Relatively high doses of <em>lithium carbonate<\/em> are commonly used to treat mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. Lithium also appears to support the immune system and protect the brain. But what\u2019s the difference between <em>lithium carbonate<\/em> and <em>lithium orotate<\/em>? How effective are high doses, low doses, and &#8220;micro-doses&#8221;? Read on to get to the bottom of the lithium controversy!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Lithium\"><b>What is Lithium?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Overview\">Overview<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lithium is classified as an essential micronutrient, which means that all humans require it in small doses for good health [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11601880\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Lithium carbonate is typically used at high doses and requires a doctor\u2019s prescription and <\/span>careful monitoring of <a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lithium-test\/\">blood lithium levels<\/a><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Popular blogs claim that lithium has a number of benefits unrelated to its use as a high-dose pharmaceutical. But what does the science say?<\/p>\n<p><b>Despite the hype, there is currently <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">insufficient evidence<\/span> to determine the effectiveness and safety of lithium when used at lower doses<\/b>. However, early research shows some promise.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <em>lithium orotate<\/em> is relatively poorly-researched, and its safety (both in the short and long term) has not been determined. Its alleged health benefits and supposedly enhanced bioavailability in the brain have never been directly proven by clinical trials [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/4607169\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26768\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <strong>lithium orotate supplements have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> been officially approved by the FDA for any medical use or other health application.<\/strong> Supplements generally lack solid clinical research: regulations set manufacturing standards for them, but don\u2019t guarantee that they\u2019re safe or effective. <strong>Always make sure to speak with your doctor before supplementing with any new compounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With those important points in mind, in this post we\u2019ll be focusing on <em>lithium orotate<\/em> and the purported benefits of low-dose lithium in general; but we\u2019ll still go over the main uses of high-dose, prescription lithium (<em>lithium carbonate<\/em>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Lithium is classified as an essential nutrient, and some of its salts are naturally found in food and drinking water. However, <em>lithium orotate<\/em>, specifically, is not found in nature &#8212; and its effects and overall safety in human users are currently unknown. Therefore, it&#8217;s important to be skeptical of many of the claims that lithium&#8217;s proponents often make about supplemental lithium online, as many of these effects have not yet been directly backed up by proper scientific studies.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Snapshot\"><b>Snapshot<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Proponents say:<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Prescription lithium <em>(lithium carbonate<\/em>) is effective for bipolar and possibly effective for depression, ADHD, and schizophrenia<\/li>\n<li>Lithium allegedly protects the brain<\/li>\n<li>Trace amounts of lithium have been hypothesized to potentially help prevent mental disorders, and reduce aggression and impulsiveness<\/li>\n<li>Low doses are somewhat researched in depression, and some early evidence suggests potential effectiveness<\/li>\n<li>Ongoing research is currently exploring lithium&#8217;s potential effects on cellular repair, neurogenesis, and overall lifespan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>CONs:<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Safety and effectiveness of <em>lithium orotate<\/em> is currently unknown<\/li>\n<li>Effectiveness of low-dose lithium is currently unknown<\/li>\n<li>May have the potential to cause adverse side-effects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Uses_of_High-Dose_Lithium_Carbonate\"><b>Uses of High-Dose Lithium Carbonate<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before we go over the research behind <em>lithium orotate<\/em> and low-dose lithium, let\u2019s review what high-dose, prescription <em>lithium carbonate<\/em> is used for.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, psychiatric disorders are generally believed to exist on a spectrum. Similarly, some scientists think that the effects of lithium also arise on a dosage spectrum. It is one of the oldest drugs for treating bipolar disorder, and is still the preferred medical treatment for this condition to this day [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28437764\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16834956\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lithium is FDA-approved for use in the treatment of bipolar disorder.<\/strong> It is used to treat acute mania or depression in patients with bipolar disorder, as well as to prevent the recurrence of manic episodes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2011\/017812s028,018421s027lbl.pdf\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>If you have bipolar disorder, your doctor will target a very specific lithium blood level. This \u201cnormal level\u201d of lithium (better known as the &#8220;<em>therapeutic level<\/em>&#8220;) is carefully determined and calculated by doctors to provide relief from symptoms, while also minimizing the possibility of negative side-effects [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28437764\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Possibly_Effective_For\">Possibly Effective For&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Depression\">2) Depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lithium is used &#8220;off-label&#8221; for depression. Although it\u2019s not officially FDA-approved for this medical application, some evidence suggests that it is effective in some patients with certain forms of depression. However, other antidepressants are typically prescribed before lithium treatment is tried (in other words, lithium is only used for patients who haven&#8217;t successfully responded to more conventional forms of antidepressant treatment).