Learn about the many health complications of infection, plus treatment and prevention methods, here.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_Mycoplasma\"><a id=\"post-30458-_9hdzrne0ji7r\"><\/a><strong>What is Mycoplasma?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Mycoplasmas <\/em>are the smallest free-living microorganisms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3737868\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC233367\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>They belong to a class of bacteria called <em>Mollicutes<\/em>. Their name, which means \u201csoft skin,\u201d refers to the fact that they have no cell wall (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S1413-86702007000500012&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso&amp;tlng=en\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Lacking a cell wall, they are able to change shapes and resist antibiotics that act on a cell wall. They are considered \u201cGram negative\u201d because they do not respond to a bacterial Gram stain (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Mycoplasmas <\/em>have extremely small genome (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC146264\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Due to these features, <em>Mycoplasmas <\/em>require specific conditions for their growth and depend on the host for survival (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2627593\/pdf\/9126441.pdf\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Role_in_Human_Disease\"><a id=\"post-30458-_whq6ej2tm9m\"><\/a><strong>Role in Human Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>More than 200 <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>species have been identified in humans, animals, and plants (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18754792\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>16 <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>species are found in humans but only a few have been proven to cause human disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8399915\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Several <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>species including <em>M. salivarium, M. orale, M. buccale, M. faucium, <\/em>and<em> M. lipophilum <\/em>are normally found in the mouth and throat without causing disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8399915\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Of the <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>species known to infect man, <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>is the best-known cause of respiratory tract infections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21526943\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>They can also infect organs other than the lungs, including the nervous system, joints, skin, kidneys, heart, muscles, eyes, and blood [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3100660\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3128197\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6778283\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resmedjournal.com\/article\/S0007-0971(69)80032-X\/abstract\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>These infections can be seen before, during, or after lung disease or can occur without respiratory illness. <em>Mycoplasma hominis<\/em>, <em>Mycoplasma geni\u00adtalium, <\/em>and <em>Ureaplasma urealyticum<\/em>, commonly found in the urinary and genital tracts, have also been found to cause human disease (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.microbiologyresearch.org\/docserver\/fulltext\/micro\/10\/1\/mic-10-1-27.pdf?expires=1482609881&amp;id=id&amp;accname=guest&amp;checksum=7FA2BDC257C01B80D733DFE88A38AE99\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_Respiratory_Disease\"><a id=\"post-30458-_82xfjkmb2xoe\"><\/a><strong>1) Respiratory Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-30458-_qhc6isqotfp6\"><\/a>M. pneumoniae<\/h4>\n<p><em>M. pneumoniae<\/em>, initially known as \u201cEaton\u2019s agent,\u201d causes lung infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2135382\/pdf\/649.pdf\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4916212\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11979130\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJM199512143332408\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Infection is most frequent in children from 5 years of age to young adults (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4344269\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2516622\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The outbreaks occur in closed communities such as families, military bases, hospitals, and schools because close contact is needed for the spread of infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18754792\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/00022322.htm\"> R<\/a>)<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Worldwide epidemics occur in children and adults every 3 to 5 years, most commonly in late summer or early fall (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18754792\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 20% of infected persons have no symptoms. Around 75% have mild respiratory illnesses including chest <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/12-reasons-embrace-cold\/\">cold<\/a> (tracheobronchitis) and inflammation of the windpipe (tracheitis). Only 3 &#8211; 10% of patients develop atypical pneumonia, also called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/walking-pneumonia\/\">walking pneumonia<\/a>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6793535\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4344269\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma<\/em> causes 15% -20% of all pneumonias, and up to 40% of community-acquired pneumonias (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8399936\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2516622\"> R<\/a>)<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>People who have walking pneumonia are rarely confined to a bed or need to be hospitalized. Some may even feel well enough to go to work and carry on with other daily activities.