Read on to learn what the latest studies found.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"CannabisTHC_and_Psychosis\"><strong>Cannabis\/THC and Psychosis<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"How_Much_Do_We_Know\">How Much Do We Know?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s get something straight right from the start: medical experts and scientists agree that we still don\u2019t have enough evidence that marijuana use can directly trigger psychosis. Recent studies point to strong associations in people at risk, but more data are needed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6546656\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/article\/S2215-0366(19)30086-0\/fulltext\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/marijuana\/there-link-between-marijuana-use-psychiatric-disorders\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Thus, people who have a family history of psychosis\/schizophrenia or other vulnerability are advised to avoid marijuana. Potent strains and smoking marijuana at a younger age are considered particularly risky [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6546656\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/article\/S2215-0366(19)30086-0\/fulltext\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/marijuana\/there-link-between-marijuana-use-psychiatric-disorders\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, the majority of studies dealt with associations only, which means that a cause-and-effect relationship hasn\u2019t been established.<\/p>\n<p>For example, just because psychosis has been linked with marijuana use doesn\u2019t mean that marijuana causes psychosis.<\/p>\n<p>Also, even if a study did find that marijuana use contributes to psychosis, it\u2019s highly unlikely to be the only cause. Complex disorders like schizophrenia always involve multiple possible factors &#8211; including genetics, brain chemistry, environment, health status &#8211; that may vary from one person to another.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"The_Bigger_Picture\">The Bigger Picture<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Studies suggest that many factors can modify the relationship between marijuana and psychosis, including [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6546656\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/article\/S2215-0366(19)30086-0\/fulltext\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Types of marijuana strains and their potency<\/li>\n<li>Patterns of use<\/li>\n<li>Age of use<\/li>\n<li>Genetics<\/li>\n<li>Childhood trauma<\/li>\n<li>Lifestyle<\/li>\n<li>Gender<\/li>\n<li>Race<\/li>\n<li>Social and cultural influences<\/li>\n<li>Other illnesses and\/or addictions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Adverse_Consequences_of_Cannabis\">Adverse Consequences of Cannabis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The most common adverse effects caused by smoking cannabis or using a mouth spray containing cannabis extract (Sativex) are [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayer.ca\/omr\/online\/sativex-pm-en.pdf\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Drowsiness<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Dry mouth<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li>Paranoid thinking and dissociation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A number of anecdotal reports suggest that cannabis can produce a range of acute psychotic symptoms that include <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/depersonalization-its-causes-and-potential-solutions\/\">depersonalization<\/a>, derealization, paranoia, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-anxiety\/\">anxiety<\/a>, a flight of ideas, disorganized thinking, persecutory delusions, grandiose delusions, auditory and visual hallucinations, and impairments in attention and memory [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2864503\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cannabis-Induced_Psychosis\">Cannabis-Induced Psychosis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Small studies in healthy volunteers suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tetrahydrocannabinol-thc\/\">THC (from cannabis)<\/a> may induce psychosis-like symptoms. However, some people seem to more vulnerable to these negative effects than others (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15173844\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>According to large recent studies in Europe and Brazil, smoking high-potency marijuana every day was linked with an increased risk of developing psychosis by nearly five times compared to people who have never used marijuana [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/article\/S2215-0366(19)30048-3\/fulltext\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/marijuana\/there-link-between-marijuana-use-psychiatric-disorders\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another study with 6,700 people concluded that people with marijuana-induced psychosis have a 47% chance of getting bipolar or schizophrenia within 3 years to 5 years. Substance-induced psychosis at a young age was associated with a higher risk of converting to schizophrenia. Self-harm after experiencing substance-induced psychosis was associated with a higher risk of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29179576\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, no one knows for sure if cannabis <em>causes<\/em> schizophrenia (or bipolar). Scientists say it\u2019s possible that people who are predisposed to schizophrenia may also be more likely to consume cannabis. They\u2019re also more likely to smoke cigarettes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6546656\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Yet a different theory states that some common factors may underlie both cannabis use and psychosis.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, a group of researchers holds that cannabis use in people with mental health issues is a way to \u201cself medicate\u201d and mitigate the early symptoms of schizophrenia [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6546656\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"When_to_Seek_Help\">When to Seek Help<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some research points to the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/tetrahydrocannabinol-thc\/\">medical potential of cannabis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, its use remains controversial because of the high risk of addiction, dependence, side effects, and withdrawal syndrome. This is particularly true for the non-medical use of cannabis and makes it difficult to stop using.<\/p>\n<p>Relapses in people attempting to quit are relatively common. Getting medical help early on can make a big difference in your mental health and general well-being [<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT03919760\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Legality\">Legality<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The use and possession of cannabis are illegal under federal law for any purpose in the US.<\/p>\n<p>THC in cannabis is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, defined as having a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medicinal use, and a lack of accepted safety data for use under medical supervision [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov\/21cfr\/21usc\/812.htm\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, cannabis laws across different US states vary and many states conflict with federal law. Researchers think that dopamine in the striatum may increase <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/21-drugs-increase-motivation\/\">motivation<\/a>. Excessively high levels of dopamine may contribute to working memory deficits associated with cannabis exposure, scientists say (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2864503\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Structural and functional imaging studies suggest that chronic cannabis causes similar negative changes in brain structure to schizophrenia, such as volume reduction in the hippocampus and the amygdala (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=19689331\">R<\/a>). According to one experimental hypothesis, this might be due to the neurotoxic effects of chronically elevated dopamine (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=10700592\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"GABA\"><strong>GABA<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Activation