They also contain <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-vitamin-c-32-science-based-health-benefits\/\">vitamin C<\/a>, fiber, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-inulin\/\">inulin<\/a>, and polyphenols. Its composition depends on the part of the plant, as well as on other factors such as the variety, type of soil, and climate. Artichokes enriched in this probiotic were beneficial to constipated patients in another trial on 20 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21447019\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22225544\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-38440-_idwruwkzxp4y\"><\/a>Irritable Bowel Syndrome<\/h4>\n<p>Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder that affects 22% of the population. Some symptoms include stomach pain, diarrhea, flatulence, and constipation. Many factors contribute to IBS: abnormal gut movement, imbalanced intestinal microbes, genetic factors, inflammation, and immune disorders, among others [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11180525\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3281215\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on over 200 people with IBS, the symptoms (both constipation and diarrhea) decreased significantly after 2 months of treatment with globe artichoke leaf extract capsules [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15353023\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a survey of almost 300 IBS patients who took globe artichoke leaf extract, 96% rated the extract as better than or equivalent to previous IBS therapies, such as antidiarrheals, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-laxatives\/\">laxatives<\/a>, and antidepressants [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11180525\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Both globe artichoke extract and its compound cynaropicrin stop muscle spasms in the gut. In guinea pig intestines, these artichoke extract constituents inhibited gut contractions, which may help reduce stomach pain and diarrhea [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15863902\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>All in all, the evidence suggests that artichoke extract may improve digestive issues such as indigestion or IBS and promote a healthy gut flora. Because FDA-approved measures are preferable and possibly more effective for these conditions, you may only take artichoke extract as a supportive measure if your doctor recommends it.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Preventing_Heart_Disease\"><a id=\"post-38440-_t064a96t3q4j\"><\/a><strong>2) Preventing Heart Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-38440-_a5jpz73jtbw6\"><\/a>Lowering Cholesterol<\/h4>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 131 people with high blood cholesterol but otherwise healthy, taking artichoke leaf extract for 12 weeks slightly reduced total cholesterol. The extract lowered <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a> cholesterol and increase <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a> cholesterol in 2 trials on 189 overweight people with high blood cholesterol. Artichoke juice had similar effects in another trial on 18 people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18424099\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22746542\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10758778\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15581909\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Combined formulations with artichoke leaf extract, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/red-yeast-rice\/\">red yeast rice<\/a>, and sugar cane <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/policosanol\/\">policosanol<\/a> also lowered total and LDL cholesterol in 3 clinical trials on 184 people with high blood cholesterol [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23815518\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23266743\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22527287\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a supplement with chlorogenic acid from artichoke extract, bergamot extract, phytosterols, and vitamin C reduced total and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/non-hdl-cholesterol\/\">non-HDL cholesterol<\/a> in a trial on 90 overweight people with high blood fat levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/31225673\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In hamsters, a 6-week diet containing artichoke leaf extract led to significantly lower total cholesterol (by 15%), <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/non-hdl-cholesterol\/\">non-HDL cholesterol<\/a> (by ~30%), and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/triglycerides\/\">triglycerides <\/a>(by 22-29%) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22183827\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>High cholesterol levels can cause plaque formation in the arteries. This contributes to heart diseases. By reducing cholesterol levels, artichoke extract can stop the accumulation of plaque [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26310198\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One of artichoke\u2019s constituents, <strong>luteolin<\/strong>,<strong> inhibits cholesterol formation<\/strong>. You may take it as an add-on to your treatment regime if your doctor determines that it may help in your case. Never take artichoke extract in place of what your doctor recommends or prescribes.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Protecting_the_Liver\"><a id=\"post-38440-_ajgliw83f4ts\"><\/a><strong>3) Protecting the Liver<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Globe artichoke extract increases bile production, which helps remove dangerous toxins from the liver. Its compounds can also help protect the liver from oxidative damage and inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26310198\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23195590\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 90 people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, supplementation with artichoke leaf extract reduced liver fat levels and liver damage [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29520889\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The extract also reduced liver damage in a clinical trial on 30 people with high blood cholesterol levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5315731\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Artichoke leaf extract failed to reduce liver damage in a clinical trial on 17 people with chronic hepatitis C. However, the extract of wild Egyptian cardoon did reduce viral load and liver damage in 12 out of 15 people with this disease in another trial [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19427774\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27296047\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Tylenol may cause liver toxicity due to oxidative damage and decreased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/30-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-glutathione\/\">glutathione<\/a> content. In rats, globe artichoke extract administration<strong> protected against liver injury due to<\/strong> <strong>paracetamol overdose. <\/strong>The rats also had lowered DNA damage, more antioxidant enzymes, and higher glutathione levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25243875\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Although limited, the evidence suggests that artichoke extract may help protect the liver. Importantly, never use artichoke extract to replace any medications prescribed by your doctor if you have liver disease.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_for\"><a id=\"post-38440-_opz7t8uqdroa\"><\/a><strong>Insufficient Evidence for:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Antioxidant\"><a id=\"post-38440-_v0ft5py7firh\"><\/a><strong>1) Antioxidant<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Artichoke, especially the leaves, contains high levels of many antioxidant compounds, the main ones being chlorogenic acid, cynarin, and luteolin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22251096\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 22 rowers subjected to strenuous training, consuming artichoke leaf extract improved their total antioxidant capacity.