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, lithium is sometimes &#8220;added on&#8221; to treatment alongside more conventional antidepressants (such as SSRIs). However, the evidence in support of these &#8220;combined uses&#8221; is mixed.<\/p>\n<p>One meta-analysis of clinical trials concluded that prescription lithium did not significantly help in preventing suicide in in patients with bipolar disorder or depression, when compared to a placebo. However, once the authors revised the data to exclude one especially low-quality study, they suggested that lithium may reduce suicide risk better than placebo after all [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28428338\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25326163\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Two other meta-analyses have suggested that adding lithium to certain types of antidepressants (&#8220;tricyclics&#8221; and &#8220;second-generation&#8221; antidepressants, such as <em>desipramine<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/venlafaxine\/\"><em>venlafaxine<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/uses-of-trazodone\/\"><em>trazodone<\/em><\/a>, and <em>bupropion<\/em>) may help improve symptoms of depression in some patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25069082\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16816227\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_ADHD\">3) ADHD<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some early clinical research suggests that prescription lithium might reduce <em>impulsive-aggressive behaviors<\/em> associated with ADHD. However, the researchers took care to point out that lithium should only be used after other medications have been tried and failed to work. Additional, large-scale studies are needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12154153\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Schizophrenia\">4) Schizophrenia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lithium is sometimes added to antipsychotic drugs for treating schizophrenia (also known as &#8220;<em>add-on<\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;<i>augmented<\/i>&#8221; treatment).<\/p>\n<p>While some evidence supports this application, it is also widely believed that lithium should not be used as the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">only<\/span> medication in these patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26509923\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some clinical studies suggest that this add-on approach might improve symptoms in people prescribed &#8220;first-generation&#8221; antipsychotics (such as <em>chlorpromazine<\/em>, <em>haloperidol<\/em>, and <em>fluphenazine<\/em>). Additional studies suggest that lithium should not be added to second-generation antipsychotics (such as <em>risperidone<\/em>, <em>olanzapine<\/em>, and <em>clozapine<\/em>)\u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26509923\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30446357\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The available studies about lithium augmentation have several limitations. Larger, better-designed clinical trials are warranted.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_Benefits_of_Low-Dose_Lithium\"><b>Potential Benefits of Low-Dose Lithium<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality clinical studies.\u00a0<b>There is currently <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">insufficient evidence<\/span> to support the use of low-dose lithium for any of the uses discussed below.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Remember that &#8220;low-dose&#8221; (&#8220;<em>sub-therapeutic<\/em>&#8220;) lithium refers to <em>lithium carbonate<\/em> doses of between 150-200 mg\/day. While these doses are considerably lower than those used in other medical applications of <em>lithium carbonate<\/em>, <strong>&#8220;low-dose&#8221; lithium still requires a doctor\u2019s prescription<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For\">Insufficient Evidence For&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Depression\">1) Depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Prescription lithium is sometimes added to antidepressants when treating patients who haven&#8217;t successfully responded to conventional antidepressants (such as SSRIs) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10826662\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>Some early research suggests that adding &#8220;low&#8221; doses of lithium may also have an effect in depression treatment, though proper full-scale clinical trials are currently lacking.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One study examined 51 patients with depression who did not respond to treatment with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/venlafaxine\/\">venlafaxine<\/a><\/em> (a commonly-prescribed antidepressant medication). When low-dose lithium was added to their normal venlafaxine treatment, about half of the patients reported improvements in their symptoms [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22796912\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>While this early finding is promising, much more research will still be needed to verify and extend these early reports.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Dementia_Prevention\">2) Dementia Prevention<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After testing &#8220;micro-doses&#8221; of lithium, a Brazilian research team investigated sub-therapeutic lithium in a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial in 45 patients with <em>mild cognitive impairment<\/em> (MCI). Sub-therapeutic lithium was reported to delay the progression of MCI into dementia over the one-year course of the tested treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21525519\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The patients received 150-600 mg of lithium carbonate daily. The dose was adjusted (&#8220;<em>titrated<\/em>&#8220;) to cause &#8220;sub-therapeutic&#8221; blood levels of lithium (0.25\u20130.5 mmol\/L) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21525519\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, these findings have never been replicated. Large-scale, multi-center trials are warranted.