CYP1B1 deficiency results in increased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> in mice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4972894\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Also, this enzyme is important for eye development (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3596501\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4779945\/\"> R<\/a>). Many mutations in CYP1B1 cause primary congenital glaucoma (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4779945\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5070572\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This enzyme can protect from cancer. CYP1B1 deficient mice have more lung tumors (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26990437\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potentially_Detrimental_Functions\"><a id=\"post-36431-_8hyn3uz85dn\"><\/a><strong>Potentially Detrimental Functions<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This enzyme is produced by fat tissue, and it helps increase fat uptake (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4455350\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In mice, CYP1B1 deficiency increases <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-ampk-activators\/\">AMPK<\/a>, reduces<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/132-biological-mechanisms-for-weight-modulation\/\"> obesity<\/a>, reduces blood pressure, and improves <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a> tolerance (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4455350\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4018097\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, this enzyme is capable of activating a wide range of cancer-causing compounds.
