It is one of the cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4164225\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>CYPs eliminate toxins and drugs from the human body. However, some, like C YP11B2, are not involved in detoxification but in steroid hormone production.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cyp-enzymes-interact-supplements-related-genes\/\">Read more about different CYPs here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Function\">Function<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This enzyme produces the hormone aldosterone (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28190867\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27935319\">R<\/a>). Aldosterone helps our bodies conserve sodium and maintain blood pressure (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19786005\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It also metabolizes steroid-based drugs spironolactone, canrenone (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27125452\">R<\/a>), and methandienone (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22885098\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Location\">Location<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This enzyme is found in the adrenal glands (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3040046\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Good\">The Good<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This enzyme is important for maintaining aldosterone levels. Aldosterone, in turn, maintains sodium and potassium in balance and helps maintain blood pH levels.<\/p>\n<p>Aldosterone deficiency due to CYP11B2 mutations can cause excessive sodium release and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/potassium\/\">potassium<\/a> retention, resulting in hyponatremia (low sodium), hyperkalemia (high <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/potassium\/\">potassium<\/a>), and metabolic acidosis, which can be fatal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3976226\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>CYP11B2 also helps maintain blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Milder enzyme deficiency is associated with postural hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing) in adulthood (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3976226\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Bad\">The Bad<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Higher enzyme activity can result in the overproduction of aldosterone.<\/p>\n<p>High levels of aldosterone lead to high blood pressure (hypertension) and increase the risk of heart disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18710464\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Gene_Polymorphism\">Gene Polymorphism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are over twenty CYP11B2 gene variants (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18710464\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some variants increase, while others decrease aldosterone production.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"RS1799998\">RS1799998<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/snp\/rs1799998\/\">rs1799998<\/a> (C) occurs in about 30% of African Americans and 46% of Europeans. This variant increases aldosterone levels (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3728110\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It is associated with high blood pressure (hypertension) (479 subjects; 810 subjects; 471 subjects; meta-analysis, 29 studies, 8482 cases, and 8560 controls) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27935319\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19786005\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12444540\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23204185\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This variant is further associated with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) (meta-analysis, 11 studies, 1629 cases, and 2284 controls) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25354523\">R<\/a>) and increases heart disease risk in Whites and Asians (meta-analysis, 5 studies, 3687 subjects) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25966076\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It may also increase the risk of stroke (meta-analysis, 7 studies, 2765 cases, and 3118 controls) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23748625\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>rs1799998 C may contribute to kidney disease (nephropathy) (meta-analysis, 5 studies, 825 cases and 910 controls) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27009287\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the C variant was also associated with higher BMI (290 subjects) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15643128\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Men with this variant are more prone to metabolic syndrome (802 couples, 640 subjects) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17261471\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4106537\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Having two Cs (C\/C) contributes to an age-dependent increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/c-reactive-protein\/\">CRP<\/a>, an indicator of chronic inflammation (398 subjects) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20094057\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>C\/C female carriers accumulate more fat and may be more prone to obesity (1386 subjects) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17762647\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, T\/T increases the risk of recurrent brain ischemia (low brain oxygen) by 1.98-fold (208 patients) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23701507\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The T variant and lower aldosterone levels are more often found in Himalayan people.