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Headaches\">3) Headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Despite some promising findings, no large-scale studies have investigated the effects of low-dose lithium on headaches. Its effectiveness for this indication is still unknown. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>One review of multiple preliminary small-scale studies has reported that lithium may reduce the severity of <em>cluster headaches<\/em> &#8212; a rare, but severe type of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">headache<\/a>. Subtherapeutic levels of lithium (0.4 to 1.0 mmol\/L in the blood) were reported to improve symptoms in many of the tested patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?cluster=4873541576572417767&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=0,48\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to one theory, lithium may also help in <em>hypnic headache<\/em> (sometimes called \u201c<em>alarm-clock headaches<\/em>\u201d). This rare type of headache usually affects the elderly, waking them from sleep at around the same time each night [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1891726\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Huntingtons_Disease\">4) Huntington&#8217;s Disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Some doctors prescribe low doses of lithium &#8220;off-label&#8221; in Huntington\u2019s disease, although there is currently insufficient clinical data to support this practice<\/b>. It mostly relies on clinical experience. Human studies are needed.<\/p>\n<p>One series of case studies has reported that low-dose lithium (150 mg) improved movement and behavioral symptoms in 3 patients with Huntington\u2019s disease. However, we can\u2019t draw any conclusions about effectiveness or safety from a couple of limited cases: large-scale clinical trials are needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3574462\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One low-dose lithium formulation is currently in development for the treatment of Huntington\u2019s. Preliminary animal studies suggest that this new drug may improve motor function and prevent brain cell death, although clinical data are still lacking [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22796360\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Purported_Benefits_of_Lithium_Micro-doses_Lithium_Orotate\"><b>Purported Benefits of Lithium &#8220;Micro-doses&#8221; \/ Lithium Orotate <\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following purported benefits are only supported by limited, low-quality human studies. Most of the studies on trace amounts of lithium were epidemiological association studies. These types of studies can suggest a potential connection, but cannot establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship.<\/p>\n<p><b>Therefore, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of lithium micro-doses for any of the uses listed below.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Additionally, clinical data on lithium orotate are completely lacking<\/b>. Its safety profile is unknown, and proponents of these applications typically rely just on a couple of old animal studies to make their claims. Therefore, we currently recommend <em>against<\/em> using this form of lithium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Always remember to speak with your doctor before taking lithium supplements.<\/strong> Lithium supplements and other &#8220;complementary health strategies&#8221; should <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">never<\/span> be used as a replacement for conventional medical care, or for prescription lithium or any other treatments your doctor has recommended.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Insufficient_Evidence_For-2\">Insufficient Evidence For&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Reducing_Suicide_Risk\">1) Reducing Suicide Risk<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lithium may have unique effects on suicidal behavior. Limited evidence suggests that prescription lithium reduces suicide risk in people with mood disorders better than some antidepressant and antipsychotic medications [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4504869\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12971012\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some scientists think that low doses of lithium may also reduce suicides, but proper clinical trials are lacking. Nonetheless, some epidemiological studies have reported a potential link between trace amounts of lithium in ground-water and lower suicide rates [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23312137\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Higher lithium levels in public drinking water have also been linked to lower suicide rates, according to one other study looking at water samples from 226 counties in Texas [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23312137\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A similar association between lithium levels and suicide rates has been brought up in multiple countries, including Japan, Italy, Lithuania, and Greece [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3863886\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26230215\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28385387\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24072668\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, a 22-year long study following close to 4 million adults in Denmark did not find a link between lithium and suicide risk. The authors proposed that this may be explained by Denmark\u2019s low average level of lithium in drinking water, which was about 12 micrograms per liter. More large-scale studies are needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5486313\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Living in areas with higher concentrations of lithium in the drinking water has been linked to lower suicide rates in some studies, although the findings reported so far have been inconsistent.