<\/p>\n<p><em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> is spread through contaminated droplets from person to person by sneezing or coughing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6712054\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms include fever, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">headache<\/a>, cough, sore throat, chills, muscle aches, and weakness. These symptoms develop slowly, over several days to a week, often persisting for weeks to months (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3737868\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The cough is initially dry but later small amounts of greenish sputum are coughed up. The cough may also resemble pertussis, characterized by paroxysmal cough and vomiting, causing patients to complain of chest soreness from protracted coughing (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.atsjournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1164\/arrd.1968.97.3.345?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%3Dpubmed&amp;\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1518391\/?page=3\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Earache occurs in about 30% of patients, but inflammation of the ear canal (otitis externa) and inner ear (otitis media and bullous myringitis) are rare (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2893430\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3737868\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Children under 5 years of age are most likely to have symptoms of the common cold and wheezing (a whistling sound while breathing) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2893430\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Older children aged 5 to 15 years are more likely to develop pneumonia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11548186\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3286761\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Severe pneumonia, with multiple organ involvement and death, occurs in 0.5 &#8211; 2% of all M. pneumoniae pneumonia cases (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4888638\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Children with an impaired immune system have a greater risk of developing more severe pneumonia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/18134339_The_Unusual_Severity_of_Mycoplasmal_Pneumonia_in_Children_with_Sickle-Cell_Disease\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Studies suggest that severe disease can also occur in otherwise healthy children and adults of all ages (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3737868\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJM198101083040204\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Almost 50% of severe pneumonia cases occurred in patients aged 20 &#8211; 49 years, and 13.5% occurred in people over 70 years old (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4888638\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> infection may play an important role in the occurrence of asthma.<\/p>\n<p>It can precede the onset of asthma, worsen symptoms, and cause difficulties in controlling asthma (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4485268\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15579364\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2805928\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A study found that <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> was the cause of asthma attacks in 50% of hospitalized children, and was a worsening factor in 20% of them (<a href=\"http:\/\/cid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/38\/10\/1341.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-30458-_w3q6d52aljee\"><\/a>Other Mycoplasmas<\/h4>\n<p><em>M. hominis<\/em> and <em>U. urealyticum<\/em> have also been associated with pneumonia and respiratory distress syndrome in newborns (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/54632\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/344458\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>M. fermentans <\/em>has been found in the throats of 16% of children with community-acquired pneumonia (<a href=\"http:\/\/cid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/23\/4\/671.long\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It has also been detected in previously healthy adults who presented with an influenza-like illness that sometimes progressed into respiratory distress syndrome (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/4457245?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Genital_Tract_Infections\"><a id=\"post-30458-_x2w1895d657l\"><\/a><strong>2) Genital Tract Infections<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Infections caused by <em>M. hominis<\/em>, <em>M. genitalium<\/em>, and <em>U. urealyticum <\/em>are sexually transmitted infections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2564705\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iusti.org\/regions\/europe\/pdf\/2016\/2016EuropeanMycoplasmaGuidelines.pdf\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, <em>M. genitalium<\/em> infection was more common in people who had at least 4 new sexual partners in the past year compared to people who had 1 or less (<a href=\"http:\/\/ije.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/early\/2015\/10\/30\/ije.dyv194.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>M. genitalium<\/em> and <em>U. urealyticum<\/em> cause inflammation of the urethra (urethritis) in men (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3131060\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/pmid\/7721285\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1744340\/pdf\/v077p00229.pdf\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Men with infection experience burning, painful urination and discharge from the penis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3131060\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1744873\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/sti.bmj.com\/content\/80\/4\/289.full\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In women, <em>M. genitalium <\/em>is associated with cervical and urethral infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12599082\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1763725\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>40 &#8211; 75% of women with infection do not have any symptoms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1763725\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1745067\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Women experiencing symptoms have abnormal vaginal discharge, painful urination or urgency to urinate, and rarely, bleeding between menstrual periods or after sexual intercourse (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1763725\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1745067\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22483084\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Genital mycoplasmas can also cause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vaginal infection (bacterial vaginosis) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6689379\">R<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Pelvic inflammatory disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3312109\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1048060\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1745055\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11888591\"> R<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Infertility (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19322575\">R<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Sexually acquired reactive arthritis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1745067\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7889971\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/humrep.