Mainly used for gynecological health, <em>Angelica gigas<\/em> has the potential to combat inflammation and protect the brain.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Angelica_gigas\"><a id=\"post-43077-_izwd6yqkbb82\"><\/a><strong>What Is <em>Angelica gigas<\/em>?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Angelica gigas<\/em> (full name: <em>Angelica gigas<\/em> Nakai) is also referred to as Korean Angelica, giant Angelica, and cham-dang-gui (\ucc38\ub2f9\uadc0). It is mainly found in Korea, with two other closely-related <em>Angelica<\/em> species found in Japan and China [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese species is <em>Angelica sinensis<\/em>, also referred to as<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dong-quai\/\"> dong quai<\/a> or danggui. There are differences in the chemical composition and potential medical uses between <em>Angelica gigas<\/em> and <em>Angelica sinensis<\/em>. <em>Angelica sinensis<\/em> is typically used to promote blood circulation, while <em>Angelica gigas<\/em> is preferred for menstrual issues and overall gynecological health [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23476692\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the dried root of <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>is boiled in water before being taken orally [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22583405\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4662572\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Components\"><a id=\"post-43077-_yssmz6fx99it\"><\/a><strong>Components<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The major chemical components of <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>are decursin and decursinol angelate. These two molecules are rapidly converted to decursinol in the liver. In a clinical trial on 64 pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal women, EstroG-100 improved menopausal symptoms (vasomotor, paresthesia, insomnia, nervousness, melancholia, vertigo, fatigue, and rheumatic <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a>) without serious side effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21887807\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Angelica gigas <\/em>normalized estrogen and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-21-science-based-health-benefits-progesterone-4-drawbacks\/\">progesterone<\/a> levels and reduced bone loss in menopausal rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3466922\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>An herbal formula with <em>Angelica gigas<\/em>, Cassia <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-15-proven-scientific-reasons-spice-life-cinnamon-references\/\">cinnamon<\/a>, and <em>Cnidium officinale <\/em>reduced bone loss, weight gain, and uterine thinning in menopausal rats by activating estrogen-responsive genes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29326134\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although the results are promising, a single clinical trial (using <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>in combination with other herbs) and some animal and cell-based research cannot be considered sufficient evidence to support the use of <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>to improve menopausal symptoms. More clinical trials on larger populations are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Brain_Function\"><a id=\"post-43077-_ogfr0cbl2q8n\"><\/a><strong>2) Brain Function<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A study measuring brain electrical activity in 20 healthy volunteers found that smelling <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>essential oil increased the level of brain waves related to language learning ability [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28779924\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Brain cell damage can occur due to many factors, including inflammation and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">oxidative stress<\/a>. Oxidative stress can cause damage to DNA, proteins, and fats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26935478\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20061649\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Angelica gigas <\/em>prevented the death of brain cells in cell-based studies, suggesting its potential to prevent neurodegenerative diseases [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A standardized alcohol extraction from <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>called INM-176 reduced cognitive deficits and decreased memory loss in mice treated with scopolamine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22846435\/\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25915423\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>ESP-102 is a formula with <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>root, <em>Saururus chinensis<\/em> fruit, and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/schisandra\/\"><em>Schisandra<\/em><\/a><em> chinensis<\/em> fruit in an 8:1:1 ratio. ESP-102 protected rat brain cells from <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glutamate\/\">glutamate<\/a> toxicity and helped the animals recover from memory impairment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The formulas LMK02 (<em>Angelica<\/em> <em>gigas <\/em>and 7 other herbs\/mushrooms) and LMK03 (<em>Angelica<\/em> <em>gigas <\/em>and <em>Poria cocos <\/em>mushroom) protected rat hippocampal brain cells against cell damage and inhibited neurotoxicity and oxidative stress in human neuroblastoma cells. LMK02 and LMK03 also reduce Alzheimer\u2019s-like symptoms in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20079417\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Bozhougyiqi-tang (BZYQT) is an herbal medicine made from <em>Angelica gigas<\/em>, ginseng, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/astragalus\/\"><em>Astragalus<\/em><\/a>, and other herbs. It protected mouse hippocampal cells from cell damage and led to greater cognitive performance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24991099\/\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><em>Angelica gigas <\/em>also prevented brain damage and helped counter the onset of symptoms of pre-Alzheimer\u2019s disease in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25888524\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Treatment of mice with decursin reduced memory loss and protected brain cells from oxidative stress. Similarly, decursinol reduced memory loss in mice and protected brain cells from glutamate toxicity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The research in animals is promising, but only a small human study has been carried out. Larger, more robust clinical trials are needed to establish if <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>helps improve and preserve brain function.