Some nutrients can<strong> lower the levels of bacterial colonization and improve symptoms of stomach damage<\/strong>. While <strong>we strongly recommend against using any of the strategies below in place of what your doctor recommends<\/strong>, some of them may be helpful alongside prescribed medication. href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/probiotics-good-bacteria\/\"><strong> probiotics<\/strong><\/a><strong> to antibiotic therapy against <em>H. pylori<\/em> improved overall efficacy and reduced to indicate that they are beneficial against <em>H. pylori<\/em> colonization include: <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-acidophilus\/\"><em>L. acidophilus<\/em><\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3340303\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11121911\"> R<\/a>], <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-12-scientific-health-benefits-of-l-reuteri\/\"><em>L. reuteri<\/em><\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4714294\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wageningenacademic.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.3920\/BM2008.1005\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The specific mechanisms of action by which probiotics improve infection rates are currently unknown [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4958626\/\">R<\/a>]. Studies show that probiotics reduced the ability of <em>H. pylori <\/em>to effectively colonize the stomach, but it is not clear whether the effects are explained by competition for space and nutrients, changes in the stomach pH, chemicals produced by the other bacteria, or other changes caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/probiotics-good-bacteria\/\">probiotic<\/a> colonization [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4958626\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Probiotic supplements are generally recognized as safe, but they may rarely produce side effects in people with compromised immune systems. To avoid any adverse effects or unexpected interactions, talk to your doctor before starting a new probiotic.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_a7v3095f0cmv\"><\/a>2) Fermented Foods &amp; Beverages<\/h4>\n<p>Certain fermented beverages &#8211; especially wine, beer, and fermented milk &#8211; have produced promising clinical results in supporting <em>H. pylori<\/em> treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In a cross-sectional study of over 10,000 people in England, moderate consumption of wine and beer was found to be somewhat protective against <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection. The authors suggested that moderate wine and beer consumption could produce an environment in the stomach that is hostile to <em>H. pylori<\/em>, thereby making it easier to eradicate the bacteria [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12425543\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, another study found that alcohol consumption was positively associated with <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection, suggesting that a component of wine and beer other than alcohol could be responsible for their apparent benefit [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19808941\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Fermented dairy products such as yogurt and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/kefir\/\">kefir<\/a> were also found to be protective against <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection. Furthermore, the addition of yogurt to conventional therapy improved eradication rates in one trial of 347 patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4958626\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4714294\/\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18665934\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some authors have suggested that other fermented foods could protect against <em>H. pylori<\/em>, but that our poor understanding of specific ethnic fermented foods around the world is a major obstacle to using them in a clinical setting [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4958626\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_p4z6ajqmy4be\"><\/a>3) Broccoli Sprouts and Brassica Vegetables<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/panacea-benefits-broccoli-sprouts-sulforaphane\/\">Sulforaphane<\/a>, a compound found in broccoli and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/panacea-benefits-broccoli-sprouts-sulforaphane\/\"> broccoli sprouts<\/a>, may inhibit the growth of <em>H. pylori<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have suggested that sulforaphane may protect the mucosal membranes of the stomach, which may lead to reduced inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19349290\">R<\/a>]. Improved mucosal membrane health may also make it more difficult for <em>H. pylori<\/em> to colonize the stomach effectively, explaining the reduced rate of colonization found in some studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19349290\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In asymptomatic patients with confirmed <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection, eating 70 g\/day of broccoli sprouts resulted in a significant decrease of colonization intensity [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>]. Another study also reported a loss of <em>H. pylori<\/em> colonization following broccoli sprout treatment in four out of nine test subjects (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In type 2 diabetic patients infected with <em>H. pylori,<\/em> broccoli sprouts powder in addition to standard triple therapy showed a considerable improvement in <em>H. pylori<\/em> eradication, and also showed improved heart health in subjects (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4060758\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In mice, <em>H. pylori<\/em> infections were effectively eliminated by sulforaphane injections [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, a small study with <em>H. pylori<\/em>-colonized humans in Japan was unable to demonstrate an improvement when supplementing broccoli sprouts [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other brassica vegetables (cauliflower, swede, headed cabbage, turnip, radish) also contain compounds similar to sulforaphane, called isothiocyanates. Patients who consume high amounts of isothiocyanates had a lower risk of gastric cancer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_farb5rawmw2f\"><\/a>4) Bismuth<\/h4>\n<p>According to the American College of Gastroenterology, there is significant clinical evidence to support the use of bismuth as part of a \u201cquadruple therapy\u201d against <em>H. pylori<\/em>, along with tetracycline, a nitroimidazole, and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28071659\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Your doctor may or may not recommend bismuth as part of a treatment for <em>H. pylori<\/em>. Remember to talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement or making significant changes to your diet.