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Reducing_Criminal_Behavior\">2) Reducing Criminal Behavior<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s the most intriguing part: lithium seems to make people more &#8220;mellow&#8221; and &#8220;easy-going&#8221; &#8212; that is, scientists suspect it makes people less likely to engage in behavior that might put them in jail. Lithium deficiency, on the other hand, has been linked to increased aggression and violent behavior [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30605431\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26968907\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, the link between lithium and aggression is still purely hypothetical. It hasn\u2019t been proven in proper human studies.<\/p>\n<p>This makes people wonder: do communities of more peaceful, less aggressive, less impulsive, and happier people around the world all have more lithium in their water and food? Of course, we know that it can\u2019t be as simple as that: but lithium still may turn out to be at least a part of the equation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30605431\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26968907\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It may sound silly to some people, but studies do point to a potential connection between lithium and criminal behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Some researchers claim that areas with higher concentrations of lithium in the drinking water have lower rates of homicide, rape, and theft. This is according to a study looking at 9 years&#8217; worth of data from 27 counties in Texas [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1699579\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A study performed in Greece reported similar results. Cities with higher levels of lithium in the public water supply also seemed to have lower incidence rates of homicide, rape, and drug abuse [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25556933\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>What could explain this link?<\/p>\n<p>The connection between low lithium and criminal behavior is not totally understood, but scientists hypothesize that lithium\u2019s ability to improve impulse control may play a role [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30605431\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Some intriguing evidence from epidemiological association studies suggests a potential link between lithium and aggressive behavior &#8212; at least when looking across very large numbers of people in the general population. However, these findings only indicate a possible <em>association<\/em>, and do not yet support any direct <em>cause-and-effect<\/em> relationship between the two. Much more research will be needed to fully understand this potential relationship, and what it might mean.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Cognition_Dementia_Prevention\">3) Cognition &amp; Dementia Prevention<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>There is insufficient evidence to confirm a link between higher lithium levels and lower rates of dementia<\/b>, though early findings are intriguing. Nonetheless, additional large-scale clinical trials will still be needed.<\/p>\n<p>A very large-scale study performed in Denmark compared drinking water samples from over 800,000 people. This study reported that people drinking water with higher amounts of lithium appeared to show relatively lower rates of dementia (compared to people whose drinking water contained less lithium) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28832877\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Higher lithium levels in drinking water have also been linked with a lower risk of death in Alzheimer\u2019s patients, according to one other study looking at water samples from 234 counties in Texas [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29103043\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The first study of a Brazilian team of scientists interested in the cognitive effects of lithium investigated &#8220;micro-doses&#8221; of lithium. They used 300 micrograms per day of elemental lithium over 15 months, which is about 1.5 mg of lithium carbonate &#8212; that\u2019s 100 times less than &#8220;low-dose&#8221; lithium treatments. They reported that this micro-dose may be associated with reduced cognitive impairments in Alzheimer\u2019s patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22746245\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, many people have criticized this study, calling it \u201csketchy\u201d and dismissing it as unreliable. However, the basis for some of these criticisms are unclear. This study does not appear to have any major methodological flaws: for example, it was placebo-controlled, and double-blinded. <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">However, it did have some more minor and subtle limitations, which have caused other scientists to be skeptical of its reported findings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Due to this skepticism, the Brazilian research team had to go back and pinpoint potential dementia-preventive mechanisms of lithium microdoses in animals. According to this research, they proposed that lithium may act by protecting brain cells from damage, as well as by possibly increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\">BDNF<\/a> levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4659557\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, these mechanisms were only shown in animals, and so it remains unclear whether these effects or mechanisms would be similar in human patients.<\/p>\n<p>To date, no other clinical studies have been conducted, and so much more additional research will be needed to confirm whether lithium has any significant potential therapeutic effects in neurodegenerative disorders.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Some very preliminary evidence might suggest that lithium could have some potential therapeutic applications in slowing down age- and disease-related cognitive decline. However, the current evidence is still too weak to come to any firm conclusions, and more research will be needed to confirm and extend these early findings.<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Alcoholism\">4) Alcoholism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One old study, published in 1982, treated 42 alcoholic patients with 150 mg lithium orotate daily for at least 6 months. The authors claimed that about 1\/3rd of the patients went 1-3 years without relapsing, and that a quarter of them went 3-10 years without relapse [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3718672\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The same study reported some mild side effects, including muscle weakness, loss of appetite, and mild apathy. However, these were said to have disappeared when the supplement was given less frequently [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3718672\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, these early findings were never replicated by any follow-up studies, so no firm conclusions can be made until much more additional research is available.