Read this post to learn about how probiotics could help you <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">lose weight<\/a> and improve your metabolism.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_May_Probiotics_help_with_Weight_Loss\"><b>How May Probiotics help with Weight Loss?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Reducing_Calorie_Harvest_from_Foods\"><b>1) Reducing Calorie Harvest from Foods<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In mice and rats, obesity-related microbes can harvest more energy from food than the microbes that are found in lean animals [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17183312\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Compared with lean mice with normal genes, the gut bacteria of obese mice have more genes that can burn carbohydrates for energy [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19043404\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Changing_Metabolism\"><b>2) Changing Metabolism<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How the gut bacteria metabolize primary <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/bile-supplements\/\">bile<\/a> acids to secondary bile acids affect our metabolism by activating the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/farnesoid-x-receptor-fxr\/\">farnesoid X receptor<\/a>, which controls fat in the liver and blood sugar balance [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22414897\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Also, activation of bile acid receptors can increase metabolic rate in brown adipose tissues (fat that burns fat) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23395169\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19865183\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Intestinal <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-your-gut-microbiota-can-make-you-fat-or-thin\/\">microbiota<\/a> can affect host fat storage [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4808900\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice, diet accounts for 57% of changes in their <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gut-bacteria-microbiome\/\">gut microbiome<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19865183\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Fecal_Transplants\"><b>3) Fecal Transplants <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gut-bacteria-microbiome\/\">Gut bacteria<\/a> from stools of healthy and lean humans transferred to obese people with type 2 diabetes increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\">insulin<\/a> sensitivity and gut bacteria diversity in a clinical trial on 18 people . However, this study did not observe significant changes in body mass index 6 weeks after the transfer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22728514\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a case study, fecal matter was transplanted from an overweight donor to a lean patient for <i>C. difficile<\/i> infection treatment. After the transplant, the recipient had increased appetite and rapid unintentional weight gain that could not be explained by the recovery from the <i>C. difficile<\/i> infection alone [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26034755\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Feeding obese and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin-resistant<\/a> rats with antibiotics or transplanting them with fecal matters from healthy rats reversed both conditions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26244577\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In identical twin rats with discordant phenotypes (e.g., one obese and one lean, despite identical genetics), the gut bacteria also seems to control their metabolism. Germ-free mice (with no gut bacteria) populated with the obese twin had increased fat cells and reduced gut bacteria diversity compared to mice that were populated with the lean twin&#8217;s fecal matter [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24009397\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In humans, more clinical studies would be necessary to determine whether fecal microbiota transplants can have long-term effects on <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin sensitivity<\/a> or weight, even though fecal microbiota transplant improved the gut microbiome for up to 24 weeks in a small trial on 10 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20716985\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Presently, there are several phases 2 and 3 clinical trials for fecal microbiota transplant [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5045147\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>While results thus far have shown that fecal microbiota transplant is a promising therapy for metabolic problems, it does come with risks, including [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5045147\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infections getting carried over with the stool transplant<\/li>\n<li>Side effects such as diarrhea or fever<\/li>\n<li>Negative traits or health problems could potentially be transferred along with the gut bacteria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Controlling_Appetite_and_Satiety\"><b>4) Controlling Appetite and Satiety<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Prebiotic fermentation by the gut bacteria may increase gut hormones that promote appetite and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a> responses (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glp-1-a-hormone-that-causes-weight-loss-and-good-cognitive-effects\/\">such as GLP-1<\/a> and peptide YY), as seen in a clinical trial on 10 healthy people and a study in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19776140\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21113792\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Reducing_Inflammation_from_Leaky_Gut\"><b>5) Reducing Inflammation from \u201cLeaky Gut\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Weight gain is associated with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/leaky-gut-syndrome-signs-symptoms-treatments\/\"> \u201cleaky gut<\/a>\u201d (intestinal permeability). This may increase circulating