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/16\/9\/1866.long\"> R<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Preterm birth (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15663138\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25753079\"> R<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Spontaneous abortion (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/47945\">R<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Postpartum (after childbirth) and postabortion fever (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC473526\/pdf\/jclinpath00369-0079.pdf\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1518391\/pdf\/califmed00125-0037.pdf\"> R<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Arthritis\"><a id=\"post-30458-_t9b5s4vh9zlx\"><\/a><strong>3) Arthritis<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>is associated with arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and sexually transmitted reactive arthritis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2511303\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/viewdoc\/download?doi=10.1.1.589.9698&amp;rep=rep1&amp;type=pdf\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7889971\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Bone, joint, and muscle complications occur in approximately 14% of patients with acute <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>infection (<a href=\"http:\/\/cmr.asm.org\/content\/17\/4\/697.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>U. urealyticum<\/em> and <em>M. hominis<\/em> also caused septic arthritis in patients with a compromised immune system (hypogammaglobulinemia) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doiserbia.nb.rs\/img\/doi\/0042-8450\/2003\/0042-84500301005P.pdf\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/81929\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1005283\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A Canadian study showed an association between <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> infections and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7791175\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"sh-partner shp-form sponsored sh-et-7388fa\">\n  <div>\n          <div class=\"partner-heading\">8 Ways To Use Your DNA &amp; severe complications associated with <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16490040\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Studies also reported cases of neonatal meningitis and brain abscess caused by <em>M. hominis<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1107109\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1545224\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC273990\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC229559\/pdf\/350286.pdf\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Skin_Disease\"><a id=\"post-30458-_fcj7sl5v5h\"><\/a><strong>5) Skin Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Skin complications occur in approximately 25% of patients with <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> infections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Rashes (erythematous maculopapular, vesicular rashes), Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema nodosum, and ulcerative stomatitis commonly occur (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archbronconeumol.org\/en\/stevens-johnson-syndrome-associated-with-atypical\/articulo\/13050409\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1237178\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7419276\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In a study, <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>caused 42.1% of erythema multiforme cases (<a href=\"http:\/\/europepmc.org\/abstract\/med\/15599469\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some studies suggest that 7% of cases of <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> infection develop into Stevens-Johnson syndrome (characterized by severe rash, high fever, cold symptoms, and inflammation of mucosa) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8399937\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC473032\/?page=4\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archbronconeumol.org\/en\/stevens-johnson-syndrome-associated-with-atypical\/articulo\/13050409\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Skin rashes can also be caused by antibiotics commonly used to treat <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>respiratory infections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"6_Heart_Disease\"><a id=\"post-30458-_z4hplmb2b8zz\"><\/a><strong>6) Heart Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Heart complications associated with <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>occur in 1 &#8211; 8.5% of people with infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/113988\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The most frequent cardiovascular complications of <em>Mycoplasma<\/em> infection include inflammation of the heart (myocarditis) and a sac surrounding the heart (pericarditis), heart failure, and accumulation of fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion) (<a href=\"http:\/\/cmr.asm.org\/content\/17\/4\/697.full\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8399939\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/113988\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, patients following heart surgery developed inflammation of the inner lining of the heart (endocarditis), including heart valves, caused by <em>M. hominis <\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/cid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/38\/3\/e21.full.pdf\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11014630\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4540918\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Mycoplasma infection can also lead to a heart attack in rare cases (<a href=\"http:\/\/thescipub.com\/PDF\/ajisp.2009.84.88.pdf\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_Fatigue\"><a id=\"post-30458-_lipfd5vxvetf\"><\/a><strong>7) Fatigue<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection has been detected in about 50% of patients with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-real-heres-test\/\">chronic fatigue syndrome<\/a> (CFS) and\/or fibromyalgia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9879928\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.immed.org\/autoimmune\/06.16.12%20pdfs%20updates\/MedSentinel-GLNetal.