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Preventing_Mental_Disorders\">5) Preventing Mental Disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As a prescription medication, lithium is used to treat several psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorder, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">depression<\/a>, and schizophrenia [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28437764\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10826662\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12917990\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The purported benefits of supplemental lithium on mental health, however, are not clear. Old and unreliable reports suggest it might help prevent certain mental disorders. <b>However, no proper, modern-day trials are available<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29685207\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One curious phenomenon dates over a hundred years back. It\u2019s known as the \u201ccrazy waters\u201d of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>However, keep in mind that this story is <em>purely anecdotal<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>While many mineral springs contain lithium, the Mineral Wells in Texas became famously known as \u201c<em>crazy waters<\/em>.\u201d Texas had many mineral water resorts back in the 19th century; and thousands of \u201ccrazy\u201d people and those with various chronic health problems used to travel to these springs in order to get the \u201chealing benefits of lithium.\u201d Others reported good health just from living nearby [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3712976\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also one anecdotal case from France in the 1930&#8217;s. The French physician Dr. Reyss-Brion recalls that a preparation called \u201c<em>Dr. Gustin\u2019s Lithium<\/em>\u201d was especially popular in southern France around that time: \u201cIt\u2019s quite simply for that reason that you don\u2019t have a lot of manic-depressives in Marseilles,\u201d he said [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3712976\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Only one recent study provides us with partial clues. According to one survey of over 3,000 Japanese students, those with higher levels of lithium in their local tap water reported fewer symptoms of depression. However, this association was not confirmed by additional follow-up studies, suggesting that this reported finding may not be genuine [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28394506\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Anecdotes aside, we\u2019re still missing hard evidence about the effects of trace amounts of lithium on preventing mental disorders like depression and bipolar.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">According to some purely anecdotal evidence, exposure to relatively low- or trace amounts of lithium &#8212; such as from one&#8217;s drinking water supply &#8212; has been reported to reduce the rates of serious psychiatric disorders in certain populations. However, direct scientific evidence for this effect is lacking, and so the potential relationship between lithium and mental health is still unclear and highly controversial.<\/div><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Lithium_Uses_Lacking_Evidence\">Lithium Uses Lacking Evidence<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Summary_of_Animal_Cell-Based_Research\">Summary of Animal &amp; Cell-Based Research<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>No clinical evidence supports the use of lithium for any of the conditions listed in this section. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, <strong>the studies listed below should <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>1) Increasing Lifespan<\/h4>\n<p>The effects of lithium on overall <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lifestyle-diet-increase-longevity\/\">longevity<\/a> in humans are currently unknown.<\/p>\n<p>One study in Texas found an association between higher trace levels of lithium in tap water and lower rates of death by any cause. However, no other human studies to date have investigated or followed up on this potential link [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29206474\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>According to some scientists, future studies should determine whether lithium can increase the length of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/telomerase-telomeres-aging\/\"><em>telomeres<\/em><\/a> &#8212; small proteins that cap DNA-holding chromosomes, and which have been widely implicated in the human aging process [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5854802\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30559463\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26621262\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The longer telomeres are, the more &#8220;leeway&#8221; cells have to divide. Some researchers have described the length of telomeres as something like the sand in the top part of a lifespan hourglass &#8212; the more people have, the more &#8220;time&#8221; they have left. This is just one hypothesis, though &#8212; and it\u2019s still unverified [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3370421\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other scientists say that lithium may improve mitochondrial turnover, which maintains healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/mitochondria\/\">mitochondria<\/a>. However, this effect has only been reported in roundworms. Additionally, mitochondrial health has only been linked to lifespan by a handful of limited studies, so this connection remains unconfirmed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24398558\">R, R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Scientists are investigating whether lithium can extend the length of telomeres, but no human data are available.