Read this post to learn more about genetics, lifestyle factors, immune system activation, and infections that contribute to IBD.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_IBD_Ulcerative_Colitis_and_Crohns\"><a id=\"post-27521-_g30y6e76pyv1\"><\/a><strong>What is IBD (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn&#8217;s)?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Crohn&#8217;s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC) are two of the most frequently diagnosed subtypes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).<\/p>\n<p>IBD is a group of chronic inflammatory diseases characterized by inflammation and sores in the gut lining, which can result in diarrhea, abdominal <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/23-ways-to-combat-pain-naturally-by-increasing-your-opioids\/\">pain<\/a>, fatigue, fever, rectal bleeding, nutritional deficiencies, and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/a-comprehensive-list-of-effective-ways-to-lose-weight\/\">weight loss<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3980998\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Characteristics_of_Crohns_Disease\"><a id=\"post-27521-_7i2mlltpzu15\"><\/a><strong>Characteristics of Crohn&#8217;s Disease<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Crohn&#8217;s may affect any portion of the gastrointestinal tract, but mostly in the ileum (lower portion of the small intestine). It involves ulcerations of all cell layers of the gut lining (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3980998\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Crohn&#8217;s disease mainly involves <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th1-dominant\/\">Th1<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/th17\/\">Th17<\/a> overactivation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nrgastro\/journal\/v3\/n7\/full\/ncpgasthep0528.html\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Characteristics_of_Ulcerative_Colitis\"><a id=\"post-27521-_wz6jyqw2usw7\"><\/a><strong>Characteristics of Ulcerative Colitis<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ulcerative colitis typically affects the colon and rectum. It involves the inflammation of the mucosal layer (innermost cell layer) of the gut (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3980998\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It is mainly a <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/supplements-people-th2-dominant\/\">Th2<\/a> dominant condition, although in some cases it is not clear (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nrgastro\/journal\/v3\/n7\/full\/ncpgasthep0528.html\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Potential_IBD_Contributing_Factors\"><a id=\"post-27521-_31cb9ypi3np\"><\/a><strong>Potential IBD Contributing Factors<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>None of the below factors are established causes of IBD. According to preliminary research, they may play a role in this complex disease, but the evidence is inconclusive. If you recognize one or more of these factors in your case, it doesn\u2019t mean you have IBD. If you\u2019re experiencing digestive issues, work with your doctor to get adequate diagnosis and treatment.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Genetics\"><a id=\"post-27521-_uxuriru6er86\"><\/a><strong>Genetics<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>It\u2019s important to note that just because certain genotypes are associated with a condition or irregular lab marker, it doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that everyone with that genotype will actually develop the condition. Many different factors, including other genetic and environmental factors, can influence the risk of IBD.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If someone has Crohn&#8217;s (CD), their identical twin with the exact same genetics has a 50% chance of developing Crohn&#8217;s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12806610\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>If someone has ulcerative colitis (UC), their identical twin has a 10% chance of developing colitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12806610\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Genetics, therefore, contributes to the development of IBD but is not the sole cause. Genes that have been associated with Crohn&#8217;s and colitis include:<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"1_CARD15_CD\"><a id=\"post-27521-_l3z7eel8wqku\"><\/a><strong>1) CARD15 (CD)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>CARD15 binds to the bacterial cell wall and activates <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/nuclear-factor-kappa-b\/\">NF-kB<\/a>, which then stimulates the production of proinflammatory signals (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15840688\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>CARD15 mutation results in a defective innate immune response to <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/gut-bacteria-microbiome\/\">gut bacteria<\/a>, which can cause dysbiosis in IBD (<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1053\/gast.2002.30294\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_OCTN1_and_OCTN2_CD\"><a id=\"post-27521-_xpt2stpxcm2w\"><\/a><strong>2) OCTN1 and OCTN2 (CD)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Two genetic mutations that in OCTN1 and OCTN2, SLC22A4 and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfdecode.com\/gene\/slc22a5\/?utm_source=seo&amp;#38;utm_medium=selfhacked&amp;#38;utm_campaign=id00002\">SLC22A5<\/a>, respectively, have been associated with Crohn&#8217;s disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15107849\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>These mutated genes are mostly expressed in the gut lining, macrophages, and T cells, and cause decreased <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/top-18-science-based-health-effects-carnitine\/\">carnitine<\/a> transport (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15107849\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, there is still no direct evidence other than genetic data that demonstrate that these two genes are directly involved in the development of IBD.