It is involved in the development of reproductive organs, fertility, and pregnancy. It also serves as a diagnostic marker for a variety of body functions and conditions. Read on to learn more about the roles of inhibin, normal blood levels, and conditions associated with high and low levels of this hormone.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Inhibin\">What Is Inhibin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Inhibin is a hormone secreted in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/follicle-stimulating-hormone\/\">FSH<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3110772\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In turn, inhibin ultimately suppresses the production and release of FSH from the pituitary gland [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3136011\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Inhibin plays an important role in male and female reproductive development [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC305251\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1326766\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15319825\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Reproductive organs are the main source of inhibin, although it can also be found in the prostate, brain, and adrenal glands [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC279521\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Activin is another sex hormone that increases FSH and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gonadotropin-releasing-hormone\/\">gonadotropin-releasing hormone<\/a> (GnRH) production. Inhibins suppress this increase in FSH and GnRH by blocking the binding of activin to its receptors [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15319828\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There are two forms of inhibin, inhibin A and B [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4167436\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Inhibin_A_and_B\"><strong>Inhibin A and B<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inhibins are protein complexes with two units linked to each other. These are called inhibin A and B [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4167436\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Blood inhibin A and B levels vary throughout the menstrual cycle. Inhibin A levels are highest during the late follicular and luteal phases of a normal menstrual cycle, whereas inhibin B dominates in the early and mid follicular phases and declines in the late follicular phase [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10199780\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3918529\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>During the late luteal phase, inhibin A levels drop, allowing FSH levels to increase. This activity plays a role in the biological changes within a menstrual cycle [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3458167\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/4015638\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In contrast,<strong> males only produce inhibin B<\/strong>, which is produced in the testis by the Sertoli cells. Inhibin B production and secretion changes during the development of testis, and inhibin B increases or decreases the secretion of FSH depending on the sperm production process [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11720872\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Production\"><strong>Production<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>FSH stimulates the production of inhibin<\/strong> by the granulosa cells of the ovaries and the Sertoli cells of the testes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3059435\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other factors that increase inhibin production include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1beta<\/a> (for inhibin A) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11581011\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-truth-about-igf-1-top-10-benefits-and-potential-drawbacks\/\">IGF-1<\/a> (for inhibin A) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11866696\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Factors that reduce inhibin production include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-21-science-based-health-benefits-progesterone-4-drawbacks\/\">Progesterone<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3059435\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1<\/a> (for inhibin B) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15817831\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In females, inhibin secretion increases as the follicle matures. This enhances the activity of aromatase, the enzyme involved in the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\">estrogen<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3059435\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Roles_of_Inhibin\">Roles of Inhibin<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Maintains_Male_Reproductive_Function\"><strong>1) Maintains Male Reproductive Function<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inhibin B, which is produced in the testis by the Sertoli cells, is the <strong>active form of inhibin in men.<\/strong> As blood inhibin B levels increase, FSH levels decrease. Higher blood levels of inhibin B increase the number of Sertoli cells and sperm production in healthy fertile males [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8636325\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4167436\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>Sperm Production<\/h4>\n<p>Inhibin B is a marker of sperm production and male reproductive health. Blood inhibin levels were reduced in 104 men with various testicular disorders as compared to normal men [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7659145\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9398713\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a study with nearly 1,800 fertile men, elevated blood inhibin B levels were associated with increased sperm count and concentration [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20149358\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Supports_Female_Reproductive_Function\"><strong>2) Supports Female Reproductive Function<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In women, inhibins A and B have a different pattern of secretion throughout the menstrual cycle [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15618291\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Decreased inhibin B secretion decreases the ovarian follicular pool in women and leads to infertility [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15319822\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Also, inhibin levels during pregnancy are higher than those during a normal menstrual cycle [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9363237\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Because inhibins are produced by the placenta and fetal membranes, they may be used to diagnose fertility problems and early pregnancy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15618291\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A mutation in inhibin gene is associated with premature ovarian failure (POF). Decreased inhibin B levels were seen in women with declining ovarian reserve [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18566567\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10428149\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Women with low blood inhibin B levels also showed a reduced response to ovulation stimulation and a decreased chance of becoming pregnant, naturally or with assisted reproduction [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8986693\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Inhibins enhance the health and development of ovarian follicles. Higher levels of inhibin A and B in the follicular fluid also increase pregnancy rates [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15262355\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Impact_Bone_Formation\"><strong>3) Impact Bone Formation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The bone activity of removal and replacement of bone takes place throughout the body. Bone mass is maintained by a balance of bone formation and bone loss. Inhibin suppressed both of these activities in mice bone marrow [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19191758\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11751595\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Studies in menopausal women showed that increased inhibin B levels correlated with lower bone density [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16186077\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Low blood inhibin levels were associated with increased markers of bone formation and bone loss in pre- and perimenopausal women [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16449331\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, in