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_and_Cell_Research_Lack_of_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-43077-_9dkypl3orbv8\"><\/a><strong>Animal and Cell Research (Lack of Evidence)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Inflammation\"><a id=\"post-43077-_v2kxlajif3sl\"><\/a><strong>Inflammation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Angelica gigas <\/em>reduced inflammation caused by too much nitric oxide and inflammatory molecules like <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-alpha<\/a> and IL-6 in rats and mice [<a href=\"http:\/\/koreascience.or.kr\/article\/ArticleFullRecord.jsp?cn=DHBCBU_2014_v29n6_85\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/koreascience.or.kr\/article\/ArticleFullRecord.jsp?cn=DHBCBU_2014_v29n6_85\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice with eczema, its compounds nodakenin and decursin reduced itching, the severity of the lesions, and blood antibody levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25209505\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24874886\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The herbal formula APR (<em>Angelica gigas<\/em>, <em>Panax ginseng<\/em>, and <em>Rhus verniciflua<\/em>) is used to suppress inflammation. In inflamed mouse macrophages (immune cells that engulf foreign particles), APR reduced<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> and improved mitochondrial function [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4020494\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Both decursin and decursinol angelate protected rat adrenal gland cells from toxins and decreased inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23762139\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5489925\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Preventing_Weight_Gain\"><a id=\"post-43077-_vo61tfzi5gvk\"><\/a><strong>Preventing Weight Gain<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Decursin prevented <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a> from causing fat cells to grow, drastically reducing fat accumulation and weight gain, in mice. Mice treated with decursin had reduced levels of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-leptin-its-role-in-chronic-inflammation-cfs-and-weight\/\">leptin<\/a>, resistin, IL-6, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/CCL2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">MCP-1<\/a> (which were increased by a <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-carb-diet-vs-high-carb-diet\/\">high-fat diet<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21972114\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Bone_Loss\"><a id=\"post-43077-_lrzb4q3skmw\"><\/a><strong>Bone Loss<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In menopausal rats, <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>prevented a decrease in bone mineral density, an indicator of bone loss that may lead to osteoporosis. Additionally, <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>increased bone stiffness and strength compared to controls and prevented bone loss in treated rats\u2019 tibias [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23039111\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Nicotine_Addiction\"><a id=\"post-43077-_ybalzkhqck64\"><\/a><strong>Nicotine Addiction<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Smelling <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>essential oils reduced sensitivity to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/28-proven-health-benefits-nicotine-4-potential-risks\/\">nicotine <\/a>in nicotine-addicted mice by blocking the release of<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dopamine\/\"> dopamine<\/a> in response to this drug [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16327174\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Pain\"><a id=\"post-43077-_26revsw9exfb\"><\/a><strong>Pain<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Decursinol blocked<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\"> pain<\/a> perception in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12759141\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19557373\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Reducing_Skin_Aging\"><a id=\"post-43077-_11rwxrrb8hzb\"><\/a><strong>Reducing Skin Aging<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-collagen\/\">Collagen<\/a> is an abundant protein found in the skin, whose levels diminishes with age.<\/p>\n<p><em>Angelica gigas <\/em>increased collagen synthesis in human connective tissue cells [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tsijournals.com\/abstract\/super-critical-fluid-extract-of-angelica-gigas-nakai-promotes-collagen-synthesis-in-human-dermal-fibroblast-5762.html\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer\"><a id=\"post-43077-_v8xba91zjf6l\"><\/a><strong>Cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Below, we will discuss some preliminary research on <em>Angelica gigas\u2019 <\/em>potential anticancer effects. It\u2019s still in the animal and cell stage and further clinical studies have yet to determine if its extract may be useful in cancer therapies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not under any circumstances attempt to replace conventional cancer therapies with <em>Angelica gigas <\/em>or any other supplements<\/strong>.
