This effect was mainly due to the polyphenolic compound verbascoside [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2835915\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a third clinical trial on 44 active men and women, a commercial lemon verbena extract given before and after one day of exhausting exercise reduced muscle damage and improved recovery. The extract also improved the activity of an antioxidant enzyme (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\">glutathione<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/gpx1\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\"> peroxidase<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5781260\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>All in all, the evidence is insufficient to support the use of lemon verbena in preventing muscle damage and reducing exercise fatigue. Larger, more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm these early findings.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Antioxidant\"><a id=\"post-41302-_j39719uzd6yc\"><\/a><strong>2) Antioxidant<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As previously described, lemon verbena extract reduced oxidative stress from intense exercise training in 3 trials on 74 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20967458\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21083769\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5781260\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Lemon verbena infusion protected against<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> in rats with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\"> colitis<\/a> by <strong>stimulating the activity of the antioxidant enzyme <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brain-fog-gene-rs4880-or-sod2\/\"><strong>superoxide dismutase<\/strong><\/a><strong> and decreasing fat breakdown <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21688009\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another study in rats, verbascoside increased the antioxidant capacity of the blood. This boosted their ability to fight off free radicals that would normally disrupt normal cell activity [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308814609005123?via%3Dihub\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Lemon verbena infusion had an antioxidant level comparable to sports drinks and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/green-tea\/\">green tea<\/a> in test tubes. Infusions made by soaking the leaves had stronger antioxidant effects than those obtained by boiling the plant. Combinations of different antioxidant herb infusions had a synergistic effect that increased their antioxidant activity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21434775\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20740475\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21308820\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Again, the evidence is insufficient to claim that lemon verbena reduces oxidative stress in humans until more clinical trials are conducted.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Insomnia\"><a id=\"post-41302-_plvfiewqw1h4\"><\/a><strong>3) Insomnia<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 100 people with insomnia, taking a syrup with lemon verbena one hour before going to bed significantly improved <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\">sleep<\/a> quality [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30450627\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although promising, this potential health benefit is only supported by one clinical trial. More studies are needed to confirm its preliminary results.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Inflammation\"><a id=\"post-41302-_nsqgdpnjac49\"><\/a><strong>4) Inflammation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Inflammation is one of the main factors leading to the progressive worsening of multiple sclerosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-symptoms-diagnosis-risk-factors-of-multiple-sclerosis\/\">MS<\/a>). In a clinical trial on 30 MS patients,<strong> inflammation marker levels <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/c-reactive-protein\/\">CRP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interferon-gamma-how-to-increase-decrease-high-low-levels\/\">IFN-\u03b3<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/IL12a\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">2<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/il23r\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-23<\/a>) <strong>decreased <\/strong>with lemon verbena supplementation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25617561\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, a commercial lemon verbena extract had no effects on <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a> and CRP levels in a clinical trial on 44 people recovering from exhausting exercise [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5781260\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The verbascoside in lemon verbena may help fight inflammation by increasing the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/8-proven-health-benefits-tyrosine\/\">tyrosine<\/a> phosphatase [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25807993\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Polyphenols from lemon verbena may also reduce inflammatory effects by lowering reactive oxidative species, which are accumulated at the site of inflammation and cause oxidative stress [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26055125\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Only 2 clinical trials (with opposed results) and some cell-based research are insufficient evidence to attest to the anti-inflammatory effects of lemon verbena. Further clinical research is required.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Obesity\"><a id=\"post-41302-_c95l809lznl0\"><\/a><strong>5) Obesity<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 54 overweight women, the group that took lemon verbena and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hibiscus\/\"><em>hibiscus sabdariffa<\/em><\/a> extract experienced <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\"><strong>weight loss<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>decreased blood pressure<\/strong>, and <strong>increased feelings of fullness and satisfaction after eating <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29862395\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Polyphenols from lemon verbena <strong>lowered fat levels <\/strong>in human cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26055125\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, a single clinical trial combining lemon verbena with another herbal extract is insufficient to support its use for weight loss. More clinical trials testing lemon verbena alone are needed.