<\/div><\/div>\n<h4>2) Brain Protection<\/h4>\n<p>Although some online proponents have claimed that low &#8220;supplemental&#8221; doses of lithium can help protect the brain, direct evidence in support of such effects in humans are completely lacking so far.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary reports from a few animal studies may suggest that sub-therapeutic lithium could potentially block NMDA receptors, which could theoretically prevent cellular damage caused by excess <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glutamate\/\">glutamate<\/a> activity (<em>excitotoxicity<\/em>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11841566\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27444123\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26894301\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, it remains unknown whether similar mechanisms might apply to humans, and so this effect is still mostly hypothetical.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are also exploring whether lithium inhibits <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gsk3b-inhibition-potent-pathway-improve-brain-function-mood\/\">GSK-3<\/a>, an enzyme that plays several critical roles in energy metabolism, cell growth, and the immune system. Overactivity of GSK-3 has been tentatively associated with a number of diseases, including bipolar disorder and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alzheimer\/\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease. Blocking GSK-3 could theoretically prevent the death of brain cells (<em>apoptosis<\/em>), although human studies would need to confirm this [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2020444\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5751281\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other research teams are investigating the potential effects of low doses of lithium for preventing some of the toxic effects of lead exposure [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29685207\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27259346\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">While some people claim that lithium has beneficial &#8220;neuro-protective&#8221; effects on the brain, no scientific studies have directly confirmed or supported these claims. While some cell- and animal studies suggest a few potential &#8220;neuro-protective&#8221; mechanisms of lithium, these suggestions are still unproven in humans, and are mostly theoretical or hypothetical.<\/div><\/div>\n<h4>3) Cell Growth and Repair<\/h4>\n<p>Basic science suggests that cells depend on lithium for proper development and repair, but this hasn\u2019t been confirmed in humans.<\/p>\n<p>For example, one animal study in rats has reported that lithium increased the concentration of <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-natural-ways-to-increase-bdnf\/\">BDNF<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-nerve-growth-factor-and-50-ways-to-increase-it\/\">NGF<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gdnf\/\">GDNF<\/a> throughout the brain. These compounds are commonly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/can-regrow-brain\/\"><em>neurotrophic factors<\/em><\/a>, meaning that they directly stimulate the growth of the brain and its cells\u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12974988\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Neurotrophic factors increase the birth of new neurons to, theoretically, help <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/can-regrow-brain\/\">\u201cregrow\u201d the brain<\/a> and repair brain damage. The birth of new brain cells is called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ways-increase-neurogenesis\/\">neurogenesis<\/a><\/em>, and some researchers believe it\u2019s important for recovering from mental illness [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5008067\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, these neurotrophic factors might also increase <em><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/synaptic-plasticity\/\">neuroplasticity<\/a><\/em>, the brain\u2019s ability to make new connections and adapt throughout life [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3172812\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nonetheless, the potential effect of lithium on neurotrophic factors in humans remains purely speculative, and hasn&#8217;t been directly confirmed by any scientific research so far.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Research on human cells is also currently investigating whether sub-therapeutic levels of lithium (0.2 mmol\/L) may help increase <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-vegf-good-bad\/\">VEGF<\/a>, another type of growth factor that affects blood vessels. This could hypothetically help with the repairing of blood vessels after a brain injury, such as a stroke, although much more research will be needed to confirm this potential effect [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18974377\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Growth factors aren\u2019t the only area of research. Several studies are looking at whether lithium stimulates stem cells in the blood, brain, and bones, which have been implicated in tissue repair after injury [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26922521\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19523343\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There are also some research teams looking at how lithium impacts <b>autophagy<\/b> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3172812\">R<\/a>]. &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/everything-wanted-know-autophagy\/\">Autophagy<\/a><\/em>&#8221; translates to &#8220;self-eating,&#8221; and it\u2019s biologically equivalent to a \u201cdetox\u201d from a cellular perspective. Autophagy takes old cell material, recycles it, and re-uses the components. This process is believed to play a key role in regenerating aging cells and preventing diseases &#8212; and it\u2019s this process is therefore believed to be a key player in determining overall lifespan and longevity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2990190\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29370695\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<div class=\"sh-summary\"><div class=\"sh-summary-content\">Some very preliminary evidence from animal- and cell studies suggests that lithium may stimulate a variety of growth factors involved in brain- and bodily health. Nonetheless, much more research will be needed to confirm these possible effects in humans, as well as to uncover the potential biological mechanisms involved.