mice, high levels of inhibin A increased bone mass and strength [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17194739\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_May_Be_Involved_in_Eye_Development\"><strong>4) May Be Involved in Eye Development<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the developing mouse eye, inhibin was seen in the lens and the cells between the lens and optic disc. It was also found in various cell layers of the retina. These results suggest that inhibin may be involved in the development of the retina [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9097033\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in the adult rat eye, a subunit of inhibin (\u03b1-subunit) was detected in cells of the retina that respond to light [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7596220\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_May_Reduce_Blood_Cell_Production\"><strong>5) May Reduce Blood Cell Production<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inhibins reduce human blood cell production by suppressing the activity of human bone marrow cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3696240\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Decreased production of bone marrow and splenic cells was seen after inhibin injection (in the vein) in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1426104\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Conditions_Associated_with_Low_Inhibin_Levels\">Conditions Associated with Low Inhibin Levels<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Inhibin levels are a marker of reproductive health. Low or high levels don\u2019t necessarily indicate a problem if there are no symptoms or if your doctor tells you not to worry about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Ectopic_Pregnancy\"><strong>1) Ectopic Pregnancy<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg attaches itself to sites other than the uterus. Reduced maternal blood inhibin levels were seen in ectopic pregnancies compared to normal pregnancies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8774307\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, another study found lower blood inhibin A levels in patients with ectopic pregnancies and abnormal pregnancies involving miscarriage. These results indicate that inhibin levels may be used as a marker for the ectopic or abnormal pregnancies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19079962\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Menopause\"><strong>2) Menopause<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>During menopause, ovarian follicles, inhibin, estrogen, and androgen levels are reduced while FSH levels increase. As a result of these changes, the menstrual cycle becomes irregular [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16414322\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12190835\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In women over 40 years with periods, high levels of FSH were only linked to reduced blood inhibin B levels but not inhibin A levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15181087\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The luteal phase is also affected by age. In older women, during this phase, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-21-science-based-health-benefits-progesterone-4-drawbacks\/\">progesterone<\/a> levels remain stable but inhibin A levels are reduced [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12190835\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Premature_Ovarian_Failure_POF\"><strong>3) Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>POF is a condition associated with loss of menstruation, infertility, and increased sex hormone levels in women under the age of 40. In these women, blood inhibin A and B levels are lower, while FSH is higher [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15562017\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11098038\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Male_Infertility\"><strong>4) Male Infertility<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inhibin B is important for Sertoli cell development and sperm production [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10363117\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Low levels of inhibin B reduce sperm production and can lead to testicular problems. Thus, inhibin B levels may be useful in predicting male infertility [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2494289\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical study of 160 males, blood inhibin B levels were used as a marker for male infertility [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24669628\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Pregnancy_Loss\"><strong>5) Pregnancy Loss<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Blood inhibin A levels increase over the course of pregnancy. They remain low during the first and second trimesters and then rise during the third trimester [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7750194\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In the later stages of pregnancy, the fetal placenta becomes the major source of inhibin. In a spontaneous abortion study, a significant decrease in maternal blood inhibin A levels was observed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12456605\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Thus, inhibin A may be useful in predicting spontaneous abortion and early pregnancy loss.<\/p>\n<p>Inhibin A may also predict the survival of the fetus during early pregnancy in women undergoing <em>in vitro<\/em> fertilization (IVF). Increased pregnancy loss was seen in women with lower blood inhibin A after IVF [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14711546\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9408259\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Conditions_Associated_with_High_Inhibin_Levels\">Conditions Associated with High Inhibin Levels<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Inhibin levels are a marker of reproductive health. Low or high levels don\u2019t necessarily indicate a problem if there are no symptoms or if your doctor tells you not to worry about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Ovarian_Cancer\"><strong>1) Ovarian Cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and inhibins play a role in its development [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4817525\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11451584\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Inhibin B is the major form of inhibin secreted by granulosa cell tumors and can be used as a tumor marker to determine response to therapy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10435065\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Total inhibin levels were elevated in six postmenopausal women with granulosa cell tumors [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2770810\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Blood levels of inhibins were raised in women with mucin-producing epithelial cell cancers [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8413476\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Breast_Cancer\"><strong>2) Breast Cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Blood inhibin also increases significantly in breast cancer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11836327\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Women with breast cancer that underwent surgery showed a decrease in blood inhibin levels, indicating that these tumors may be secreting inhibins [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15451571\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Inhibins can be also be used as a marker to diagnose breast cancer in postmenopausal women. In these women, inhibin levels were already very low, thus any changes in inhibin levels were useful in the detection of a tumor [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27761376\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Down_Syndrome\"><strong>3) Down Syndrome<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The risk of having a child with Down syndrome is highest among women over 35 years of age [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18596694\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The link between increased blood inhibin and Down syndrome was seen in various studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1475248\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8849760\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Inhibin A is used in tests performed to predict the risk of Down syndrome [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15319826\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Preeclampsia\"><strong>4) Preeclampsia<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy that causes high blood pressure and organ damage after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