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"sh-partner shp-form sponsored sh-et-7388fa\">\n  <div>\n          <div class=\"partner-heading\">8 Ways To Use Your DNA &amp; Optimize Your Health<\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"partner-content\">\n      <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What kinds of secrets could your genes hold? In addition, quitting smoking is associated with a worsened outcome for ulcerative colitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19170191\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"7_NSAIDs\"><a id=\"post-27521-_3k9oqlj2dv7f\"><\/a><strong>7) NSAIDs<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>NSAID painkillers can temporarily create inflammation and leaky gut, leading to activation of the gut immune system by components of normal gut bacteria (that wouldn&#8217;t otherwise cause a problem). Leaky gut caused by NSAIDs can stimulate T-cell-mediated intestinal inflammation and cause IBD in genetically susceptible humans (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/entrez\/query.fcgi?holding=npg&amp;cmd=Retrieve&amp;db=PubMed&amp;list_uids=15168363&amp;dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Mice lacking <a href=\"http:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/il-10\/\">IL-10<\/a> and taking an NSAID developed colitis within 2 weeks (<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1053\/gast.2002.1231527\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"8_Diet\"><a id=\"post-27521-_36ji2vl4yahi\"><\/a><strong>8) Diet<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to preliminary research, lectins and gluten may contribute to gut inflammation in sensitive individuals (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22109896\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4009516\/\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1115436\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Food additives and contaminants that can stimulate the immune system and bacterial virulence, such as aluminum and iron, may also contribute to the development of IBD (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/entrez\/query.fcgi?holding=npg&amp;cmd=Retrieve&amp;db=PubMed&amp;list_uids=15626906&amp;dopt=Abstract\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Avoiding common inflammatory food substances such as lectins, gluten, and food additives may help prevent gut inflammation. Elimination diets such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhacked.com\/blog\/store\/\">Lectin Avoidance Diet<\/a> can help identify and remove such food irritants.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Bacterial_Infections\"><a id=\"post-27521-_zbo2rbptuvx\"><\/a><strong>Bacterial Infections<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"9_Mycobacterium_avium_paratuberculosis_MAP\"><a id=\"post-27521-_s8kyb3rp6b64\"><\/a><strong>9)<em> Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (<\/em>MAP)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of the most studied infections associated with both Crohn\u2019s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC) is called <em>Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (<\/em>MAP) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3031217\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Besides genetic predisposition, other factors that determine whether MAP manifests as CD or UC include the sex of the individual, age, the route of infection, and the dose. Higher exposure to MAP is associated with Crohn\u2019s while a lower exposure is associated with UC (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3031217\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This infection is passed from ruminant animals (those that chew their cud) to humans via consumption of MAP-contaminated meat or secretions (milk). Ruminant animals include cattle, bison, sheep, goats, deer, elk, and the like (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21375889\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It may also be passed to humans (or between animals) through <strong>MAP-contaminated water<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3031217\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One of the arguments for the MAP \u2013 IBD connection is a number of instances where family members, couples, and groups of friends living together had co-diagnosed IBD, indicating an environmental factor in addition to genetic predisposition (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3031217\/\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"10_Salmonella_or_Campylobacter_Infections\"><a id=\"post-27521-_hfn2su2rmb85\"><\/a><strong>10)<em> Salmonella<\/em> or <em>Campylobacter<\/em> Infections<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In one trial, <em>Salmonella <\/em>or <em>Campylobacter<\/em> infection resulted in 8 to 10 times increased risk of UC within 1 year following the infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21193449\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>While the risk for developing UC decreased over time, there was still a heightened risk 10 years post infection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21193449\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One surprisingly high-risk food for both <em>Salmonella<\/em> and <em>Campylobacter<\/em> infections is poultry.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, tests conducted by the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) found <em>Campylobacter<\/em> in nearly half (47%) of the raw chicken samples they tested at grocery stores (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/diseases\/campylobacter\/index.html\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Salmonella<\/em> infection may also be derived from raw poultry during food preparation. The risk of <em>Salmonella<\/em> infection is also increased by the presence of live chickens (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17388045\">R<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salmonella\/live-poultry-05-14\/index.html\">R<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salmonella\/live-poultry-05-16\/index.html\"> R2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"11_Other\"><a id=\"post-27521-_9xo4q89w0pd2\"><\/a><strong>11) Other<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Bacteria that infect the gut, including <em>Serpulina, Fusobacterium, and Enterobacteriaceae<\/em> can create <strong>biofilms<\/strong> on the surface of the gut wall, making it easier for normal gut bacteria to get into the mucosa, where they don\u2019t belong (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wjgnet.com\/1007-9327\/full\/v20\/i28\/9468.htm\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Fusobacterium varium<\/em> is significantly higher in the mucosa of patients with ulcerative colitis (84%) than in those with Crohn\u2019s Disease (16%) or other controls (3-13%) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wjgnet.com\/1007-9327\/full\/v20\/i28\/9468.htm\">R<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Aggressive\/detrimental strains include [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gastrojournal.org\/article\/S0016-5085(04)00456-1\/pdf\">R<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Enterococcus faecalis<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>C.