-99.6.pdf\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In a European study, 68.6% of patients with CFS were infected with <em>Mycoplasma<\/em>, compared to 5.6% healthy subjects (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12423773\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Most patients recover after long-term antibiotic therapy, and the infection cannot be detected after recovery (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12879275\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Gulf_War_Illness\"><a id=\"post-30458-_vp7wzdic3d68\"><\/a><strong>8) Gulf War Illness<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Gulf War Illness comprises symptoms found in veterans of the Persian Gulf War, including <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/my-cutting-edge-protocol-to-cure-fatigue\/\">chronic fatigue<\/a>, joint and muscle <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a>, headaches, and skin rashes (<a Illness patients show evidence of <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infections compared to 6-9% in non-deployed, healthy subjects (<a href=\"https:\/\/consensus.nih.gov\/1994\/1994PersianGulfta014PDF.pdf\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Gulf War Illness was also transmitted from veterans with Gulf War Illness to immediate family members. 77% of symptoms that occur due to Lyme disease &#8211; such as fever, chills, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatment-migraines\/\">headache<\/a>, neck, muscle and joint pain, href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2627593\/pdf\/9126441.pdf\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"12_Blood_Disease\"><a id=\"post-30458-_jx4dl03p57e\"><\/a><strong>12) Blood Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>has been linked to hemolytic and aplastic anemia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, arterial thrombosis, and Reynaud&#8217;s syndrome (<a intravascular coagulation has also been reported (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11419512\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"13_Eye_Disease\"><a id=\"post-30458-_4bxxv4sq8vts\"><\/a><strong>13) Eye Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Eye infections caused by <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>are occasionally seen in children, and include conjunctivitis, anterior uveitis, optic neuropathy, retinitis, iritis, and optic disk swelling, with or without permanent damage of vision (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed?cmd=Retrieve&amp;db=PubMed&amp;list_uids=3283360&amp;dopt=Abstract\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/ndt.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/17\/3\/495.full.pdf\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>may cause deep wound infections that occurred shortly after kidney transplantation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4421214\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"15_Autoimmune_Disease\"><a id=\"post-30458-_wu9p2m3wq0k3\"><\/a><strong>15) Autoimmune Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to some researchers, the similarity between the <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>and human cell membranes may promote the production of autoantibodies that attack the R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>M. penetrans<\/em> is linked to Kaposi\u2019s sarcoma in homosexual men with AIDS (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8268356\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"17_Cancer\"><a id=\"post-30458-_yzlkg3ci7a6\"><\/a><strong>17) Cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Experimental studies showed that <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>can cause changes in chromosomes and cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/3\/1\/97-0103_article\">R<\/a>), potentially leading to cancer development.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection has also been linked to prostate of <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>Infections<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Development of <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection includes several factors:<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Adherence_factors\"><a id=\"post-30458-_taztnje68g4x\"><\/a><strong>Adherence factors<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection is caused by the close attachment of <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>to host epithelial cells by structure present on the surface of bacteria (adhesins) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The main adhesin P1 of <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> and the MgPa adhesin of <em>M. genitalium<\/em> are the best-studied adhesins in <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17127329\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC260479\/pdf\/iai00089-0116.pdf\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This close attachment prevents bacteria from being removed by the normal clearance mechanisms of the host\u2019s respiratory and genitourinary tract (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2633477\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/jb.asm.org\/content\/188\/24\/8627.full\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Toxic_Metabolic_Products\"><a id=\"post-30458-_wfrnxoru3wup\"><\/a><strong>Toxic Metabolic Products<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The close association of the <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>cells and the host cells increases the production of toxic products (hydrogen peroxide and superoxide) that