If you focus on something, that means that you are paying particular attention to something.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Forms_of_Attention\"><a id=\"post-41799-_6i4cf62favkv\"><\/a><strong>Forms of Attention<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sustained attention<\/strong>: the ability to focus cognitive function on specific stimuli.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Selective Attention<\/strong>: the ability to pick one thing to focus on while filtering out stimuli.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Task-switching<\/strong>: the ability to switch between tasks back and forth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visual Attention<\/strong>: a type of attention that allows us to deal with capacity problems by selecting relevant, and filtering irrelevant information. Visual attention has 3 subtypes including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spatial<\/strong>: selectively processing visual information through prioritizing an area in your visual field.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feature-based<\/strong>: enhances how you perceive an image\u2019s characteristics (useful for filtering out stimuli).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Object-based<\/strong>: the relationship between an object and selective attention, suggesting enhanced visual processing of that object\u2019s feature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Brain_Networks_in_FocusAttention\"><a id=\"post-41799-_i4f8f81hwn8d\"><\/a><strong>Brain Networks in Focus\/Attention<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Prefrontal Cortex plays a role in executive functions including [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2738354\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sustained Attention<\/li>\n<li>Short term memory tasks<\/li>\n<li>Motor attention<\/li>\n<li>Working memory<\/li>\n<li>Planning<\/li>\n<li>Flexibility<\/li>\n<li>Detecting stimulus\/completing tasks<\/li>\n<li>Inhibitor control of interference<\/li>\n<li>Delayed responding<\/li>\n<li>Set shifting<\/li>\n<li>Active problem solving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While these brain areas are needed to complete tasks at hand, they\u2019re not necessarily involved in concentrating itself.<\/p>\n<p>The Salience Network may be responsible for determining what is most important from incoming information and deciding what requires your focus.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Salience_Network\"><a id=\"post-41799-_3c5307x7cvtu\"><\/a><strong>Salience Network<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Salience Network includes three structures [<a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/content\/dam\/sm\/scsnl\/documents\/Menon_Salience_Network_15.pdf\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Amygdala<\/li>\n<li>Ventral Striatum<\/li>\n<li>The Substantia Nigra\/Ventral Tegmental Area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Salience Network selects specific stimuli for additional processing from a constant stream of input information.<\/p>\n<p>Saliency detection mechanisms in the brain are at the core of this process and split into two general mechanisms.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A fast, automatic \u201cprimitive\u201d mechanism for filtering out stimuli based on their senses.<\/li>\n<li>A high-order system for competitive circumstantial specific stimulus selection. This increases resources for goal driven-behaviors based on what is most important at the given time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that salience (importance of stimuli) may vary between individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The Saliency Network plays a crucial role in identifying the most biologically and cognitive relevant internal and external stimuli to prioritize and guide behavior.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Structural_Brain_Changes_and_Brain_Chemicals_that_Affect_Focus\"><a id=\"post-41799-_6zjc5r61ry50\"><\/a><strong>Structural Brain Changes and Brain Chemicals that Affect Focus<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dopamine\/\"><strong>Dopamine<\/strong><\/a>: it plays a role in diseases with attentional impairments like ADHD and Alzheimer\u2019s. It is a key neurotransmitter in behavioral adaption and preparing voluntary attention [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12126656\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/norepinephrine-stress-hormone\/\"><strong>Noradrenaline<\/strong><\/a>: it plays a role in many forms of attention. Stimulant medications also release a combination of noradrenaline and dopamine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6997668\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cholinergic treatments (AMPA receptors\/<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/acetylcholine\/\"><strong>acetylcholine<\/strong><\/a><strong>, phosphatidylcholine, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors): <\/strong>they improve attention impairments in conditions where the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-18-scientific-health-benefits-choline-cdp-choline-alpha-gpc\/\">choline<\/a> system is dysfunctional and also in healthy subjects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12618916\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3466476\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beta\/Alpha waves: <\/strong>these are both associated with attentional processes and other basic cognitive functions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3507158\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cortical thickness<\/strong>: this is reduced in aging and in diseases such as Alzheimer\u2019s. Increasing cortical thickness improves focus, perceiving internal experience, sensory processing, and executive functions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3903052\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1361002\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nitric oxide\/Increasing <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/15-ways-improve-brain-circulation\/\"><strong>brain blood flow<\/strong><\/a>: regional blood flow changes are noted in people with ADHD. Although most of them have multiple health benefits, remember to talk to your doctor before making any major changes to your lifestyle and diet.
