Read below to learn more about these and other potential benefits of Chaga.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Is_Chaga_Mushroom\"><strong>What Is Chaga Mushroom?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chaga mushroom (<em>Inonotus obliquus<\/em>) is a fungus found primarily on birch trees that has been used in the folk medicine of Russia, Japan, and Europe [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25576897\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15630179\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Chaga mushroom can be eaten as a food and is also made into tea, syrup, bath agents, and extracts [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4388940\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Traditional uses for this mushroom include improving the immune response and treating stomach issues. However, none of them has been proven in clinical trials and only animal and cell-based research have been conducted [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25576897\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Health_Benefits_of_Chaga_Mushroom\"><a id=\"post-27756-_i68xru63b1c1\"><\/a><strong>Health Benefits of Chaga Mushroom<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Animal_and_Cell_Research_Lack_of_Evidence\"><a id=\"post-27756-_p1w9q6ocynk1\"><\/a><strong>Animal and Cell Research (Lack of Evidence)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No clinical evidence supports the use of chaga mushroom for any of the conditions listed in this section. However, the studies should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Antioxidant\"><a id=\"post-27756-_9hlo41m2lf92\"><\/a><strong>Antioxidant<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chaga has the strongest antioxidant activity when compared against three other common antioxidant mushrooms [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26955745\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In human<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/lymphocytes\/\"> lymphocytes<\/a>, chaga extract <strong>reduced DNA damage caused <\/strong>by hydrogen peroxide by over 40<strong>% <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15630179\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A compound isolated from chaga protected brain cells from Parkinson\u2019s disease by activating an antioxidant pathway [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23959789\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice, chaga extract\u2019s antioxidant activity protected against the effects of chronic inflammation of the pancreas [<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ijbiomac.2016.03.006\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In test tubes, several phenolic compounds found in chaga mushrooms scavenged free radicals [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21259372\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Cancer\"><a id=\"post-27756-_nh0eryhj6fnk\"><\/a><strong>Cancer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"634\" height=\"202\" class=\"wp-image-86110\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/11\/http-koreascience-or-kr-article-articlefullrecor.png\" alt=\"http:\/\/koreascience.or.kr\/article\/ArticleFullRecord.jsp?cn=POCPA9_2013_v14n3_1571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/11\/http-koreascience-or-kr-article-articlefullrecor.png 634w, https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/11\/http-koreascience-or-kr-article-articlefullrecor-480x153.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below, we will discuss some preliminary research on chaga\u2019s potential anticancer effects. It\u2019s still in the animal and cell stage and further clinical studies have yet to determine if this mushroom may be useful in cancer therapies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not under any circumstances attempt to replace conventional cancer therapies with chaga mushroom or any other supplements<\/strong>. If you want to use it as a supportive measure, talk to your doctor to avoid any unexpected interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Supplementing chaga extract<strong> reduced tumor size by 60% and prevented cancer from spreading <\/strong>in mice with lung cancer [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4946216\/\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In cell-based studies, chaga extract reduced the growth of several cancer cell types, including colon, liver, lung, leukemia, cervical, and brain cancer cells, but not of healthy cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4388940\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23679238\"> R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29800742\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5855615\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24815470\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24940902\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>However, sclerotium parts of chaga appeared to have stronger cytotoxic effects against normal cells than cancer cells [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19627197\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Compounds found in chaga may help the immune system to recognize cancer cells as harmful and mount an immune response against them [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4388940\/\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23679238\"> R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/thescipub.com\/html\/10.3844\/ajptsp.2007.10.17\"> R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\">Reactive oxygen species<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/oxidative-stress-101\/\"> oxidative damage<\/a> increase the risk of cancerous mutations by damaging cellular DNA. In <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-and-decrease-white-blood-cells\/\">white blood cells<\/a> (macrophages), it increased the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interleukin-1\/\">IL-1beta<\/a>, IL-6, and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-lifestyle-factors-influence-tnf-interleukin-6-il-6\/\">TNF-alpha<\/a>) and messengers (nitric oxide) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3774877\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.lfs.2005.02.023\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Compounds found in chaga helped the immune system of mice differentiate between the body&#8217;s cells and foreign cells, potentially increasing the accuracy of its response and reducing the risk of autoimmunity [<a href=\"http:\/\/thescipub.com\/html\/10.3844\/ajptsp.2007.10.17\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Chaga extract also reduced immune hypersensitivity in mice and reduced the risk of shock from severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23535020\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice, chaga ethanol extract reduced the levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/il4\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">IL-4<\/a> and increased <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/interferon-gamma-how-to-increase-decrease-high-low-levels\/\">IFN-y<\/a> levels by promoting the <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a> response while inhibiting the allergy-promoting <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\">Th2<\/a> response [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21820502\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Infections\"><a id=\"post-27756-_tdu2d0v8hey7\"><\/a><strong>Infections<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In animal and cell-based studies, it prevented the following viruses from infecting cells and replicating:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HIV [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26182655\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Herpes simplex [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23510282\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Epstein-Barr [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17049251\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis C [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22462058\">R<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both hot water and ethanol extracts of chaga are <strong>killed bacterial and fungal cells <\/strong>in cell culture. Chaga extract may also help fight infections by stopping <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/all-about-quorum-sensing-and-natural-quorum-sensing-inhibitors\/\">quorum sensing<\/a>, which is a method that bacterial cells use to activate gene expression [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25576897\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Note, however, that these are very preliminary results that haven\u2019t been replicated in clinical trials and, often, even in animals. Further research is needed to verify if chaga mushroom improves or prevents infections caused by these microorganisms.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Inflammation\"><a id=\"post-27756-_ktxcqc1umtis\"><\/a><strong>Inflammation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Chaga may reduce inflammation by blocking an over-activated immune response [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23535020\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Its extract reduced pro-inflammatory pathways (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-b\/\">NF-kB<\/a>) and messengers (nitric oxide and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/ptges2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">PGE2<\/a>) in rats and decreased the response to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15905055\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Chaga also reduced inflammation in mice with <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/ibd-ulcerative-colitis-crohn-genetics-lifestyle-stress-infections\/\">IBD<\/a> by suppressing cytokines (TNF-alpha and IL-1beta) and messengers (nitric oxide) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22819687\">R<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In mice and cells, chaga extract lowered <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-b\/\">NF-kappaB<\/a> binding activity. This may reduce inflammatory pain by blocking the effects of enzymes such as nitric oxide synthase (<a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/nos2\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">iNOS<\/a>) and cyclooxygenase-2 (<a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/cox2-natural-cox2-inhibitors\/\">COX-2<\/a>).