id=\"post-30458-_x9j0mm8h8o0k\"><\/a><strong>Immune System Changes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>can activate macrophages, B-cell differentiation, and antibody production (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19366562\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2633477\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/trends\/microbiology\/abstract\/S0966-842X(99)01641-8\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>They can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-and-decrease-white-blood-cells\/\">white blood cells<\/a> to produce cytokines <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/il2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/il4\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-4<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-6\/\">IL-6<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-alpha<\/a>, which leads to either increased or decreased function of the immune system (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2633477\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC98941\/\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11456355\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>can also avoid detection by the immune system by changing the composition of its cell membrane to imitate the host cell membrane (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0882401000903954\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The similarity between the <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>and human cell membranes may cause the body to make autoantibodies that attack the host and produce autoimmune disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26776112\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Diagnosis_of_Mycoplasma_Infections\"><a id=\"post-30458-_6o424ixrk6td\"><\/a><strong>Diagnosis of Mycoplasma Infections<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Patient symptoms, physical examination, radiology procedures and laboratory findings along with additional serologic and culture tests lead to an accurate diagnosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/3737868\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20094751\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Laboratory_Diagnosis_of_Mycoplasmas\"><a id=\"post-30458-_lrv2bjjqxfvf\"><\/a><strong>Laboratory Diagnosis of Mycoplasmas<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><a id=\"post-30458-_usbqb3bbcqk9\"><\/a><strong>Culture<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Culturing <strong><em>M. hominis<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>U. urealyticum<\/em> <\/strong>is relatively easy from urogenital specimens [<a href=\"http:\/\/jmd.amjpathol.org\/article\/S1525-1578(12)00143-2\/fulltext#sec2\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A culture of <strong><em>M. pneumoniae<\/em><\/strong> from clinical samples such as nose and throat swabs or sputum was considered standard for diagnosis several years ago (<a href=\"http:\/\/jcm.asm.org\/content\/37\/1\/14.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, the organism usually takes 2 to 3 weeks to grow, it requires specialized and expensive growth media, and the sensitivity of cultures may be as low as 60-70% (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1840889\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the culture method is rarely used for routine diagnosis of <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> infections in specialized laboratories and should be done for epidemiological reasons (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1840889\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Culture is rarely successful for <strong><em>M. genitalium <\/em><\/strong>[<a href=\"http:\/\/jmd.amjpathol.org\/article\/S1525-1578(12)00143-2\/fulltext#sec2\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-30458-_1mo0pz1ip3xe\"><\/a><strong>Serology<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Serologic tests are simple and very often used to diagnose <strong><em>M. pneumoniae<\/em><\/strong> respiratory infections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17040871\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Serologic tests measure<strong> antibodies<\/strong> specific for <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> to show the presence of infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17040871\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In all serologic tests, two blood specimens are collected 2 &#8211; 4 weeks apart, one taken in the acute and one in the convalescent stage of the illness. A fourfold rise in antibody level (titer) indicates recent infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12667235\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Serologic tests include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Complement fixation test<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Antibody levels do not peak until 4 &#8211; 6 weeks after infection. Since antibodies may persist for up to 1 year, a sustained high level of antibodies does not necessarily indicate a current infection (<a href=\"http:\/\/jcm.asm.org\/content\/37\/1\/14.full\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cold agglutinin test<\/strong> (frequently used to confirm the diagnosis)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Approximately 30% &#8211; 60% of patients with <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> infection develop cold agglutinins (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/immunoglobulin-m\/\">IgM<\/a> antibodies to the I antigen of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/increase-decrease-red-blood-cells\/\">red blood cells<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This test is not specific since positive results can be seen in infectious mononucleosis, influenza, cold agglutinin disease, and leukemia. However, if present in a patient with clinical signs of <em>M. pneumoniae<\/em> infection, a presumptive diagnosis can be made (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pneumonia\/atypical\/mycoplasma\/index.html\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ELISA <\/strong>(Enzyme-Linked Immuno Assay) and <strong>IFA <\/strong>(immunofluorescence assays)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ELISA is used for the detection of IgM (shows the presence of acute infection) and IgG (shows prior exposure, remains positive for years) antibodies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9286066\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Antibodies can be detected after about 1 week of illness, and peaks at 3 &#8211; 6 weeks and then declines gradually.