of the CB1 receptor reduces <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gaba\/\">GABA<\/a> release in hippocampal neurons in animals. Limited research suggests that people with schizophrenia may have lower brain GABA, but more large-scale studies are needed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2864503\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Glutamate\"><strong>Glutamate<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One theory says that so-called <em>cognitive gating functions<\/em> in the brain prevent illogical thoughts from entering consciousness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2864503\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Animal studies show that <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/49-ways-increase-natural-cannabinoids-without-smoking-pot-including-ways-decrease-cannabinoids\/\">cannabinoids<\/a> reduce glutamate (and NMDA activation) in several brain regions involved in the regulation of gating functions, such as the hippocampus, the prefrontal cortex, the nucleus accumbens, and the amygdala (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2864503\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ketamine\/\">Ketamine<\/a>, an NMDA blocker, may also cause psychosis, which stresses the potential role of lower glutamate in certain regions and psychosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8526975\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Genes_and_Cannabis-Induced_Psychosis\"><strong>Genes and Cannabis-Induced Psychosis<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Limitations\"><strong>Limitations<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The following SNPs have only been found to be associated with cannabis-induced psychosis. That does not mean having them will increase a person\u2019s risk of experiencing psychosis from cannabis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More work is needed before the impact of cannabis use on psychosis in people with different genetic variations is clarified.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"DRD2_Dopamine_Gene\"><strong>DRD2 (Dopamine Gene)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Limited experimental data indicate that dopamine D2 receptors and schizophrenia are tightly related. There is an association between psychosis and relatively greater D2 receptors in the striatum, a dopamine-rich area of the brain (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r2\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/drd2\">DRD2<\/a> receptors are blocked by antipsychotic drugs, which help control symptoms of psychosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r1\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Scientists say that relatively excessive dopamine D2 activation may lead to reduced \u201cgating\u201d functions. This means that people have reduced filtering of relevant information (reduced signal to noise ratio), as well as blocking out distractions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r10\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r12\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>These brain processes contribute to different higher-order cognitive functions and are strongly involved in the control of attention (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r13\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r14\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some studies suggest that patients with schizophrenia performing attentional tasks have less activity and lower grey matter in the cingulate, a brain region that heavily influences attentional processing and executive function (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r14\">R<\/a>). This region is influenced by D2 receptors (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r18\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r19\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>SNPs<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/snp\/rs1076560\/\">The &#8220;A&#8221; allele of rs1076560 in the Dopamine DRD2 gene<\/a> has been associated with cannabis-induced psychosis in one study (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/npjschz201525\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It was associated with a 10X higher risk of developing psychosis in daily cannabis users in another study (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/npjschz201525\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This SNP has also been associated with behavior and brain activity during cognitive and emotion processing in healthy humans and in patients with schizophrenia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r15\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r22\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r23\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/snp\/rs1076560\/\">rs1076560<\/a> is associated with neuronal connectivity in the amygdala, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and striatal regions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R4\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R24\">R<\/a>), and differences in EEG results (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R16\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Brain activity in the left <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/basal-ganglia-your-reptilian-brain\/\">basal ganglia<\/a> and thalamus was also found to be associated with rs1076560 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R5\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>These differences in brain function have been found to correlate with alterations in working memory, reaction time and impairments in negative decision making (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R2\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R3\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R7\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/#R8\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The A allele increased DRD2 function by making the DRD2 protein longer (decreases the ratio of D2S and D2L) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4013426\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The D2 long form (D2L) is mainly postsynaptic and is a target for antipsychotics (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r21\">R<\/a>). Mice without D2L receptors have reduced D2 activity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r28\">R<\/a>). Antipsychotics are hypothesized to help by increasing AKT1 and reducing GSK-3\u03b2, but this hasn\u2019t been proven (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3024671\/#r33\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3304298\/#B6\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3304298\/#B76\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3304298\/#B82\">R,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3304298\/#B65\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3304298\/#B46\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"COMT_Dopamine-Related_Gene\">COMT (Dopamine-Related Gene)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/comt\/\">COMT<\/a> gene plays an important role in the breakdown of dopamine in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;GG&#8221; variant of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/snp\/rs4680\/\">rs4680<\/a> has been associated with increased COMT activity, which results in a combination of reduced dopamine in the prefrontal cortex and increased levels of dopamine in mesolimbic areas.<\/p>\n<p>One study suggested that an association between the &#8220;GG&#8221; genotype and psychotic symptoms after the use of cannabis during adolescence (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=15866551\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Another study reported that COMT genotypes only influenced the development of psychotic disorders among individuals exposed to childhood abuse, indicating that environmental exposure and genetic factors may interact in a more complex way than expected [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23445265\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"CB1_Receptor_Cannabinoid_Gene\">CB1 Receptor (Cannabinoid Gene)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/cnr1\/\">Cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1)<\/a> is the most well-characterized cannabinoid receptor.
