These are <strong>enzymes that eliminate most of the drugs and toxins<\/strong> from the human body (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4164225\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cyp-enzymes-interact-supplements-related-genes\/\">Read more about CYPs here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"CYP2A6_Function\">CYP2A6 Function<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This enzyme metabolizes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/28-proven-health-benefits-nicotine-4-potential-risks\/\">Nicotine<\/a>, the main active component in cigarette smoke (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27815364\">R<\/a>). About 90% of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/28-proven-health-benefits-nicotine-4-potential-risks\/\">nicotine<\/a> is processed by this enzyme (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1359644603027041\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Hormones and internal molecules, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/importance-real-vitamin-retinol\/\">retinoic acid<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/testosterone-will-add\/\">testosterone<\/a>, estradiol, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-21-science-based-health-benefits-progesterone-4-drawbacks\/\">progesterone<\/a>. But the contribution of CYP2A6 activity is minor in their overall pathways (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Coumarin (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2014580\/\">R<\/a>), found in plants.<\/li>\n<li>Nitrosamines and aflatoxin B1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2682568\/\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor used to treat breast cancer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4810772\/\">R<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"CYP2A6_Location\">CYP2A6 Location<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This enzyme is mainly found in the liver. It accounts for about 10% of the total liver CYP enzyme content (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At much lower levels, it can be found in some other tissues, especially the mucous lining of the nose (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some people completely lack the functional CYP2A6 gene and enzyme<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"CYP2A6_The_Bad\">CYP2A6 The Bad<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is a clear link between CYP2A6 enzyme activity, smoking behavior, and lung cancer risk (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This enzyme can activate several cancer-causing agents found in tobacco smoke and diet, such as nitrosamines (e.g. NNK) and aflatoxins (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2014580\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Several studies show that gene variants that decrease this enzyme&#8217;s activity also decrease the risk of lung cancer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5014092\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The activity of this enzyme can contribute to liver damage. A study showed that being a CYP2A6 poor metabolizer type (having lower enzyme activity) protects against liver cirrhosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2014580\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"CYP2A6_Gene_Polymorphism\"><span id=\"CYP2A6_Genetics\">CYP2A6 Gene Polymorphism<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This gene has around 40 variants (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The activity of this enzyme can vary up to 12-fold, based on the particular gene variant (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4810772\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Slow CYP2A6 metabolism (low activity) is associated with lower cigarette consumption, lower dependence, and higher cessation rates in adults (421 subjects) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4698159\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, slow metabolism was also associated with more cigarettes smoked per day and a greater dependence in adolescents (296 smokers) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4723673\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4698159\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some people completely lack this gene (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22706231\">R<\/a>).