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_85svjspw52r6\"><\/a>5) Cranberry<\/h4>\n<p>In a study sponsored by a cranberry juice company, regular consumption of cranberry juice was effective in reducing levels of <em>H. pylor<\/em>i colonization. However, the conflict of interest was clear here [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cranberry juice contains chemicals that reduce the bacteria&#8217;s ability to cling to cells, which lowers their ability to colonize those cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>]. This may explain why supplementation was able to improve treatment outcomes in <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection.<\/p>\n<p>When cranberry juice was fed to mice infected with <em>H. pylori<\/em>, 80% of the mice were cured following the treatment. The eradication rate was 20% four weeks after the treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cranberry juice administered for three weeks inhibited <em>H. pylori<\/em> colonization rates in about 15% of asymptomatic, colonized children. However, in most subjects who became negative for <em>H. pylori<\/em>, the clearing effect did not persist following cessation of consumption [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In combination with traditional anti-<em>H. pylori<\/em> antibiotics such as metronidazole and clarithromycin, cranberry consumption improved eradication rates and suppressed infections in populations at risk for <em>H. pylori <\/em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_zen2kprn3kfc\"><\/a>6) Other Berries<\/h4>\n<p>Blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, bilberry, and elderberry extracts enhanced the susceptibility of <em>H. pylori<\/em> to clarithromycin and demonstrate strong bacteriostatic activity against clarithromycin-resistant <em>H. pylori<\/em> strains [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>When adults with <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection were drinking blueberry juice during a 90-day period, 14% had a negative <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-of-high-or-low-blood-urea-nitrogen-bun\/\">urea<\/a> breath test on the 35<sup>th<\/sup> day. This effect was also maintained on the 90<sup>th<\/sup> day [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_5ys64jml8jge\"><\/a>7) Garlic<\/h4>\n<p>Consumption of garlic for long periods of time did not affect the occurrence of <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection, but patients who ingested garlic had significantly lower <em>H. pylori <\/em>colonization rates than the group who did not [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In western China, those who ate raw garlic had a significantly lower level of <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Several studies have proven that consuming vegetables in the garlic family is correlated with a reduced risk of gastric cancer, supporting the theory that compounds in garlic may have beneficial effects on stomach health or on <em>H. pylori<\/em> colonization [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Garlic contains chemicals called thiosulfinates, such as allicin, which has been shown to be toxic to bacteria, which may explain how supplementation was able to improve treatment [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>]. These chemicals also have strong antioxidant abilities [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>]. Downstream benefits from antioxidant intake could thus also explain the positive effects of garlic supplementation on infection and other immune processes.<\/p>\n<p>Other studies have shown that garlic inhibits bacterial <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-quorum-sensing-and-natural-quorum-sensing-inhibitors\/\">quorum sensing<\/a>, which could also explain the decreased rate of infection [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19878318\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22314537\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Extracts from raw garlic or garlic powder tablets kill <em>H. pylori<\/em> in the laboratory [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>]. Garlic extract also prevents <em>H. pylori<\/em>-induced gastritis in animal studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4481371\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>One study found no beneficial effects on the rate of colonization in people ingesting garlic oil [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_5icsih63mm6z\"><\/a>8) Polyunsaturated fatty acids<\/h4>\n<p>Polyunsaturated fatty acids, <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-22-science-based-health-benefits-of-fish-oil\/\">omega-3<\/a> and -6, inhibit the growth of <em>H. pylori<\/em> in the laboratory and decrease the prevalence of gastritis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>8-week supplementation with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) induced bacterial clearance in 53% of patients by the end of treatment and 20% of patients 6 months later [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4712431\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>PUFAs decreased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> and inflammation induced by <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection and attenuated gastric cancer formation in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4481371\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, a study showed that PUFAs added to a bismuth-based quadruple therapy had no effect on <em>H. pylori<\/em> eradication or inflammatory markers [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4712431\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A specific omega-3 compound called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) reduced the ability of <em>H. pylori<\/em> to colonize the gastric lining in 50% of mice. Combining DHA with a standard triple therapy decreased the recurrence of <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4712431\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/6-evening-primrose-oil-uses-benefits-side-effects-dosage\/\">Evening primrose oil<\/a> (rich in the omega-6 unsaturated linoleic acid) heals ulcers in rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-22-science-based-health-benefits-of-fish-oil\/\">Fish oil<\/a> exhibited a significantly inferior <em>H. pylori<\/em> eradication rate compared with a conventional eradication regimen, but it improved symptoms in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia regardless of <em>H. pylori<\/em> status [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4712431\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_rq2uykvhxcv8\"><\/a>9) Olive Oil<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/olive-oil\/\">Olive oil<\/a> led to a 10% successful eradication of <em>H. pylori<\/em> in two clinical trials. This may help explain the improvements seen in treatment.