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-30458-_s9zmoeyp0x88\"><\/a><strong>Molecular Methods<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Development of molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays improved diagnosis of <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection in pediatric and adult patients (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC104575\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC84154\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Many studies have described the use of different molecular methods among which real-time PCR has both high sensitivity (true positive rate) and high specificity (true negative rate) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20094751\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Real-time PCR may detect <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>in 60 &#8211; 100% of people with the infection, and report an absence of infection in 96.7 &#8211; 100% of healthy people. In practical terms, this means that the PCR technique is extremely unlikely to report an infection in someone who doesn\u2019t have one, but it has up to a 40% chance of reporting no infection in someone who is infected (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC193789\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The PCR technique is practically the only method for detection of<em> M. genitalium<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC269700\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis is made only through nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), but there are no commercially available diagnostic tests (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/treatment\/2010\/std-treatment-2010-rr5912.pdf\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Treatment\"><a id=\"post-30458-_99wzf74g8rlh\"><\/a><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection is treated with certain types of antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>All species of <em>Mycoplasma<\/em> lack a cell wall and, therefore, they are not susceptible to penicillins and other antibiotics that act on this structure (<a href=\"http:\/\/jac.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/40\/5\/622.full.pdf+html\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Most antibiotics used in the treatment decrease <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>growth but do not kill the bacteria (bacteriostatic). This is one of the reasons why eradicating <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>is often slow and depends on the efficacy of the host immune system.<\/p>\n<p>Macrolides, such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, and azithromycin are the treatment of choice for <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>infections in both adults and children (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11548186\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/jid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/183\/6\/907.full\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Resistance to macrolides has been emerging and increasing in <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>since 2000, especially in Asia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC529214\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2168523\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Several Japanese studies have reported that 20 &#8211; 40% of strains are resistant to macrolides (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20094751\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC529214\/\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones (levofloxacin) and ketolides have also been effective in treating <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC523564\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12047413\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/jid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/183\/6\/907.full\"> R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In the past, tetracyclines have been effective against both<em> M. hominis<\/em> and <em>U. urealyticum<\/em>, but resistance has developed. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/clindamycin\/\">Clindamycin<\/a> is an alternative to the tetracyclines (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/6665683\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Antibiotic therapy typically lasts 10-14 days. <strong>If your doctor prescribes a course of antibiotics, it is extremely important to finish the whole prescription, even if your symptoms disappear after the first few days. <\/strong>Failure to complete treatment may increase the risk of antibiotic resistance in the pathogen.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Prevention\"><a id=\"post-30458-_quwm83el2ydv\"><\/a><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Different types of vaccines against <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>have been tested but none are presently available (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2893430\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Like many respiratory diseases, <em>M. pneumoniae <\/em>infection may be prevented by taking simple precautions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pneumonia\/atypical\/mycoplasma\/about\/prevention.html\">R<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.<\/li>\n<li>Cough or sneeze into upper sleeve or elbow, instead of hands, if a tissue is not available.<\/li>\n<li>Wash hands often with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several measures that can be taken in order to prevent genital infections include (<a href=\"http:\/\/diseaseslab.com\/mycoplasma-genitalium-causes-symptoms-treatment-infection\/\">R<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practicing safe sex using condoms.<\/li>\n<li>Testing for genital <em>Mycoplasma<\/em> infections at your doctor\u2019s office or at a reproductive health center (e.g. Planned Parenthood).<\/li>\n<li>Not having sex until you and your partner have completed antibiotic treatment, if necessary.<\/li>\n<li>A follow-up test to confirm that treatment has cleared the infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As is the case with the discovery of any sexually transmissible disease, all past sexual partners need to be contacted, tested and, if needed, treated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sixteen <em>Mycoplasma <\/em>species are found in humans, but not all may cause human disease.
