It has been used in herbal and folk medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Deglycyrrhizinated_Licorice_DGL_vs_Regular_Licorice\"><b>Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL) vs Regular Licorice<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Glycyrrhizin is an active compound in licorice with several health benefits, as well as significant side effects like hypertension [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3498851\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) has glycyrrhizin removed, thus preventing its side effects. It increased the eradication rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/h-pylori-part-1\/\"><i>H. pylori<\/i><\/a> by about 20% [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27614124\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In another trial on 50 people with dyspepsia, licorice helped symptoms of nausea, indigestion, and stomach pains [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3123991\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In rats with stomach ulcers caused by aspirin, licorice decreased the number and size of the ulcers [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26976086\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The evidence is limited but suggests that licorice may help with dyspepsia and ulcers.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Menopausal_Symptoms\"><b>3) Menopausal Symptoms<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a clinical trial on 60 menopausal women, licorice was <b>more effective than hormone replacement therapy (HRT) at reducing hot flash duration<\/b>, but had no effect on hot flash severity. In another trial on over 200 women, an herbal extract formula with liquiritigenin helped with menopausal hot flashes [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23663094\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19182698\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Glabridin, liquiritigenin, and glabrene <b>have estrogen-like activities<\/b>, which may help women who have low estrogen levels, such as in the case of menopause [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jsbmb.2004.04.003\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4896163\/\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Glabridin had a similar effect on human cell culture to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\">estradiol<\/a>-17beta (the most potent form of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/estradiol\/\">estrogen<\/a>). Two other licorice metabolites (glabridin and glabrene) have estrogen-like effects that may also help treat PCOS [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ejogrb.2006.10.013\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>These preliminary finding needs to be validated in larger, more robust clinical studies.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Fatigue\"><b>3) Fatigue<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Licorice increased cortisol levels and activity by inhibiting <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/hsd11b1\/\">11-beta-HSD<\/a> (the enzyme that converts cortisol to the less active cortisone) and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/Sult2a1\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">SULT2A1<\/a> (the enzyme that tags steroid hormones, including cortisol, for elimination) in 20 healthy volunteers. The increase in cortisol may help with energy levels. In addition, it also increases <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/dhea-dhea-s\/\">DHEA<\/a> and testosterone levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21184804\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Glabridin, a polyphenolic flavonoid from licorice extract, reduced exercise-induced<b> fatigue<\/b> in mice. Mice treated with glabridin swam for a longer period of time compared to control mice. The larger the dose of glabridin, the longer the mice could swim. Mice treated with glabridin also had lower markers of fatigue, such as blood <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/the-brains-secret-backup-generator\/\">lactic acid<\/a> levels and blood nitrogen <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-of-high-or-low-blood-urea-nitrogen-bun\/\">urea<\/a>, and higher glycogen levels [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3005384\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A single clinical trial and a study in mice cannot be considered sufficient evidence to claim that licorice reduces fatigue. Further clinical research is needed.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_and_Cell_Research_Lack_of_Evidence\"><b>Animal and Cell Research (Lack of Evidence)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of licorice for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Weight_Loss\"><b>Weight Loss<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In mice and rats, licorice flavonoid oil helps <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\"><b>weight loss<\/b><\/a><b> by enhancing fat oxidation<\/b> during light <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-14-proven-health-benefits-exercise-references-mechanisms\/\">exercise<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26639849\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Licorice root powder was also effective in reducing body weight gain and fat deposition in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26555669\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Brain_Protection\"><b>Brain Protection<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Glabridin, a major flavonoid of <i>Glycyrrhiza glabra<\/i> (licorice), may <b>help protect the brain from stroke-related injuries.<\/b> In stroke-induced rats, glabridin injection (at 25mg\/kg) significantly decreased brain damage, prevented nerve cell death, and lowered DNA damage. It also increased antioxidant levels in the brain [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.lfs.2007.10.019\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Licorice flavonoids may also <b>prevent oxidative damage in the brain<\/b>. Its antioxidant effects help decrease seizure-induced brain cell death in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3829649\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes can cause memory and learning problems. In diabetic mice, glabridin extract from licorice helped preserve cognitive function [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1556\/APhysiol.98.2011.2.14\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Oral glabridin administration at 25 and 50 mg\/kg <b>reversed learning and memory deficits in diabetic rats<\/b>. Additionally, it helped improve brain function in non-diabetic rats [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1556\/APhysiol.98.2011.2.14\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Inflammation in the brain can lead to many diseases like <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/alzheimer\/\">Alzheimer<\/a>\u2019s, dementia, and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/causes-symptoms-diagnosis-risk-factors-of-multiple-sclerosis\/\">multiple sclerosis<\/a>. This decreased the time required to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-23-methods-to-fall-asleep\/\">fall asleep<\/a> and increased the length of non-REM sleep without decreasing deep sleep [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.bmc.2012.04.011\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Male_Infertility\"><b>Male Infertility<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In mice, licorice extract increased sperm production, which may benefit male infertility [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26676954\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer\"><b>Cancer<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Components of licorice were effective against several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/abstract\/S0092-8674(11)00127-9\">hallmarks of cancer<\/a>, including cell proliferation, inflammation, cell death resistance, and making its own blood vessels in cell-based studies.