It increases attention, improves cognitive function, and stimulates our creativity. It makes us more social and extroverted and helps us form romantic and parental bonds. However, dopamine, when too high, can also have detrimental effects.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Dopamine\">What Is Dopamine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, which is a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9457173\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Many areas of the brain produce dopamine. It is produced in the ventral tegmental area (VTA in the image above) of the midbrain, the substantia nigra pars compacta, and the arcuate nucleus of the<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hypothalamus-101\/\"> hypothalamus<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Dopamine-Functions.aspx\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Functions\">Functions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The most important dopamine pathway in the brain controls reward-motivated behavior (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9457173\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Most types of rewards, such as new experiences or accomplishments can increase dopamine levels in the brain, according to some scientists. In addition, most addictive drugs and behavioral addictions increase dopamine in certain parts of the brain (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dopamine\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Dopamine has many other important roles in humans, including movement, memory, attention, learning,<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\"> sleep<\/a>, and mood (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Dopamine-Functions.aspx\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Scientists believe that dysfunctions of the dopamine system contribute to Parkinson\u2019s disease, schizophrenia, restless legs syndrome, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9457173\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dopamine\/\">Read more about the benefits and drawbacks of dopamine here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Ways_to_Increase_Dopamine\">Ways to Increase Dopamine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you think you have \u201clow dopamine,\u201d speak with your doctor. Scientists hypothesize that this may partially be due to dopamine.