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_9u0r4x8sllye\"><\/a>11) Curcumin<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/curcumin-cures-top-15-scientifically-proven-health-benefits-with-references\/\">Curcumin<\/a> has been used to heal peptic ulcers as well as to prevent <em>H. pylori<\/em> growth [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>]. Treatment with turmeric healed peptic ulcers in 48% of patients after 4 weeks and 76% of patients after 12 weeks of treatment. Abdominal <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a> and discomfort significantly lessened during the first and second weeks [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Curcumin protects from ulcers and inhibits bacterial quorum sensing [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23354447\">R,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24262582\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18284200\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26139614\"> R<\/a>]. This may help explain the protective effects in <em>H. pylori <\/em>treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Curcumin is capable of eradicating <em>H. pylori<\/em> in mice but does not seem to completely eradicate the bacteria in people [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>]. Poor absorption of curcumin in people could contribute to this ineffectiveness [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4777996\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_k8d6vztqvd3u\"><\/a>12) Licorice<\/h4>\n<p>In patients with peptic ulcer disease or non-ulcer dyspepsia, clarithromycin treatment in combination with licorice helped reduce colonization levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27614124\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In patients with peptic ulcer disease, licorice was as effective as bismuth at reducing <em>H. pylori<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25276073\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some chemicals in licorice help reduce inflammation and improve immunity, which could help explain the benefits of supplementation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19455572\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Licorice ameliorated <em>H. pylori<\/em>-induced stomach lesions in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4481371\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_lyiox17xtcbg\"><\/a>13) Cinnamon<\/h4>\n<p>In a clinical trial in patients with high <em>H. pylori<\/em> colonization, there was a decline in <em>H. pylori<\/em> following<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-15-proven-scientific-reasons-spice-life-cinnamon-references\/\"> cinnamon<\/a> ingestion [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_cg2x3db3ifss\"><\/a>14) Mastic Gum<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/mastic-gum\/\">Mastic gum<\/a> is a resin produced by the <em>Pistacia<\/em> plant that is being investigated for the treatment of stomach ailments [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Clinical trials of mastic gum in <em>H. pylori<\/em> treatment showed both negative and positive outcomes, indicating that benefits may be limited or purely complementary [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In some studies, mastic gum was unable to eradicate <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection in mice or humans [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Other studies showed that mastic gum prevented <em>H. pylori<\/em>-related inflammation in patients [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>] and led to eradication in some cases [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19879118\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_49pou7zb9wpu\"><\/a>15) Lactoferrin<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lactoferrin\/\">Lactoferrin<\/a> binds to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/iron-balance-blood-test-iron-deficiency-anemia-overload\/\">iron<\/a> ions, and thus limits the availability of iron to bacteria [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>There have been both positive and negative results in clinical trials testing the effects of oral lactoferrin [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>]. Propolis also has anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulatory activity &#8211; both mechanisms clearly important in the pathophysiology of <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4112882\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Oaktree and manuka honey, exhibit strong anti-<em>H. pylori<\/em> activity. In patients with dyspepsia, honey intake at least once a week was associated with a significantly lower prevalence of <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5047973\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_dqfp1j6q8pcn\"><\/a>17) CoQ10<\/h4>\n<p>The combination of standard antibiotic triple therapy with<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/coenzyme-q10-ubiquinol\/\"> CoQ10<\/a> had a positive effect on the stomach lining inflammation and decreased<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative stress<\/a> in patients with chronic gastritis [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25854786\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_Research_Lacking_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-29295-_igk2ut8k8s3y\"><\/a>Animal Research (Lacking Evidence)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the approaches listed below to combat <em>H. pylori <\/em>infection. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed below should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_n82ql3ex9tmv\"><\/a>18) Ginger<\/h4>\n<p>Ginger root has traditionally been used for treating various gastrointestinal ailments including dyspepsia, peptic ulcer, motion sickness, and inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/scientifically-proven-health-benefits-of-ginger\/\">Ginger<\/a> extract can protect the stomach from stress-induced stomach lining lesions and inhibit gastric acid secretion, thus restricting <em>H. pylori<\/em> growth [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In animal studies, ginger extract prevents and treats <em>H. pylori<\/em>-induced infection and inflammation [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848239\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown that ginger inhibits bacterial quorum sensing, which could explain the decreased rate of infection [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/6332059_Dietary_phytochemicals_as_quorum_sensing_inhibitors\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_3ij7rios9ceu\"><\/a>19) Green Tea<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/green-tea\/\">Green tea<\/a> extract showed anti-<em>H. pylori<\/em> adhesion effects in a small trial of rhesus monkeys [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Green tea extract was also shown to partially inhibit enzymes used by the bacteria, which could limit their growth [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4465045\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In animal studies, green tea catechin administration resulted in a 36% <em>H. pylori<\/em> eradication [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC89367\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the administration of green tea polyphenol in drinking water dose-dependently suppressed <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection in animal studies [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14550260\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"post-29295-_ywtw7ysuyfxo\"><\/a>20) Others<\/h4>\n<p>More than 80 plant extracts exhibit anti-<em>H. pylori<\/em> activity. In most cases, however, studies in humans are lacking; this means that there is no clinical evidence to recommend using them against <em>H. pylori<\/em> infection.
