16 vasovagal syncope patients, <strong>midodrine <\/strong>(a hypertension drug), <strong>decreased the severity and frequency of syncope episodes <\/strong>without causing severe side effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9505918\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another trial on 68 syncope patients, <strong>paroxetine <\/strong>(an antidepressant\/SSRI better known as Paxil) <strong>significantly improved their symptoms<\/strong> even in those unresponsive or allergic to other traditional medications. However, Paxil <strong>failed to prevent syncope<\/strong> in another trial on 25 healthy people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10193720\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12234955\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Beta-blocker drugs (used to treat high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat) showed minimal benefits on patients with recurrent fainting. The European Society of Cardiology suggested stopping the usage of beta-blocker drugs for the treatment of syncope [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2998831\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12049374\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another trial on 96 vasovagal syncope patients, the SSRI fluoxetine (also known as Prozac or Sarafem) and the beta-blocker propranolol (a beta-blocker) were equally ineffective [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16627439\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Surgery\"><a id=\"post-43681-_jnsrvaix5m6d\"><\/a><strong>Surgery<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Very rarely, severe cases may require the placement of a pacemaker to regulate the heartbeat. A meta-analysis of <strong>pacemaker<\/strong> usage as a treatment for fainting showed a 17% reduction in fainting. However, the authors warned that many of the trials included were not properly controlled and may have overestimated the effectiveness of this measure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17208080\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Genes_Linked_to_Vasovagal_Syncope\"><a id=\"post-43681-_9sx8xw3iw7va\"><\/a><strong>Genes Linked to Vasovagal Syncope<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Research on the genetic causes of vasovagal fainting is limited, but the susceptibility to fainting may be inherited in some cases.
