Neurological symptoms of copper deficiency include central nervous system demyelination, polyneuropathy (nerve damage), spasticity, muscle weakness, and inflammation of the optic nerve (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2077729\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12427906\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Myelopathy (disease of the spinal cord) occurs in copper-deficient individuals and presents with walking difficulties (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14676057\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3691478\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Neurologic manifestations are generally attributed to decreased levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/molecular-function\/GO:0004129\/\">cytochrome C oxidase<\/a> and may be similar to those observed with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vitamin-b12\/\"> vitamin <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/thiamine\/\">B1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/vitamin-b12\/\">2<\/a> deficiency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4612215\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/jn.nutrition.org\/content\/109\/11\/1979.full.pdf+html?ijkey=10c06f494290c42d6f5227d612d9970e416f4203&amp;keytype2=tf_ipsecsha\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>These symptoms can significantly improve after oral copper supplementation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4612215\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15249607\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Heart_Disease\"><a id=\"post-34414-_cis8sv9hu3zg\"><\/a>5) Heart Disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Severe copper deficiency in rats altered heart function and caused enlargement of the heart which may lead to congestive heart failure (<a href=\"http:\/\/jn.nutrition.org\/content\/135\/9\/2130.long\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7675797\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12876300\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Also, reduced dilation of blood vessels and increased bleeding were associated with reduced copper intake in rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10619699\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7769369\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Men fed with diets low in copper experienced irregular heart rhythms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/4025196\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Low copper may also be associated with high blood pressure. People with essential hypertension had lower blood copper levels compared to people with normal blood pressure (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9746113\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that copper deficiency increases plasma <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\">cholesterol<\/a> and \u201cbad\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ldl-cholesterol\/\">LDL<\/a>-cholesterol while decreasing \u201cgood\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/hdl-cholesterol\/\">HDL<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/\"> cholesterol<\/a>, thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3316944\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Pale_Skin\"><a id=\"post-34414-_5is5wfwnp150\"><\/a>6) Pale Skin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Copper is a cofactor of the enzyme<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/tyr\/\"> tyrosinase<\/a>, which is required for the formation of the pigment melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives color to the hair, skin, and eyes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/9782\/chapter\/4\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1600517\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Decreased pigmentation of the skin and general pallor of copper-deficient infants can be attributed to decreased copper levels (<a href=\"http:\/\/jn.nutrition.org\/content\/109\/11\/1979.full.pdf+html?ijkey=10c06f494290c42d6f5227d612d9970e416f4203&amp;keytype2=tf_ipsecsha\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Hair_Loss\"><a id=\"post-34414-_vepxooy8rj3r\"><\/a>7) Hair Loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Copper is important for hair growth (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17703734\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Copper concentrations were reduced in men with hair loss comparing to those without hair loss (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24746780\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Hypothyroidism\"><a id=\"post-34414-_2w9u5i5kcqj2\"><\/a>8) Hypothyroidism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Severe copper deficiency is associated with impaired thyroid hormone metabolism (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/0955286395000625\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8116544\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Copper deficiency reduced blood total<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/thyroid-hormones-t4t3\/\"> T3<\/a> by 48%, blood total<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/thyroid-hormones-t4t3\/\"> T4<\/a> by 21%, and whole-brain <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/thyroid-hormones-t4t3\/\">T3<\/a> by 10% in newborn rats (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2940517\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Copper deficiency also reduces the conversion of T4 to T3, the latter of which is the more potent thyroid hormone (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/0955286395000625\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Copper_Status_Tests\"><a id=\"post-34414-_1t8gk7r3h6jn\"><\/a><strong>Copper Status Tests<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Blood_Copper\"><a id=\"post-34414-_yspxw2ryrbed\"><\/a><strong>1) Blood Copper<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Blood copper concentration is the most widely used laboratory test to evaluate copper status.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-34414-_nvqge1aege5p\"><\/a><strong>Total Blood Copper<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This test measures the total amount of copper in the blood.<\/p>\n<p>Normally 65 &#8211;