pro-inflammatory <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lipopolysaccharides\/\">lipopolysaccharides<\/a> in the bloodstream (endotoxemia) [<a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/86\/5\/1286.abstract?ijkey=b7517cc55ff48c4756bc64a429373151a38d554c&amp;keytype2=tf_ipsecsha\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Metabolic endotoxemia can result in chronic, low-grade inflammation as well as increased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative<\/a> damage associated with cardiovascular disease [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23943858\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice with metabolic syndrome, treatment with a <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/probiotics-good-bacteria\/\">probiotic<\/a> led to a significant reduction in tissue inflammation and \u201cleaky gut\u201d due to a <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/low-carb-diet-vs-high-carb-diet\/\">high-fat diet<\/a> (metabolic endotoxemia) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17823788\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Bacteroidetes_vs_Firmicutes_-_The_Obese_vs_Lean_Link\"><b><i>Bacteroidetes <\/i><\/b><b>vs <\/b><b><i>Firmicutes <\/i><\/b><b>&#8211; The Obese vs Lean Link?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i>Bacteroidetes <\/i>and <i>Firmicutes <\/i>phyla (groups) comprise ~90% of the human gut bacteria [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20203603\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In one small study on 12 obese people, high <i>Bacteroidetes <\/i>levels correlated with weight loss [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17183309\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A larger study in humans found that obesity was indeed associated with [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19043404\/\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduced levels of Bacteroidetes<\/li>\n<li>Reduced bacteria density<\/li>\n<li>More bacteria genes that metabolize carbohydrates and fats for energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Studies in mice and rats also confirmed the link between <i>Bacteroidetes <\/i>and leanness. <i>Bacteroidetes <\/i>are also more abundant in lean animals, while <i>Firmicutes <\/i>are more abundant in their obese counterparts [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16033867\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18927555\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3687783\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, in these studies, it was unclear whether the obesity-inducing high-fat diet caused the bacteria predominance or the bacteria caused the obesity.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, mice that have 2 copies of the leptin gene also have a 50% reduction in <i>Bacteroidetes<\/i>, suggesting that obesity may also change the gut bacteria composition [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16033867\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><i>Note:<\/i> <i>Lactobacilli<\/i>, <i>Streptococci<\/i>, and <i>Staphylococci <\/i>are <i>Firmicutes<\/i>, whereas <i>Bifidobacteria <\/i>are actinobacteria, which are neither <i>Firmicutes <\/i>nor <i>Bacteroidetes<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Although a high number of <i>Firmicutes <\/i>(like <i>Lactobacilli<\/i>) in the gut seems to correlate with obesity, supplementation with <i>Lactobacilli <\/i>helped with weight loss in many cases.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Probiotic_Strains_for_Weight_Loss_and_Metabolic_Health\"><b>Probiotic Strains for Weight Loss and Metabolic Health<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Consuming <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/probiotics-good-bacteria\/\">probiotics<\/a> can <b>reduce body weight and BMI<\/b>. A greater effect may be achieved in overweight subjects, when multiple species of probiotics are consumed in combination or when they are taken for more than 8 weeks [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27149163\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Consult your doctor before taking probiotic bacteria. Never consume probiotics or implement any other lifestyle and dietary changes in place of what your doctor recommends or prescribes<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Mixed_Probiotic_Blends\"><b>Mixed Probiotic Blends<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i> <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-acidophilus\/\"><i>L. acidophilus<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/b-animalis\/\"><i>B. animalis<\/i><\/a> ssp<i>. lactis<\/i> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-casei\/\"><i>L. casei<\/i><\/a> <b>reduced BMI<\/b>,<b> fat percentage<\/b>,<b> and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-leptin-its-role-in-chronic-inflammation-cfs-and-weight\/\"><b>leptin<\/b><\/a><b> levels in a clinical trial on 75 overweight individuals<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25079040\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Oral administration of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/b-longum\/\"><i>B. longum<\/i><\/a>, <i>B. bifidum<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/b-longum\/\"><i>B. infantis<\/i><\/a>, and <i>B. animalis <\/i>decreased glucose levels, ameliorated insulin resistance, and reduced the expressions of inflammatory adipocytokines in obese mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25355437\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In two clinical trials on almost 150 obese children, the intake of synbiotics (probiotics + prebiotics) resulted in a significant <b>reduction in BMI<\/b>,<b> waist circumference<\/b>,<b> and some cardiometabolic risk factors<\/b>, such as total <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a>-cholesterol, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides <\/a>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23477506\/\">R,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26259892\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Several studies have demonstrated that individual probiotic bacteria strains can help with weight loss. However, many of these are observational in nature, while others were done in animals.