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Joint_Pain\"><a id=\"post-41302-_a71fw0oc8gbc\"><\/a><strong>6) Joint Pain<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 45 people, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-22-science-based-health-benefits-of-fish-oil\/\">fish oil<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-22-science-based-health-benefits-of-fish-oil\/\">omega-3<\/a>) and lemon verbena lowered joint <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a> over the course of 9 weeks. The verbascoside in lemon verbena supposedly <strong>provided antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22087615\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Again, there is only one clinical trial that tested lemon verbena in combination with other compounds. Clinical trials with lemon verbena alone are needed to confirm this preliminary result and evaluate its specific contribution to the effects observed.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_and_Cell_Research_Lack_of_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-41302-_k1uncdu4vmd\"><\/a><strong>Animal and Cell Research (Lack of Evidence)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"Infections\"><a id=\"post-41302-_oh3k49y0ky1g\"><\/a><strong>Infections<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of lemon verbena for infections. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit in people with the following infections.<\/p>\n<p>Lemon verbena ointment <strong>reduced the severity of skin wounds <\/strong>in mice infected with <em>Staphylococcus<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19090293\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Its essential oil also reduced the amount of the parasite <em>Trypanosoma cruzi <\/em>in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22510908\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In test tubes, lemon verbena killed and inhibited bacteria and fungi that may cause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Skin infections and food poisoning (<em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19090293\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Stomach ulcers <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/h-pylori-part-1\/\">(<em>Helicobacter pylori<\/em><\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12752733\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue, weight gain, and digestive issues (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/treat-cure-candida\/\"><em>Candida<\/em><\/a><em> albicans<\/em>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27757185\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, <strong>lemon verbena alone had no effect on various strains of antibiotic-resistant <em>Staphylococcus aureus <\/em>and <em>Escherichia coli<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em>An inhibitory effect on some strains was only seen when the lemon verbena extract was combined with an antibiotic (gentamicin) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=evaluation+of+antibacterial+activity+lemon+verbena\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Limitations_and_Caveats\"><a id=\"post-41302-_y4kyk7tmd39a\"><\/a><strong>Limitations and Caveats<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most of the potential health benefits of lemon verbena have only been tested in a single clinical trial, sometimes combined with other extracts.<\/p>\n<p>Lemon verbena has been widely used to treat problems with digestion, the immune system, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\">sleep<\/a>, asthma, colds, fever, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, skin conditions, and chills in folk medicine. However,<strong> there is no scientific evidence for any of these effects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>More human studies are needed to determine if lemon verbena may help with any of these conditions.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects\"><a id=\"post-41302-_sxcw0ksg4e0p\"><\/a><strong>Side Effects<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Keep in mind that the safety profile of lemon verbena is relatively unknown, given the lack of well-designed clinical studies. The list of side effects below is not a definite one and you should consult your doctor about other potential side effects based on your health condition and possible drug or supplement interactions<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lemon verbena supplements have caused occasional <strong>dermatitis and increased kidney irritation <\/strong>in people with kidney diseases [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rxlist.com\/lemon_verbena-page2\/supplements.htm\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Verbascoside has the potential to increase chromosome abnormalities, as observed in a study on the genomic toxicity of the chemical in fat cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18395372\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>If you are pregnant, ask your doctor before using any natural supplements such as lemon verbena, as the <strong>effects of lemon verbena on pregnant women have not been well researched<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Forms_of_Supplementation\"><a id=\"post-41302-_58zb3099lhu0\"><\/a><strong>Forms of Supplementation<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lemon verbena supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use due to the lack of solid clinical research. It contains verbascoside, citral, and luteolin 7-diglucuronide [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0367326X98000161\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Lemon verbena <strong>essential oil<\/strong> contains many of the beneficial chemicals of the plant, with citral making up a large percentage of the oil (41%). Citral is the cause of the plant\u2019s strong citrus smell and taste and has potential <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-antibiotics\/\">antibacterial<\/a> and antifungal effects.