<\/p>\n<p>However, many substances have anti-cancer effects in cells, including downright toxic chemicals like bleach. This doesn\u2019t mean that they have any medical value. On the contrary, most substances (natural or synthetic) that are researched in cancer cells fail to pass further animal studies or clinical trials due to a lack of safety or efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>In an oral cancer cell line, a polysaccharide from licorice promoted apoptosis and prevented cancer cells from growing. Licorice <b>was specifically toxic to human cancer cells, but not healthy cells<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25663459\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27815461\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26758798\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Licochalcone A and liquiritigenin block inflammatory and proliferative pathways in cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25710724\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22692244\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Licochalcone A also inhibited cancer cells from generating its own blood vessels (angiogenesis) by blocking the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-vegf-good-bad\/\">VEGF<\/a> receptor [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.bcp.2010.07.006\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><b>Licorice flavonoids prevented <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\"><b>colitis<\/b><\/a><b>-associated cancer<\/b> and reduced tumor formation in mice [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27563884\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad\u201d estrogens can cause cancer. Liquiritigenin may act as a \u201cgood\u201d estrogen and prevent cancer by binding to estrogen receptor beta [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4896163\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Infections\"><b>Infections<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Preliminary research suggests that licorice stimulates the immune system and has antioxidant properties. Its active compounds also had antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties in test tubes [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S030881461000244X\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4629407\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In a cell-based study, glycyrrhizic acid (from licorice extract) was <b>effective in controlling the growth of bacteria<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27162389\">R<\/a>]. Alcoholic licorice root extract inhibited two types of bacteria in cell culture (<i>S. mutans<\/i> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/l-acidophilus\/\"><i>L. acidophilus<\/i><\/a>). These two types of bacteria can damage teeth [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4148569\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Note, however, that these are very preliminary results that haven\u2019t been validated in humans or even in animals. Further research is needed to determine if licorice may help fight the infections caused by these microorganisms.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Side_Effects_Precautions\"><b>Side Effects &amp; Precautions<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Deglycyrrhizinated_Licorice_DGL\"><b>Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chronic or excessive consumption of regular licorice can cause unwanted complications and health problems. Since these side effects mostly come from glycyrrhizic acid, using DGL can help avoid these side effects, except when the desired benefit is directly associated with glycyrrhizic acid itself [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3498851\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Regular_Licorice\"><b>Regular Licorice<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><b>1) May Increase Cortisol<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>In large doses, licorice can increase cortisol levels.<\/p>\n<p>Cortisol is a steroid hormone and is also known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/63-factors-raising-stress-cortisol-level-backed-science\/\">stress<\/a> hormone.\u201d It can increase or decrease blood pressure, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/glucose\/\">glucose<\/a> levels, immune responses, etc. in response to stress [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4436856\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid, active metabolites (products of metabolism) of licorice extract, act like <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/need-know-aldosterone-health-effects\/\">aldosterone<\/a>. They inhibit the 11\u03b2-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11\u03b2-HSD2) enzyme and stop it from converting cortisol to cortisone. This causes <b>an increase in cortisol half-life and an increase in cortisol activity<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3498851\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8370136\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The hypothalamic\u2013pituitary\u2013adrenal (HPA) axis is an important response system to stress. Normal cortisol levels help maintain the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/reasons-cortisol-low-high\/\">HPA axis<\/a>. However, excess cortisol can cause HPA axis dysfunction and lead to chronic stress, <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/natural-treatments-depression\/\">depression<\/a>, alcoholism, and other disorders [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3860380\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>2) May Cause High Blood Pressure<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>A longer half-life of cortisol means that it takes longer for the concentration of cortisol in the blood to decrease. Excess cortisol can contribute to<b> high blood pressure.<\/b> A study found that these effects of glycyrrhizic acid were greater in women than in men [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1038\/sj.jhh.1001504\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The increase in cortisol locally in the adrenals can increase mineralocorticoids, which can increase blood pressure. Among non-hypertensive people, the increase in blood pressure (3.1 &#8211; 14.4 mgHg) is dependent on the amount of licorice consumed [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/8070427\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11494093\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The increase in cortisol<b> can also cause pseudo-hyperaldosteronism<\/b>. This condition is characterized by elevated blood pressure, decreased blood potassium concentration, and the retention of water and sodium [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3498851\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1038\/sj.jhh.1001504\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>3) May Slow Down Drug Metabolism<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Multiple components of licorice, including liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin, inhibit the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cyp3a4\/\">CYP3A4<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/cyp3a4\/\"> gene<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cyp-enzymes-interact-supplements-related-genes\/\">cytochrome P450<\/a> enzymes. Inactivation of P450 enzymes could also slow down drug metabolism, enhance their concentration in the blood, and <b>increase the risk of drug side effects<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3889530\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h4><b>4) May Lower Potassium Levels<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>When licorice metabolites inhibit the 11-\u03b2HSD2 enzyme, it also causes excess mineralocorticoid production and a decrease in potassium levels. In multiple case studies, excessive licorice consumption<b> caused <\/b>hypokalemia<b> (low potassium) and muscle weakness <\/b>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4089197\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Licorice-induced hypokalemia can lead to arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and <b>cause heart problems<\/b> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2831618\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Still, this effect seems to vary among patients. The glycyrrhizic acid from licorice increases cortisol levels, which may cause an increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/prostaglandins\/\">prostaglandin<\/a> levels in the uterus. However, these results are mixed between studies.