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Probiotic_and_Weight_Loss\"><b>Probiotic and Weight Loss<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Bifidobacterium_animalis\"><b><i>Bifidobacterium animalis<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Humans with more <i>B. animalis<\/i> have lower BMI, while those with less of this bacteria have higher BMI [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3826031\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3374072\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Daily ingestion of milk containing <i>B. animalis<\/i> ssp. <i>lactis<\/i> significantly <b>reduced the BMI<\/b>,<b> total cholesterol<\/b>,<b> low-density lipoprotein<\/b>,<b> and inflammatory markers<\/b> in a clinical trial on 51 people with metabolic syndrome [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27126957\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Bifidobacterium_breve_B-3\"><b><i>Bifidobacterium breve<\/i><\/b><b> (B-3)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/b-breve\/\">B. breve<\/a><\/i> <b>lowered fat mass<\/b> and improved <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/elevated-ggt\/\">GGT<\/a> and hs-<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/c-reactive-protein\/\">CRP<\/a> in 52 adults with obese tendencies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4463018\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><i>B. breve<\/i> <b>reduced weight and belly fat<\/b> in a dose-dependent manner. It also reduced <b>total cholesterol<\/b>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting\/\"><b>fasting<\/b><\/a><b> glucose<\/b>,<b> and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/insulin-101\/\"><b>insulin<\/b><\/a> in a mice model of diet-induced <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\">obesity<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20699581\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lactobacillus_gasseri_BNR17_BNR17_and_SBT2055\"><b><i>Lactobacillus gasseri<\/i><\/b><b> BNR17 (BNR17 and SBT2055) <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 2 clinical trials on 272 overweight adults, these probiotic strains [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3611107\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23614897\"> R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Decreased body weight<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Reduced waist and hip circumference<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Reduced belly fat and fat under the skin<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, their constant consumption may be required to maintain this effect [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23614897\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-rhamnosus\/\"><i>L. rhamnosus<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-gasseri\/\"><i>L. gasseri<\/i><\/a> significantly lowered weight in mice [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27231730\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26299683\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23917447\">R<\/a>], while <i>L. gasseri<\/i> also reduced body weight in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21046354\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lactobacillus_paracasei\"><b><i>Lactobacillus paracasei <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-paracasei\/\"><i>L paracasei<\/i><\/a> <b>decreased energy<\/b>\/<b>food intake<\/b> in a small trial on 21 people and a study in piglets [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25049132\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Water extract of <i>L. paracasei<\/i> <b>reduced body weight<\/b> in obese rats. It decreased the formation of lipid plaques in the aorta, reduced fat cells size, and inhibited fat absorption, thereby reducing fat production (lipogenesis) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26299532\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lactobacillus_Plantarum_PL60_and_PL62\"><b><i>Lactobacillus Plantarum<\/i><\/b><b> (PL60 and PL62)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-l-plantarum\/\">L. Plantarum<\/a><\/i> PL60 and PL62 produce a fatty acid called <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/conjugated-linoleic-acid\/\">conjugated linoleic acid<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/conjugated-linoleic-acid\/\">CLA<\/a>), which can help increase fat burning in obese mice. After 8 weeks, <i>L. rhamnosus<\/i> PL60 reduced body weight and white fat tissues without reducing caloric intake [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16807088\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17897219\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A low-calorie diet supplemented with <i>L. plantarum<\/i> reduced BMI in a small trial on 25 adults with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\">obesity<\/a> and high blood pressure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3852723\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lactobacillus_rhamnosus_CGMCC13724\"><b><i>Lactobacillus rhamnosus <\/i><\/b><b>(CGMCC1.3724)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 125 obese adults, this probiotic strain [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21505361\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Induced weight loss <\/b><\/li>\n<li>Reduced fat mass<\/li>\n<li>Reduced circulating <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-leptin-its-role-in-chronic-inflammation-cfs-and-weight\/\">leptin<\/a> concentrations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally,<i> L. rhamnosus <\/i>CGMCC1.3724 improved liver parameters in a small trial on 20 obese children with liver dysfunction noncompliant with lifestyle interventions [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24299712\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Lactobacillus_salivarius_Ls-33\"><b><i>Lactobacillus salivarius<\/i><\/b><b> Ls-33<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 50 obese adolescents, introducing <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-salivarius\/\"><i>L. salivarius<\/i><\/a> Ls-33 increased certain groups of bacteria.