<\/div><\/div>\n<h4>4) Insulin Resistance<\/h4>\n<p>According to some highly preliminary research, lithium may improve <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a> transport and glycogen synthesis in <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-tips-for-fixing-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin-resistant<\/a> rats. <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Based on these preliminary findings, the authors of the above study have suggested that lithium should be further studied in patients with diabetes and insulin resistance [<\/span><a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2633930\/\">R<\/a><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, lithium&#8217;s potential effects on insulin resistance in humans currently remains unknown and unconfirmed.<\/p>\n<h4>5) Bone Health<\/h4>\n<p>Some early research in animals suggests that lithium may decrease the risk of bone fractures and promote bone growth. However, the effects of supplemental doses of lithium on bone health in humans have not yet been explored further, and more research will be needed before this effect can be confirmed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1297659\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18690999\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Limited human studies have revealed some benefits to bone health with prescription doses of lithium. More research is needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18992857\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9814458\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4>6) Autoimmunity and Inflammation<\/h4>\n<p>Lithium may interact with the immune system through several different potential mechanisms. Scientists are currently investigating how lithium might affect the following pathways in cells or animals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inhibiting <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gsk3b-inhibition-potent-pathway-improve-brain-function-mood\/\">GSK-3<\/a>, which might theoretically reduce autoimmunity (conditions in which the immune system &#8220;attacks&#8221; the body&#8217;s own tissues and organs) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3532311\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li>Increasing the production of IgG and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/immunoglobulin-m\/\">IgM<\/a> antibodies, while also potentially decreasing the activity of inflammatory <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/prostaglandins\/\">prostaglandins<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6286192\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/0006295274902159\"> R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li>Suppressing <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a> cells and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interferon-gamma-how-to-increase-decrease-high-low-levels\/\">interferon-gamma<\/a> (but not <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\">Th17<\/a> cells) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3532311\/\">R<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nonetheless, these mechanisms have so far only been studied in animals and cells, and have not yet been investigated or confirmed in humans.<\/p>\n<h4>7) Sleep<\/h4>\n<p>Based on a handful of preliminary animal and cell studies, some scientists have proposed that lithium may have some notable effects on the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-keep-to-a-circadian-rhythm\/\">circadian rhythm<\/a> (the body&#8217;s &#8220;master clock&#8221; that helps regulate sleep, digestion, and other important daily activities and processes).<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, lithium has been suggested to &#8220;lengthen&#8221; the circadian rhythm period, which could theoretically help treat some of the sleep issues and other problems that arise when the circadian rhythm is &#8220;desynchronized&#8221; from its normal 24-hour cycle [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5139912\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27478137\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Relatedly, some other researchers are currently investigating whether lithium may help activate the various genes and proteins involved in the sleep-wake cycle, which could therefore potentially help the body stay &#8220;in sync&#8221; with day- and night cycles. In short, t<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">his could point to a potential role of lithium in making the body and brain more sensitive to &#8220;<\/span><em><a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-keep-to-a-circadian-rhythm\/\">zeitgebers<\/a>,<\/em>&#8221; or <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">biological cues for the time of day. However, these early findings have not yet been confirmed in humans, and so much more research will still be needed to verify and extend them [<\/span><a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5139912\/\">R<\/a><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">, <\/span><a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27478137\">R<\/a><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Finally, a few clinical trials have reported that lithium medications may improve <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/health-benefits-sleep\/\">sleep<\/a> in bipolar patients. However, these findings pertain only to &#8220;high-dose&#8221; pharmaceutical forms of lithium &#8212; and whether they might also apply to lower-dose, &#8220;supplemental&#8221; forms of lithium remains unknown [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27318597\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3313443\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Limitations\"><b>Limitations<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Research on <em>lithium orotate<\/em> is very limited, and many studies are decades old.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, many of the purported benefits of <em>lithium orotate<\/em> are erroneously inferred from studies that actually looked at low-dose prescription <em>lithium carbonate<\/em> (also known as &#8220;sub-therapeutic&#8221; or &#8220;micro-dose&#8221; lithium).
